Overall time of possession was unreal for us.

ZachTheZip
What a great atmosphere. The Rowdies were absolutely livid during the early parts of the game thanks to two incidents that occurred during warmups. OSU's head coach punted a ball directly into Zipsnation's very own Yaznasty. Around the same time their goalie walked behind the goal with ball in hand and, unprovoked, threw it into one of the student's heads from about three feet. johnnyzip84
There looked to be about 100-150 red & silvers next to their bench, and quite frankly they were louder than the Rowdies for much of the game. Maybe the incidents Zach mentioned caused the Rowdies to be cautious. Holmes is going to be so much fun to watch! He controls it well, plays smart, and has wicked power from either foot. Yedlin finally got a reward for one of his eye-popping runs down the right flank. Beating that school will never get old. Great job Zips! The people I was with all thought the same thing. I think the Rowdies can be kinda spoiled. I'll just briefly mention that the bandwagon is much bigger for our nationally-ranked soccer team than for our basketball team - even though our b-ball team deserves the Rowdies to pack the JAR like they do FirstEnergy Stadium. I'd be afraid to see how sparse the diehard soccer Rowdies would be if our team would go .500 some year. I doubt we'd have a parade to Cub Cadet Field. Also, we've become so accustomed to utter Zips' dominance that unless the Zips are scoring or threatening to score, the Rowdies aren't making much noise. With soccer there should be a constant "buzz" coming from the student section/Rowdies. Not just when the Zips put the ball in the goal. tbozeglav
the issue stems from the simple fact that some students have turned the game into a social event and take more pleasure and chatting with friends than participating in chants. Being one of those "core" rowdies, I can assure you we were trying to make as much noise as humanly possible, but when you have 1800 students and a minority are actually fully participating, its difficult. Ive noticed a TON of underclassmen who, understandably, don't know our chants but aren't making much attempt to make noise. I can't tell you how many times Ill be screaming my head off and look immediately to my left to see some freshman or sophomore who found their way to the front socializing with some friends instead of participating. just my $0.02 its hard to be unbiased when youre standing in the student section... ZachTheZip
You see this all the time. The noisy students were diluted in a sea of silent, texting, fair-weather fans. The sheer volume of the crowd forced the core fans apart and it was very difficult to get anything going. On road trips, the noisy Rowdies are all in one compact group and can use their voices together to create more noise than opposing fans who are often spread out. Around the same time their goalie walked behind the goal with ball in hand and, unprovoked, threw it into one of the student's heads from about three feet. Alright so here is the story from my end of the field. We came into this game ready to tear John Bluem a new one mainly because of his comment last year about how Konrad Warzycha "could have got a yellow" on the play where he kicked a ball at Darlington's head. I honestly thought before the game "you know, that guy really had it wrong on that call, but maybe he couldn't see what happened clearly because the game had just ended and he hadn't reviewed it, or maybe he was just sticking up for his player." I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. After tonight, no way. So we are giving him crap, yelling at him and playing the game where we keep the balls from their missed shots and don't kick them back until someone comes for them. Then, one of the guys next to me is really giving it to Bluem and telling him how awful he is. Rude? Yes. ROWDIE? YES. Acceptable for college students? Yeah, it's college sports. So Bluem walks over and gives him the worst glare I have ever seen. Literally, I was waiting for lasers to shoot out of his eyes. But instead something else happened. The 58 year old head coach of THE Ohio State University men's soccer team purposely kicked the ball at a 22 year old college student. He took a step and kicked it at him, on purpose. Funny part is, apparently the guy can't aim and he hit me instead. Did it hurt? No. Did it bruise? I wish. Was it completely unacceptable? You bet. They sure are class acts down there in Columbus. It's almost like we need a section on the hill for the "Super" ROWDIES. It's really hard to get into a chant if no one else around you is joining in. As for me, my throat is sore, so I did my part... mes102
That's what happens when you get the students show up that has never been to a game in their life, and decide to come to this one. I've been to every home football, men's soccer, women's soccer, and volleyball match so far, and I got stuck in the 3rd row today. People in front of me were socializing. I was not happy. With how many students are there, it's hard for us to hear what chants are being said when you're all the way on the other side from "officers". With that many students, I hate to say this, but we might have to schedule our chants. Start the "Glory to the Zippers" chant around 40 minute spot, "Zips Marching In" around the 35 minute mark, etc. So that everyone knows what chants to do at what time. That's the only way I can think about it working with that amount of students. It's easier to get 100 students on the same page than 1,800+ students... Of course, common sense in the 2nd half please. When Meves is in front of us, please be quiet on corner kicks and free kicks. If not, don't let the gate hit you on the way out. Let's just say that many people didn't have common sense tonight... Some students feel that it's good to just show up all painted and that and not say one word. "We're fine." NO YOU'RE NOT. YOU. ARE. PART. OF. THE. GAME!!!!!! Don't like it? Later ...Student Union's open til 11pm...hope to never see you again. I'm tired of these students. It's unreal. I was louder than the people in front of me for 90 straight minutes. By the way, from 4-6pm I was at a high school yelling at athletes during conditioning/weight lifting workout today for basketball preseason. Drove down I-77, walked into "The Pouch", and started yelling at OSUcks while warming up. Then for all 90 minutes I yelled and chanted. No excuse for the others. My soccerhead was on, but I moved it back to yell more since no one else was helping around me. Then, they laughed at me or gave me a sarcastic "you're stupid" or "you're an idiot" look while I'm saying it. Don't let the gate hit you on the way out, either I could not hear Ohio State's students, so I don't know how all you could of, but whatever...couldn't hear much of anyone around me either... As for my athletes at the high school, we have preseason workouts for them tomorrow. Luckily for them, I may not have my voice back by then... Same here man. Sometimes I spend just as much energy yelling at other students as I spend yelling at the goalkeeper. Then they just stare at me like I'm an idiot. We have the strength of 2,000 students for about the first 5-10 minutes and then it just tapers off. Once we get a lead it gets worse and then we try to come back after we get scored on. I wish I could make everyone care more. Attendance records are awesome, and nothing in the world looks more impressive than looking on the hill and seeing it packed with students. But if only some of us are going to cheer, I'd rather the rest leave so at least those of us trying to support our team would be close together and more capable of coordinating chants. You get your wish in Football. I am for ALL students and fans coming to the games. It may be better for Rowdies to get their own section to keep the voices close and to max decibel. But let's not have a litmus test to be a Zips fan. We need everybody
tbozeglav
My personal take: if youre going to stand at the front of the student section, you are required to make as much noise and heckle as much as humanly possible. If not, move to the back. Let those of us who are there to support our team and uphold the Rowdie tradition show you how it's done... EITHER WAY... I hope the noise we did make was well recognized. I don't want people to say that the OSwho students were louder than us... they may have been more organized since there were fewer, but we have the potential to be obscenely LOUD. I just want to know we did well... haha. i didnt lose my voice for nothing....
