DeAndre Yedlin

Recommended Posts

I was super impressed with DeAndre Yedlin's play against Cleveland State. Wow, talk about speed coming out of the back! Here's a nice article about him which discusses a lot of his expectations being a Zip.

I absolutely agree. DeAndre played the first half on my side of the field, and he made it look effortless to cover one end of the pitch to the other. I wished I had brought my Sounders scarf to wave as extra acknowledgment for him.

EDIT: Great article, btw. Thanks!

Some of the best quotes from the article:

O’Dea grad and Crossfire Premier alum Yedlin is getting close to kicking off his first college season with the powerhouse Zips of Akron.

Have you had a chance to talk with Steve Zakuani or any of the other Akron guys in the MLS about their experience at Akron?

When I wasn’t on the Sounders yet, I added Steve (Zakuani) on Facebook to see if I could talk to him. I chatted with him. This was before I committed to Akron and I asked him how it was and he said it was amazing and (Caleb) Porter’s one of the best coaches he’s ever had. That was definitely a big deciding factor, if this great player is givng compliments to the program then it must be a really good program. I’ve also talked to Steve in the locker room and he basically told me that if I needed anything, that he’s got me; it’s kind of like one-love I guess with the Akron family. I haven’t really talked to any of the other guys from Akron in MLS but I probably will in the future sometime.

Was Akron always the college of your choice or were there any other colleges in contention?

I was really into Cal-Poly. I got an early offer from them and the campus was amazing and the team was pretty good. I talked to my uncle and he asked me how much location matters and I said to him it’s pretty big but if there’s a school like Akron, obviously that changes everything. Right after the national campionship they messaged me and I was like wow! The whole college thing just sort of changed then. I think my last three schools were Virginia, Louisville and Akron. Akron definitely had the better soccer and that’s what I’m looking to do in the future.

Nice huh? Really did catch lightning in a bottle with Porter. Picking up kids like Yedlin and plugging them right in is pretty amazing.

Glad this thread was started so I didn't have to do it. He impressed me most out of all the new guys. I swear the kid has wheels. No disrespect to Kofi, but I think DeAndre will surpass him as a right back for the Zips.

The other two new defenders were impressive as well. Mayer looked good from what I saw, and Gallego really does not look like a freshmen. The kid has really good touch. These new guys are the real deal.

I too was impressed by the cohesion among the back four. All three of the newcomers are players.

But what JUMPED right out is how fast Yedlin was. Wow! I can barely believe saying this, but I think he is even quicker than Sarkodie. He did not show such speed in practices I have seen. Kid has serious wheels! Right Back is the funnest postiion on the pitch when blessed with such speed!

If Zak11 had anything to do with delivering Yedlin, then props to Stevo.

Sounders fan? I gotta Zakuani #11 Jersey. Got lots of jerseys, but I think that one is my fav. Love the whole organization.

Super cool that the gem of Sounders youth system is now a Zip.

I was very impressed with the team the other night, especially the new guys. It was like the team never missed a beat. They just picked up from last year. The ball handling skills were just amazing. I was also impressed with how quick the guys are and how they just swarmed their opponent when they got the ball. What concerns me about the team is that they still get lazy in the second half. They have to play strong soccer from start to finish, especially against the teams we play coming up. The Zips can't give any of their opponents reason to believe they can win.

I have a scarf for every MLS team that has a former Zip/Zips playing for them. I agree, though, that the Sounders are my favorite MLS team with Portland being a close second...organizations and fans. I'd love to see a Sounders/Timbers game at either Portland or Seattle.

He's the prototypical "modern" outside back. A small pacy guy who flies down the wing and acts like a winger when we have the ball and is quick enough to defend players when need be because of natural athletic ability. Read in that article that he is a converted back and it's the perfect position for him. Exampes of similiar players are Dani alves, Patrice Evra, Ashley Cole. 10-15 years ago you'd rarely see guys like this.

I agree.

Ashley Cole was the first of this breed, to my knowledge anyway, especially when with Arsenal.

Roberto Carlos (Brazil/Real Madrid) was the first of this breed 15 years ago.

He still captains the newly rich Russian side Anzhi. Plays alongside Samuel Eto'o now.
