8/28 Soccer: Akron @ USF (exhibition)

Recommended Posts

The Akron Men's Soccer team is taking its talents to South Beach to take on the USF Bulls on Saturday, August 28th.

Live stats should show up on the USF athletic website near game time.

Hey Zach, not sure if you've taken any geography courses at the U., but you might want to check your map of the Sunshine State. USF is in Tampa-St. Pete. But good luck to the gents. The heat and humidity should get them ready for nex' weekend in Noth Ca'lina.

How can they call themselves "South Florida" if they're in Tampa? That's like Columbus trying to claim that they're in "southern" Ohio.

Tomorrow's forcast there is 91 and humid with storms. I hope they can get the game in. A good way to prepare for the ehat down there is to play in the field house with the heat turned up. It gets pretty stuffy in there.

As far as im concerned the Suckeyes are in southern ohio. Some place far away and south of here at least.

 I was going to say the same thing.

Seriously though, if you've spent a lot of time in different parts of Ohio, you start to get the impression that many people in the Cowlumbus area remind you a lot more of southerners than midwesterners. If any of you spent any time down there when we played them a couple of years ago, you certainly had the opportunitiy to see some of this for yourself.

I don't want to get into the soccer fan/non-soccer fan discussions again, but looking at the blog post and comments how can you not get excited about other schools talking about US this way? Also interesting that they have the same issue with getting soccer jerseys.

Toro already explained all the things that make the men's soccer team great, including the sweet, sweet kits that we are all patiently waiting to buy. (Note to the athletic department: Please make this happen.) But you really need to go to the game on Saturday. Akron is the #1 men's team in the country in the preseason polls. Do you realize how rare it is that the #1 team in the country comes to play USF in any sport? Except for UConn women's basketball, it pretty much never happens. This is a chance to see your Bulls play, and possibly beat, the best of the best.

Technically it's preseason and this game doesn't count, but it kind of does count. Even in preseason, knocking off the #1 team looks really, really good to the people who vote in these polls. So USF fans, you need to be there on Saturday night at 7:30 in the USF Soccer Stadium. Bring some friends. Be loud. (This is a great opportunity to warm up your lungs and vocal cords for all that football screaming.) Make a difference. We're not asking you to be there, we're telling you.

.Akron pre-season fan support FYI – Akron drew almost 2900 fans to their home exhibition match against VCU last week – 1000 of those where AK-Rowdies (student fan group). A newly renovated soccer facility, coming up JUST short in the College Cup last year, and a #1 ranking in 3 of the 4 major polls SHOULD certainly generate some interest.

Akron gave up an own-goal (goalie slipped going for the ball dropped back to him by his own defender) to start the match but took control the rest of the way in the 3-1 decision.

Enjoy the match USF fans!

This is all cool. As an Akron grad, I enjoy seeing it. I only wish that more than 1/1.000th of the country gave a darn about soccer. It would be HUGE for our University.

I live in an Akron suburban neighborhood full of sports fans. These folks have their Browns and OSWho and Cavs and Indians flags waving everywhere. All they talk about is sports. And none of them had any clue that Akron was the #1 soccer team in the country last year. They looked at me like was from another planet. Heck...I even had to inform most of them that Akron even has a soccer team !!

I know what you're talking about. I knew a couple junior high students that knew about Akron's soccer team, but that was only because they play soccer themselves.

Youth league soccer has been HUGE in this country for years now, but it still hasn't taken off on a general, pop-level yet. But considering how huge youth league soccer is in this country I can't help but believe (hope?) that it is still only a matter of time.

I have no delusions of college futbol ever being another college basketball, let alone college football, but I do honestly feel it could one day easily rival college baseball as the #3 college sport. I suppose It would either be futbol or hockey.

The game is streaming for free on USF's site.

Are you sure? USF seems to be playing the Akron Spartans, according to their announcer.

I thought I was hearing things....Spartans, really?

This feed is pretty crappy, but it's free and I can watch some Zips soccer. Can't complain too much!
