ZipsNation - Fox Soccer Channel

Recommended Posts

Hey Zips Nation,I need your help. I've been in contact with a host of Fox Soccer Channel and they're looking for any great stories coming out of the Akron area from the fan perspective. They want to hear stories about the Akron fans and from the community. I want to hear from you, compile it all together, and pass it on to FSC. If and when I get more info, I'll be sure to post it here first. Thanks

My earliest exposure to Zips Soccer was in the Rubber Bowl circa 1976. Old timers remember that Soccer matches were played directly before Football games. The ACME Zips game at the beginning of the Fall seasons used to be a hunormous local draw. Consequently, sellout crowds were introduced to Zips Soccer.George Nanchoff is still the best Offensive MF I have seen play for the Zips. He was unstoppable! Off the dribble, long pass, short pass; he could do it all. George was just as technical and creative as his son is, but superior to his son athletically (sorry, Mikey). George had good straight on speed and was strong on the ball.

Sounds like the "host" is trying to make amends for referring to the AK-Rowdies by some other name a year ago -- what was it? He's a good guy, though, so humor him! :D I remember the soccer games were played between the HS band show and the football pre-game during Acme-Zip Saturdays -- however I never witnessed one as they always came about 3-4 hrs before the football game. Not sure how many folks were present -- but probably more than the 500 or so who watched at Lee Jackson in the day. I hope I can get off work at 1 o'clock to watch Friday. Go Zips!

I believe he called us the AK-49ers a couple times actually lol...Does he want history on how the AK-Rowdies started and how it grew so popular at Zips' soccer games?

Z.I.P.,If what you are saying is accurate, then there probably were not so many people watching the Soccer matches several hours before the Football games. It certainly seemed like a huge crowd to me at the time. Memory is often distorted when recalling from age 11. Regardless, I am positive that I saw many of the Soccer matches. My father made that happen. We would generally arrive before half time of the Soccer, eat after the match, watch warm ups and first half of Football. There were sometimes fireworks, I think at half time of Football.

I think the story of how the AK-Rowdies came to be so involved at the Mens Soccer matches would be a good one. From what I remember reading, the story of showing up at Virgina Tech 2 years ago and the players' reaction to the surprise appearance by the Rowdies might be good. One of my favorite memories was in 2009 at Michigan when a group of 15-20 AK-Rowdies (perhaps not even that many) were louder than the 600 Wolverine fans in attendance. It was the first time in the Akron-Michigan series that the visiting team won (5-1 Zips).

I forgot about the AK-Rowdies being called another name last year on FSC. Lol. We'll get that corrected this Friday. This actually is not for the Friday night broadcast. Its for another show aired on FSC. "We Live Soccer" about the passion of soccer fans. Anyways, they will be in attendance Friday night. The American Outlaws were on in last months episode. They used footage from the USA/Canada match in Detroit, the game I attended. Anyways, the host(she) of the show contacted me and was looking for some good stories to cover about the fans before and during the game. I already mentioned lots about the AK-Rowdies, hopefully they'll meet up with the students at the march and get some interviews in the crowd.

okay lol. Do you want me to write the history of how the Rowdies first got involved with men's soccer? headaviatorrowdie might be better to explain it then i am, since he was there when Porter asked about this. I wasn't there. Just putting pieces together from what I've heard Porter tell us Rowdies and what other people have told me from the "Goal Patrol."

Sure, I don't know all the history of the AK-Rowdies. I'm probably like you, only know bits and pieces. I've heard a little of the Goal Patrol idea before. Any info/history/traditions/etc you can give me, I'm sure it would help out. I'm probably missing a lot of info I could pass along. I tried contacting the head rowdies, haven't heard back. If you rather send it in a email, you can send it to aoakron@gmail.comThanks

We are confusing memories… with “stories coming out of the Akron area from the fan perspective”. Memories are cool... but the color analyst doesn't need to go too far back in time to make an interesting comment during the game or at halftime. Maybe some of you can share someting that makes Akron look good... today! Here's my input...Topic:We are in NE Ohio… one of the most “Championship Starved” areas in the USA.Personally… this doesn’t bother most fans too much… like me… and we have had relatively recent years where we had the best team in the NBA… the best team in Major League Baseball… and the Browns… there just hasn’t been much good to say about them for a few decades…Ohio State keeps giving us hope… and occasional glimpses of a premier program… in Football and Basketball…But… the PREMIER sports team in Ohio is the Akron Zips Soccer organization. We are not just having a few good years… we could have a dynasty here in the making. We manage to get the best players available… and we mold them into even better players with Porter’s guidance. We “Build Champions and Pursue Championships”… as Porter says. Even in the “Recruiting Challenged” situation that we had after 2010… where we landed a few of the best players in the country… but then suddenly needed several more players after the SuperDraft… we were able to assemble a premier college team… again. We have become a leading conduit to pro soccer. Topic:Porter also says that one a player visits the campus“it’s an easy sell”… as we have some of the best soccer facilities in the country… one of the coolest college campuses in the country… and some of the newest… largest… and coolest dorms in the world.Topic:It’s also an easy sell converting other fans… into Akron Soccer fans. In the last year… I converted a die-hard Browns fan into an Akron Season Ticket Holder… just by taking her to a game. I also converted a Harvard Graduate school grad into a "University of Akron" fan… because she loves the campus (she is a highly respected, well-known, global Design Architect)… and she is also following Zips Soccer now. She is currently (Today) looking for a way to follow the New Mexico game on Fox Sports World Canada. If you want to show your Fox Sports color analyst some pics of the campus and dorms… I have gathered many… and I can forward them to you if you send me a private message with your email. Probably… they will not have time for a campus tour.

Goal Patrol: Basically was an idea within the ROWDIES to try to get them to Soccer games. Summer of 07 Coach Porter met with us saying hey heres what we want to do (win a national title) and heres how we want to do it. Basically saying we dont want to lose at home and we need you there. So 2007 1st home regular season game vs New Mexico (ironic i know) goal patrol was born. Zips won 3-1. That year was a struggle to say the least, "hey come to soccer" wasnt that easy to do. We didnt really know soccer chants, we more or less a basketball group trying to do soccer games. But most importantly the 20+ we had every game built a foundation to what we have now. We may have not known what we were doing at that point but we were dedicated to the team and coach Porter. That year we lost only 1 game at home, against USF in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament. That game to this day is still the only game we have lost with the ROWDIES/Goal Patrol in existence for soccer. ROWDIES: Following that 07 soccer season we had discovered that UConn already had the name of Goal Patrol, at that point we knew we were going to be something big and wanted to be unique and wanted people nation wide to know us for OUR name not anothers name. So thus AK-ROWDIES was back to being the name of the soccer student section.08 and beyond: Its funny to think about the 07 and 08 seasons because the fact we werent that much established yet, Coach Porter used to give Pizza IF we got 100 ROWDIES there. Now we get 100+ at the march alone. Break through occured in the 09 season. Bc of the combination of success in 08, to the fact we had big names coming into "The Pouch" (Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan State) and the fact the ROWDIES were growing, soccer games became unique and something special here at Akron. We brought in horns, the samba band, made chants to fit Akron, all of these things helped make Akron the toughest place to play in College Soccer. 2010 was great for attendance and making "The Pouch" even better. New attendance records were set, so on and so forth. Bus Trips: When we do a Bus trip we do it big. We have had great success on Bus Trips with the only losses being Northwestern (sweet 16 of the 2008 NCAA Tournament) and the college Cup finals (damn you Deigo) We have been to Buffalo twice (2 buses the 2nd time) OSU twice (3 buses full both times) VT, Northwestern (2 buses) College Cup in Cary NC (Both Games.) This year hopefulley to Alabama! The Pouch: Name established by former Zips player CJ Kauffman. We used to call it "The Jack" but when we found out the players called it "The Pouch" we switched to that.Other Coaches: We have grown nation wide, which is a great thing to the point where coaches come over to us and ask us how do we do it and wished they had us. Coaches from WVU, CSUN, TOSU, MSU, NIU all have done this.Famous Games: New Mexico in 07 (first game Goal Patrol was there for) NIU in 07 (MAC Semis, first time and only time we rushed the field.) WVU in 08 (First time we really filled the hill) IU in 09 (Packed hill, revenge from 06, the Porter factor) OSU in 09 (again crazy atmosphere, beat them 3-0) Hartwich 09 (come from behind win, sealed the perfect regular season) CSUN in 10 (First game at the new "Pouch" Tulsa in 10 (1 vs 2 attendance record) Cal 10 (crazy game, shout out made back to the College Cup)The Hill: Its what we are famous for, its our home. Fill the HillI Believe: Yes its done other places but just seems different here. The team does it with us which makes it great. We are known nation wide for it.- hope i covered everything, any other questions let me know.

Thanks
Also... another bit for the Fox TV guys...The ladies play at 1:00 PM... and the first game of the Akron Tournament is at 4:00 PM.... so the field will not look as immaculate as usual for the 3rd game of the day at 7:00 PM. They should probably mention this!

Well, if you're going to pull the Switch-o, Change-o on me, then...Never mind... ;) Anywho -- how does FSC manage to massage their American broadcast ops with the "International Headquarters" in beautiful downtown Winnipeg? :rolleyes:edit/added: For anyone who was wondering what I meant: Here's a story on Fox Soccer Channel's Winnipeg HQ I'm a big Machado fan, but can you stand Jeremy StLouis, and that awful woman in the hamburglar glasses?
