7 on 7 vs. Youngstown State

omg, what a fugging joke!!

Anyone who has ever been a college athlete knows that 7 on 7 scrimmages between players in the summer mean absolutely nothing! Nobody even keeps the score, and there's no refs, so it's impossible to declare when someone is really down, scored, whatever. If some poser from YSU actually attempted to post a score, it shows his inferiority complex. Why you would even post something like this is beyond me, it shows nothing, and just makes you look stupid for acting like it tells us something.

I posted back last year that CSU beat Akron in a basketball scrimmage and I got the same response. Although it does not mean much, it is a good idea how each team's offense's and defense's look against the back's, tight end's, and wide receivers and vice versa.

I guess the proper perspective is that someone reported an unofficial score for a scrimmage where there's no intent to keep score, but for the coaches to measure the performance of their players. So we'd really need to know how the coaches evaluated the performance of their players to understand how each team actually did. Maybe it really was a tie if both teams' coaches were equally satisfied with their players' performances. On the other hand, if the main purpose of the scrimmage had been to run up points, the results might have been different.

Dude, I don't think eguins posted this to brag about his team or anything. It's just interesting information.

I did not post this to brag about the team, I posted this to inform you guys of something I had read. Did want to point out that with various coaching contact rules during the summer, that coaches were most likely not involved in this whatsoever.

Ever hear "Games are won/lost in the trenches.?" Neither line participates in 7-on-7. If it makes you feel good, go withit.

Thanks for the accurate description. There's a reason they call these "drills". Essentially, it's a practice session without much of anything similar to a game expect that someone is throwing the ball, and receivers are running routes....without a bunch of 300 lb. guys running at you. It's closest resemblance might be football at a picnic where one guy has the football and tells everyone else to go out for a pass.

I don't think equins was rubbing anything in our faces. But, if anyone thinks this tells us anything about how YSU stacks up against us, I think that's a REAL stretch.

This is a good practice for PN7 and his new receivers to get on the same page. GP1 posed the question back in January; who is going to catch the ball? This was before Carter was moved to WR, but I bet PN7 is building some confidence in his receivers with these 7-7 drills. That's what it's good for.

This is especially true in baseball and tennis where 7 on 7 drills result in the field seeming fairly empty or the court quite full, respectively.

Found out that Youngstown State was never stopped on offense, but considering Nicely threw 6 touchdown's I find it hard to believe Akron was ever stopped on offense either. Sounds like each team's defense was pretty ugly.

You just described every 7 on 7 practice that took place in college football for the last ten years. That's why you won't find much posted about it here. It is pretty meaningless from a fan's perspective.

these ysu fans must have been pretty pumped up about there passing scrimage experience because there on jjhuddle now talking about how they tied us today. To be honest most of my time at akron the players took the 7 on 7 like a teaching tool for the younger guys the older guys would take a few reps here and there but for the most part the youngs guys did most of the work. The other teams usually matched up their best competition against our young guys so it really never said much about where our program stood preseason.

Gives new meaning to the old saying about football games being won and lost in the trenches (offensive line against defensive line). Take away the soldiers in the trenches (linemen), and no one wins the war (tie).

very informative. :thumb:

I agree 100% with Dave... Games, especially for a running program like YSU, are won in the trenches. Our weak spot coming into this year is our OL....

I wasn't disagreeing with Dave. I was applauding him for command of sports slang and his willingness to explain something as vague as "in the trenches."
