Between sessions: The Akron Zips held open gym and it is clear the new faces added to the Zips 2011 NCAA Tournament team will give Akron a new look. Not only will 6-6 Benedictine High product Nick Harney and 6-8 Euclid High product Demetrius Treadwill have the Zips playing well above the rim, but the perimeter marksmanship of transfers 6-4 Chauncy Gilliam (Loyola-Baltimore) and 6-4 Brian Walsh (Xavier) will also be an added plus.source

I like hearing about Chauncey Gilliam's "perimeter marksmanship." Just by eyeballing him I would have simply pegged him as an athletic slasher. Hearing he can spread a defense by filling it up from the outside really makes him seem like a complete player.Go Zips!

Almost - it's actually UMBC (University of Maryland - Baltimore County) where he transferred from, but I was just going to give credit for a possible typo. Locally, kids used to joke it stood for "U Must Be Crazy" or "U Made a Bad Choice" but actually its a pretty good school, it's mascot is a Retriever (Chesapeake Bay) and the school gives Chess scholarships out - and usually finishes quite high in the College Chess Championships. You may use any of these factoids to ingratiate yourself with Chauncey.

Jzip04-- my vote for crab cakes goes to Hampton, Va [HS called the Crabbers], they're just a tad better than the Upper Bay. But a southeas wind in Hampton blows off the tailings dump, it'll knock your head off. [Or at least used to]!

That would be quite a feat considering the returning talent at their positions and the overlap that exists between some of them. I assume you are thinking of a lineup like:PG-WalshSG-GilliamSF-HarneyPF-TreeC-ZekeI dunno, I've heard good things about all 4 of those guys, but something tells me you aren't going to see Abreu, Nitro, Q and the Serb ALL coming off of the bench. For now I will have to agree with you, far fetched indeed.

Starting is overrated. Finishing is also important, and the best finishers are not necessarily the best starters. Then there's all that time in the middle of the game when points count just as much as they do at the start and finish. What really matters is that each player contribute to his greatest ability while he's on court, whenever that might be.The most powerful lineup is the one that's not diminished when the subs come in. If the other team doesn't have a strong bench, there's a great opportunity to put the game away if your subs are as good as your starters. I'm hoping that will be the case with the Zips this season. We've endured enough mid-game scoring droughts over the years that the one thing we should all hope for is that the bench is loaded with viable options.

When scoring droughts last ten minutes (and ours have), you can't attribute it to our bench not being deep enough. I love KD, but this has occurred throughout his tenure. Let's hope it is an issue of the past.
