So was he let go from Miami? or he still had a job from which he walked away to "Volunteer" with the zips?

I am not sure which scenario is worse.

Nick was a volunteer coach for Miami last season. He never intended on staying more than one year. He has been looking for full time work (business or coaching) and decided to help his career growth and resume by being a volunteer coach.

Nick approached Keith Dambrot this summer and Keith agreed to take hm on and mentor him this season. He receives no pay or benefits. He is moving his family (wife Kathy and two children) back to the Akron area in the next month. Kathy, who was a scholarship soccer player for the Zips and graduated with a BS in Nursing will start a new job with a major hospital system in the Akron area next month.

Nick seems very comfortable to be coming back to Akron. I think it is great he is spending his time helping his alma mater and former coach.

Welcome back Nick and Kathy!

From Miami info:

Head Coach: Charlie Coles (15th Season at Miami; 21st Season Overall)

Director of Operations: Nick Dials

Student Assistant Coach: Antonio Ballard

Athletic Trainer: Mike Young

It is an informative supplement. Do the Zips put our anything similar??

I knew Dials was with Miami. Having graduated from Miami....I was glad to see him there. I was unaware that he was a volunteer last year. But if I could give anyone advice (and they would take it) is that giving up a few years of earning to follow you heart is the right thing to do. Money will come. I hope he finds success...I am already impressed by his dedication.

you would think that the athletic department would find a way to get him some kind of compensation. he was the face of zips when we started our winning ways. he is a perfect example of doing things the right way (during the playing years and after). the department should embrace guys like him.

Many times, coaching is about the connections. KD is embracing him by giving him invaluable experience. He will end up with a paying job soon enough, if that's what he wants. Didn't JD Brookhart start out the same way with the Denver Broncos?

i am not sure about j.d. i guarentee that he wasnt pure volunteer though at the nfl level. i would just think that they would try to do something for someone that was important to the success of the program and is valuable to the character of the athletics department as a whole (or at least the perception of it). what was j.d. to the broncos? i would just think that they would take care of someone of their own. maybe another message the program can send to future zips...

This just seems to reiterate the classiness of Coles, to take in a player that you had to coach against, and who helped to beat your team a few times. Or maybe his cleverness, to use the talents of a former foe to compete against your current foes..
