Dr Z
I just got an email and it sounds like the "celebration" will be before the game. LAME.Somebody should video and youtube it so that it can be viewed by fans of ZN that can't attend the game. I can't get to a game on time let alone get there early enough to see pregame celebrations on a weekday due to work.
skip-zip
I just got an email and it sounds like the "celebration" will be before the game. LAME. I'm disappointed too. That probably means it will only last a few minutes, like the Zippy mascot of the year thing. The only positive is that it catches the crowd when they are getting fired up for the game, but a was wishing for a big halftime show. I guess we'll have to wait and see if this other celebration that's being mentioned will materialize later in the month, and if a decent amount of people will be able to attend. scottditzen
This party that the soccer team deserves is just not shaping up.
MDZip
I just got an email and it sounds like the "celebration" will be before the game. LAME. This may be because the team needs to get to Baltimore for the MLS Superdraft (which I got word that Porter and many of the team members will be there). Would seem another night would have been better but you wouldn't want to wait too long for it.
yazan07
I hope they have the details of the later ceremony figured out by Wednesday so they can use that time to plug the bigger event in addition to doing a smaller recognition for the team. tbozeglav
whats the difference between pregame and halftime? Maybe an hour or so? I sure hope the reason it's before the game isn't becuase of the MLS draft. A flight to Baltimore doesn't take that long and it would be entirely possible for them to fly out after the game. The soccer team deserves a halftime celebration, not some cheesy, half-assed pregame mention.
skip-zip
To add to my original post. And I dont know why the university is being so tight lipped about this ( nothing yet on GOZIPS.com). Officially there is a tribute to the soccer team at halftime of the OU game wednesday. Also- and this should please Yaz and others. An insider at the city of Akron says "The University is planning the principal celebration for the men's soccer team at the JAR later in the month. We are holding January 18, 21, and 22 on the mayor's calendar for such an event right now. He will be involved. " Some people Im sure will start posting the mayor has no business being involved and that tarnishes the event. But bottom line im glad the university is planning an event period! The team and the fans deserve it. I'm hearing today that it's going to be on the 18th.
SPD3000
Some above posters are correct; there is an additional event planned for the 18th, tentatively scheduled for 5:30 for a more formal celebration. But the importance of the halftime event next Wednesday in regards to the soccer program and the university cannot be stated enough... RootforRoo44
Just a heads up, I emailed the NCAAondemand website asking about when the Championship game will be on sale and they told me that they "do not have enough demand for it" and may not be making one. Email them here, and request it. I know I would buy a copy!

zips4ever2008
According to the athletics' website the events are scheduled for halftime of the Jan. 12 versus Ohio game and then a formal celebration on the 18th that starts at 5:30pm. I agree the team deserves something bigger and better, but it's better then nothing. I hope they make an announcement during the Can't game tonight. Better yet, make lots of announcements throughout the game tonight.

RootforRoo44
*bump* for an answer to the above question and anyone think the weather will be a factor for Wednesday? I see the forecast calls for around 6 inches in the Akron area from Tuesday evening to Wednesday afternoon. I hope that doesn't turn people away. Remember the OU game a few years ago in the blizzard? I remember about 3 of those games over a couple of seasons. There was a CMU game also. Each time, the Zips kicked the absolute crap out of their opponent. Hope it snows a ton, and then rains a ton of 3's inside. Go Zips!

Dave in Green
Lots of snow on the ground, but the road crews are doing a nice job of clearing it. I sure hope no one uses weather as an excuse not to come to honor the Zips soccer team. Sure would be nice to have a high percentage of those who attend Zips soccer games show up for tonight's festivities. I'm planning not to yell too much in the first half of the basketball game to save my voice for the halftime soccer celebration. We really need to rock the JAR to honor what the soccer team accomplished this season.

That was Bubba's first return to Akron. If I remember correctly, the game was sold out, or nearly sold out, but it looked like only about 1,000 people made it. I remember not even being able to pull into my driveway when I got home. One of the worst snow storms I ever remember hitting Akron.
