tbozeglav
I haven't been around Akron for very long, but some of you I know have. I heard something the other day from a guy who grew up here that I had never heard before. There was something called the ACME game every year that literally packed the Rubber Bowl to more than capacity and brought hundreds of families, kids, fans, etc. Sometimes ending a marathon in the Bowl, having all the fun kid attractions, fireworks shows, a decent halftime show (That doesn't involve that guy in the white hat trying to bounce his baton back to himself 15 times), and just a fun time. Plus, tickets were like 2 bucks, sponsored by ACME. Why can't the Zips use the new stadium to create an amazing atmosphere, and watch some football at least once a year? I say, it's better to sell 30,000 2 dollar tickets that 5,000 20 dollar tickets. Maybe that doesn't make sense to everyone, but sometimes you need to take the cut, and pack the place. If you get sponsors, than maybe you can do it without even taking a cut. But that's not the point. We need people in this place, it is completely embarrassing to see three full sections completely empty in one of the nicest stadiums I have ever been in. Shouldn't have skipped math class. You lose out on about $40,000 first off. Second, the reason the ACME-Zip game (please search it on here) went away is that the school was losing money and not sustaining a fan base after the game. Therefore it was pointless to do. Unless, of course, you factor in an average of $20 per person spent in food and/or parking at the stadium: $5 Tickets: $5 x 30,000 = $150,000 $20 x 30,000 = $600,000 Total = $750,000 $20 Tickets: $20 x 5,000 = $100,000 $20 x 5,000 = $100,000 Total = $200,000 $2 Tickets: $2 x 30,000 = $60,000 $20 x 30,000 = $600,000 Total = $660,000 And before you argue that not everyone will spend $20, remember that some people will spend much more, making an average of $20 per person pretty fair. Youre numbers assume that 30k people would actually show up for said $2/$5 ticket games. I would be hard pressed to believe that. 20-25k is about the max considering the sorry state of affairs. Zipmeister
Shame on all of you for continuing the myth of the ACME-Zip game. Justin is really going to believe that old urban legend now because of you guys pulling his leg.

Yea, it would be great to get fans into the seats by winning, but maybe we need that energy in the stands that we had against Morgan State to even win? Why can't we create that great atmosphere and still charge $20? Who cares if 18-20k shows up. That's 20k having a great time at Akron and paying $
GoZips88
People have better things to do with their time than watch bad football. Make the football more valuable than what they would do with their time otherwise. I work the first half of all home games and usually can't wait to enjoy the 2nd half from one of four season ticket seats. I sat down Saturday, saw a 50-yard gain by Gardner and headed home. As stated above, I had better things to do with my time than watch bad football. My son chose to play tennis instead of tail-gate and didn't even attend the game. Very sad state of affairs right now regarding UA football. Looking forward to the soccer match Friday night. Also looking forward to pre-game on the radio Saturday night and as much of the first quarter as I can stomach. Totally agree that past success is the best predictor for future success. Have no idea why we didn't hire someone who has a proven track record at a lower level (Jim Tressel, Brian Kelly, etc.). 3K-6K actual the rest of the way unless we start winning. Big Zip
I actually had this discussion with a good friend of mine who went to Akron with me and will never attend a game. He called me Saturday night to say I told you to not buy those season tickets you idiot this team lost to a lousy Div. 1 AA team. He then proceeded to tell me he goes to High School games on Friday night and Saturday is to watch real college football on TV. I simply told him he may be right but I still enjoy myself at the games for the most part because we make it a family thing. I also pointed out it is harder and harder every year to write the check for the tickets and that goes for even if they charge me less. People don't even think we play Div. 1 football. They have no interest in attending an Akron game. I got him to attend the Motor City Bowl a few years ago and he had a lot of fun, but couldn't get him to go the next year. The funny thing is now when people tell me Mount Union could beat Akron...I'm not so sure they aren't right. That is how pathetic our football program has got. Finally, I was listening to the guys on 1350 on the way home from work yesterday and they were actually calling us on here with high expectations of the coach the team and the program part of the problem WTF? Because people on here have mentioned these guys are idiots and can't coach there way out of a paper bag we are part of the problem. Because we don't put a plan together for them to criticize we are part of the problem. I can't be the only one who heard these guys talking. The proceeded to talk about how this isn't a football school and how it never would be. How ICoach and YouTube Tom were great guys and were better than we'll ever know and they know because they've been around these types of guys before. Absolutely amazing. Funny thing is I listen to them and like them because they are talking Akron sports and even if they are talking about us on here being part of the problem they are talking about Akron sports and i'm okay with that. I would suggest they need to read more closely here because people have put forth many ideas to fixt the problems here...other suggestiong for AD and Coach when those searches were in place. People I'm stilll convinced would have been much better for the job. I would also point out we have also pointed out many things we can back up with regard to why we feel these guys are incompetent. The only real fact you needs is kicking off in the beginning of the game and after the half....c'mon really. Finally, Notre Dame they claim is a top tier program and that simply isn't true and hasn't been true for 15 years. Holtz left in '96 since then Bob Davie has been .583, Georg O'Leary fired before coaching a game, Ty Willingham .583 and Charlier Weiss .564....91-68 since Holtz left....not very good all things considerd and definitley not elite. I don't listen to the 1350 show. They can call it what they like, but it's not an Akron sports show. It's the same-old-same-old Cleveland and Columbus routine. If they were bashing ZipsNation, like you said BZ, at least they were talking Zips. But, sadly, I don't find it difficult to believe they were chiding us for wanting to win and reminding everyone that UA is not a football school and, once again, reinforcing the negativity by stating that they never will be. Anyway... back to Columbus State & the Browns...
Blue & Gold
I see that iCoach is the first coach lined up for the "Lunch With Coach" series. It's scheduled for this Thursday @ The Barley House. I'm going to assume they were thinking that by scheduling Ianello for this week the football team would have a good showing against 'Cuse plus a beat-down of a D-1AA under our belts, but would get the lunch w/ iCoach out of the way before we get our @sses handed to us @ UK & IU. Did anyone think we'd get thrashed by 'Cuse & beaten by a 1AA? Honestly, I still can't believe it. How low can you go? That's going to be one depressing lunch w/ the coach. I certainly didn't. It doesn't make me upset, I'm downright pissed off at what is going on. I haven't been this mad at a Zips team since couldn't even get a first down against Can't State in the last seven minutes of the game 2003. We were up by 14 and lost by three. A first down would have won the game.....ten steps is a first down. Lee Owens should have been fired walking off of the field. We are in the MAC. We have enough talent to win in the MAC. We need to start to win. I blame the players most of all.....They ALL need to get going and fast. How low can we go? Ask me after the season. Everything is still a mystery.
