vs Maryland

3-1 in favor of Turtles, we've got a LOT of work to do in all aspects of the game Very disappointing performance, of course I admit to being spoiled. :NCAAC::champs::screwks:

Didn't we "let them beat us" last Spring also? :P This is Caleb mastering team positioning through making the opponents over-confident. Oh well, it beats the days of off-season games vs Rio Grande. All that matters is UA Zips: :NCAAC: Don't worry about exhibitions/friendlies.

First off, nice turnout for a spring match. A lot of schools would love to see that many people at a regular season match. Game play was sloppy at best today. I didn't see the Zips string together a lot of passes like we're used to. That will come with time and chemistry. Our back line was pretty bad today. Hopefully the freshmen can really step up this fall.

Porter tried a lot of different looks today. At one point there were 8 mids on the field with Barson, Mattocks and Meves the only guys truly in their positions. At the time Speas was up top and Holmes was tucked back in the midfield which I found interesting. A few of the individual performances that I remember well enough to write about:

Mattocks: Same old Darren. Flashy on the ball. Loves to have the ball at his feet at run at guy. Needs a lot of maturity for this team to do well this year. Seemed to be a me first guy for a majority of the match. Needs to learn to pass the ball instead of doing it all himself. Great shot on the goal from outside the box.

Holmes: I really like what I saw out of Holmes. He had a great shot on goal from a header that was cleared by a UM defender. Had another shot on goal that bounced off the downed defender over the goal. Looked cool and calm on the ball and my first impression was that he can be a major contributor for this team.

Stevenson. Started at right-back and shifted left late in the game. looked really good in joining the attack and I think that he could fill in for Kofi well in that role. Unfortunately, he was weak in defense and from my angle, I think he was partially responsible for the first goal.

After losing Kofi Zarek and Korb, I feel like our defense is a mess and is going to be the toughest thing to rebuild. Barson was really carrying the load back there. Dagilis didn't impress me and neither did Stevenson. It is going to be tough to replace Kofi; that was such an important position for our attacking system and he played it so well. I'm crossing my fingers that Yedlin and Gallego will be able to bring a lot to the table from day one and will maybe even be prepared to get the starting nod come the first game of the season. I still just don't know about that left back position though. I can't tell much about Kyle Culbertson from what I have seen so far. Last week in Michigan Genovesi did play that spot for a half like it had been mentioned a while ago that he would. Again, I didn't really see anything too amazing out of him and it wasn't really enough time to judge, but I don't think he was even there today.

As far as the rest of the field goes, we have the talent we just need to put everything together. Glad it is only Spring, there is still plenty of time for this team to grow.

Of course we're spoiled. And there's nothing wrong with that. We lost alot of good players. It might take some time.

I'm just continually amused at sports fans when they get so consumed by exhibition games, and then say that they don't matter when their team loses.

If they don't mean anything, then why do you even pay attention to them? Make up your minds :D

Ok well as the team was warming up I noticed a few players missing. I looked online and it seems that Gabe Genovesi and Richard Diaz are no longer on the roster. I made a comment a while ago that with the addition of the new players along with the returners, we were going to have a lot of forwards and some of them still were not going to get playing time, I guess someone else felt the same way. I wonder if they chose to leave or if it was "suggested" to them by Porter. It's interesting because like I mentioned a few posts above, I was in Michigan last week and I saw Genovesi play.

Remember that Genovesi also runs track for us. Even though his event wasn't on Saturday (he ran the 800 today), I wonder if he was with the track team since it was an actual tournament instead of an exhibition. It is weird if he played soccer last week and now isn't on the roster.

I agree 100% with your comments skip-zip, I would also like to point out it takes time to rebuild a new team after losing so many starters to the pro's, I'm sure Caleb will mould this team and feel sure it will be ready for the fall. KEEP THE FAITH!

Yeah that is true that he is on the track team and it would make more sense to be with a team that is actually competing than a team just participating in an exhibition game. But again, he is not on the roster which is peculiar.

Jacob, I like your breakdown. Allow me to retort.

F: Mattocks is truly a natural finisher seeking to refine his game. I think he is becoming a more willing and accurate passer. His score was a real cracker! Speas is not the starting forward; though he can get minutes there, he belongs in the midfield. Navarrette did not show much in limited time. I was disappointed about that. Where was Tulloch?

M: I was wondering if Holmes would fill the gap left by Nagbe; he will not. Instead, Holmes will fill the gap left by Ampaipitakwong (with better finishing). Great seeing Holmes finally out there, especially when he was a bit chippy in that scuffle. Brenes was OK winning the ball, though he should have done better with that chance in the first half. Otiveros was generally disappointing. His tackling was bad, his passing was bad, and he could not settle the ball on a windy day. I hope he improves. Caldwell was the same. Balogun is a strong tackler, but his passing is inconsistent. Perhaps Balogun would be better suited in the defense rather than holding mid.

D: The back line was awful. Maryland is a quality side, no doubt about it, but they made us look really bad. Stevenson does not belong back there, nor does Schmitt. Culbertson looks like he may develop eventually. Where was Afsarifard? Dagilis was surprisingly bad at knowing when to clear, when to settle, when to pass back, etc. Barson was the same. I sure hope things look different with Yedlin and Gallego. Otherwise, this will be a long season.

Can someone please confirm that Genovese and Diaz have left the program? I am particularly sad to see Genovese leave. I was really rooting for him.

Tulloch was in street clothes; he must have been injured, but I don't know what the injury is or the extent. He seemed ok walking across the field.

The only time I have gotten to see Schmitt, in Development Academy Finals couple or 3 yrs back, I could swear he played on top -- and looked very confident. What's he doing in back?
