Football is so pathetic

This is just about the worst case scenario for our new stadium. I'm not really the type to give up easily so what's a fan to do? I guess I'll just hunker down for the next few years and hope somehow we can raise the Titanic.

Amen. I was hoping for the perfect storm that the Cleveland Indians experienced when they opened Jacob's Field. Brand new, downtown stadium perfectly coinciding with the team becoming competitive for the first time in my lifetime.

We get the brand new, gorgeous, on-campus stadium perfectly coinciding with the team :puke:

All of this has been hashed and rehashed. Of course the AD had a very short list. The hire was made fairly quickly after the firing. The new guy isn't going anywhere for a while. Whether thats good or bad, lets move on. As far as Winters, there were as good or better candidates than him out there. Did The AD talk to them? Will we ever know? Ianello will get at least 2 more years after this year. But,since he has not benn able to 'coach up' this group to any degree,we will find out next year if the guy can actually coach...or not.

Anyone else struggling to figure out why this thread is in the basketball forum???

Seriously, we all know football sucks right now. Coach Ianello's first season can be characterized as nothing more than an absolute, dismal failure. We are the laughing stock of the MAC, a conference which is the laughing stock of D-I or FBS or whatever the heck they call it now. I for one was never very enthused about football season this year to begin with and I've been ready to move on to basketball since about week 2. If y'all want to keep beating up on Ianello and his band of not-so-merry men that is fine by me, but can we at least do it on the football board?

Anyone else struggling to figure out why Quick thinks this is the basketball forum???

Belichick actually played the game of football, unlike Ianello who never took a snap in his life.

So how does Bill Belichick rate on the kumquat scale? Would anyone care about the public personality of the Zips coach if he stacked up wins like Belichick?

Sorry, but it's just plain silly to me to criticize a coach for being too reserved, wearing the wrong clothing, having hair that's too straight, etc., etc. The only thing Zips fans are really concerned about is having a coach who wins more games than he loses. I'll take a nice, ripe kumquat of a coach who wins, as long as he's not a lying, cheating crook. Public personality is irrelevant.

It's also irrelevant to me whether or not a head coach played football. Mike Leach put together a great winning record at Texas Tech.

If Ianello continues to lose more games than he wins, disgruntled fans will continue to cite all the stereotypes why he shouldn't have been hired as head coach: He never played football, he had no head coaching experience, he's not a dynamic public personality, etc., etc., etc.

If Ianello becomes a winning head coach, fans will become undisgruntled and forget all the stereotypes.

Simple question for everyone pondering the possibility of someone else being hired instead of Coach I.

Question: Name me any other D-1A program that is seeking the services of a D-II coach with a losing record?

You're not much for trends I assume. It's true, Winter's career record at Wayne State currently stands at 32-38. But in the last 2 1/2 years, the record is 19-10. This is at a school that has an all-time winning percentage of 42.1%. Several have mentioned that they'd like to see him win something at the D-2 level before he would get serious consideration here. If he does manage to ever win a GLIAC title, it would be quite a feat. In that scenario, I believe we would have competition in hiring him.

BTW, I found this to be surprising. Did anyone realize these two facts about Wayne State?

1) It's the 3rd largest university in Michigan.

2) Its endowment is $204 million!!! (UA's is only $133.3 million)

Interesting data on Wayne State. I never would have guessed it.

Understanding "trends" is exactly the reason why I posed the question. Has there ever been any coach with a losing record at D-II that has ever been promoted all the way to DI-A head coach?

By comparison, there's a D-II coach with something like a 70-5 record, and he hasn't gotten that kind of promotion (gosh, I wish we had seriously considered him). And heck, Owens has been somewhat successful at Ashland, and I haven't heard anything about him possibly moving up to even the I-AA level.

If most of the people on this board want him to win something before he gets any kind of consideration here, I'd say that's the understatement of the century. Of course he needs to win something! And maybe a lot more than "something".

My point is, I think it's a big leap even for the top coaches in that division. But, a coach who still has a losing record after 6 seasons? I'd say they should be fortunate to still be wanted by their present school, let alone get a promotion 2 levels above their current division.

From the data you've provided, it seems that he's just about on par with the school's all time winning percentage. And since I see that he was 6-5 last season, and 3-8 a few seasons ago, I wouldn't classify him as being some kind of architect of a steady and sustained rise of this football program. It looks a lot more like a roller coaster to me.

Sometimes....people just belong right where they are. And I think this is true in this case also.

I'm fairly certain people would like to see RI fail, just to say they were right. Same goes with You Tube Tom.

I'm sure there's some of that going on. But I think for the most part (similar to the situation with the leader of our country) it's just that when you see someone failing, you'd rather see them replaced sooner rather than later. Akron is a D-1A program. We should NOT be a training camp for head coaches.

For me, as with the leader of our country, I pray that these men succeed, all the while knowing that none of them will.

For me, i'd only like to see them fail if it was real soon and it meant their firing. Other than that, i'm thinking exactly along the lines of GoZips....especially about the "leader of our country" thing.

Please find a different forum to discuss your politics.

Football and politics go hand and hand. How do you think Ianello got hired? He was a buddy of YTTom. How do you think Rahm Emanuel got to be Chief of Staff? He was a buddy of Obama. Very similar. The failure in both are eerily similar as well.

Understanding "trends" is exactly the reason why I posed the question. Has there ever been any coach with a losing record at D-II that has ever been promoted all the way to DI-A head coach?

I suppose I should have been more specific with my use of the term "trends". I was referring to the mathematical definiton as in "what trends may be gleaned from the data?". I've listed Winter's win-loss records below.

2004 1-9

2005 3-7

2006 6-5

2007 3-8

2008 8-3

2009 6-5

2010 5-1

If you plot the number of wins over his tenure, any logical "curve fit" will clearly indicate an upward trend. Whether or not you are impressed by an upward trend in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference is another matter.

I was a big supporter of hiring Grand Valley's Chuck Martin, but even I realize that he had the benefit of following Brian Kelly, who had built a solid program over a 12 year period there. It's much easier to keep a winning program going than it is to build from the ground up, which was the situation faced by Winters when he took the Wayne State job.

I don't believe for a minute that Martin hasn't had opportunities to move up. He's simply waiting for the right job.

Edit: I think he took the DB job at Notre Dame after he didn't get the CMU HC position.

My point is, I think it's a big leap even for the top coaches in that division. But, a coach who still has a losing record after 6 seasons? I'd say they should be fortunate to still be wanted by their present school, let alone get a promotion 2 levels above their current division.

You're delusional if you think there is a huge leap between the top D-2 football programs and the current state of the Zips.

The stock market is a roller coaster also, but analysts make fortunes paying attention to the trends.

Regarding your original question, the answer is simple. The vast majority of FBS programs don't consider D-2 coaches because they have their pick of MAC/Sunbelt/FCS head coaches. The FBS dregs, like us, do not have that luxury.

I was over on Grand Valley State University's athletics website and noticed that Chuck Martin is no longer their HC. Did he get hired away by a bigger school? According to their website, GVSU's HC is now Matt Mitchell.

I forgot. Thanks for the head up B&G. Martin took the DB job with Brian Kelly at Notre Dame. GVSU is still undefeated this year. It just goes to show that once that train is moving, it's much easier to keep it going.

One of the reasons why some people like sports forums is because they offer an escape from the political crap that permeates so many areas of the modern world. It's really nice not to have to listen to the same crap regurgitated for the trillionth time by self-annoited political proselytizers who think they're being insightful when they're really just being inciteful and rude.

I think if I had a choice between seeing profanity allowed on ZN.O or political crap, I'd pick profanity because at least it's honest. But I'd be overjoyed if the ZN.O moderators would treat political crap exactly the way they treat profanity, i.e. zero tolerance.

instead oat least even interviewing winters.they hired a coach with no head coaching experience, and losing record at N.D.

what other people did they interview,or contact? no one seems to know.all i said did they not even give winters an

interview. did i say he should have recieved the job skip zip. NO,NO,NO. then you went on to write a

book on why winters should not get the akon job.we get it.you don't like winters ;so let it go.

my only point was to find out who they interviewed,or contact about the job.it does not seem like they really

went all out to find a coach.now we are stuck with coach I.you tell me how could winters do any worse?

we have not won a game yet,and proabably will not the reat of the year.
