InTheZone
http://www.cubuffs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB...TCLID=205057156 If anyone has previously posted this news, I apologize, I didn't see it on the board. Interesting that he had decided to leave football permanently and run a Christian Missionary organization. Having had some interaction with the guy, I couldn't see him being too happy doing that for long. Despite his shortcomings as a head coach, he did have an intense competitive fire that doesn't just go out when you decide to leave the game behind. Dr Z
Here is what I get from reading that article. I would think in college football, especially at Akron, you need a good long term (3 to 4 year) plan. Especially when you dramatically change schemes at the school you were just hired. By reading this article, it seems to me that JD struggles with long term planning and organization. I know that's a lot to get from one silly article, but that is what I think about when I read that. I'm really hoping that iCoach is a good long term planner. I'm willing to sit through one more season of ho hum football if our tree is going to bear fruit in 2012. PS I still reserve the right to get angry in the midst of next season.
skip-zip
First off, I wish him the best. He brought in some guys who gave us an unexpectedly successful couple of years that I will always remember. I always felt like we had a pretty capable guy at the helm when he was here, and had far greater faith in his ability than that of his predecessor or successor. Dr. Z might have a good point. Maybe JD wasn't a "long haul" kind of guy. But lets face it. In the MAC, if JD would have had a 3rd successful season, he likely would have been lured away by a big program. So, maybe it's better to have coaches come in here with a more urgent agenda, and do whatever it takes for us to win right away, because if their success becomes consistent, they're going to be gone anyway. zip37
Dr Z-- if you think 1-11 is 'Ho hum', what does 6-6 do for you? I hope JD does well-- maybe his calling is an assistant.

Zippysgotagun
Man i miss JD...he was a class act. Good luck to him. Agreed. He might not have been the best coach, but I never once heard him complain or make any excuses. Even when they fired him, his press conference was all about how great it had been here and how much he loved the opportunity. Class acts like him are a rarity any more, and I miss him too. Wally B
sans recruiting, i liked JD. All the best to him, and i hope we get a chance to see him in Ohio at some point.....
Dr Z
Dr Z-- if you think 1-11 is 'Ho hum', what does 6-6 do for you? Good question. Yes it's always about the W. I would be happy with 6 wins next year. But I can excuse 4 or 5 if we are showing improvement. Moving the ball, converting third downs. Reducing penalties. Improvement on the the O-line and the secondary. Getting pressure on the the opposing QB. Having multiple players to get excited about on offense and defense. Can I also request some good weather days for tailgating that aren't on a weekday? I wish JD the best, he always seemed like a nice guy that worked hard to me. UA Fan
sans recruiting, i liked JD. All the best to him, and i hope we get a chance to see him in Ohio at some point..... I don't know if we could ever get the Buffs to come to Akron but an early season game at Boulder would be a great trip.
GP1
By reading this article, it seems to me that JD struggles with long term planning and organization. I know that's a lot to get from one silly article, but that is what I think about when I read that. By reading the article it appears as if JD did have a long term plan that involved doing anything until a job in Colorado opened. JD doesn't want to run a foundation. JD doesn't need money because his family has tons of it already. That's the difference between JD and most others in coaching. Most would take a job in a crappy situation just to have a job. JD had the ability to sit back and wait for the right position.
InTheZone
I think Dr. Z meant JD didn't have a long term plan for building Akron football, not his personal livelihood. JD married right and wouldn't have to worry about anything for the rest of his life if he didn't want to coach.
