g-mann17
I don't think it's been mentioned yet, but the thing that impressed me the most about last night is that it appears that the new guys are quickly understanding that Akron Basketball is about playing DEFENSE. Beyond that, I think I am seeing what I expected this year. Quincy is turning his potential into reality. He may be ready to darn near carry this team. On several occassions we were able to get past defenders to the basket. When was the last time, if ever, that we could say that about an Akron team?I know we've beaten this Miss. State program before, but to start the season with so many new players and beat any SEC team on the road is a good thing. And we can keep debating about how good Miss. State will be this year, but it's still too early to tell. I'll hope that in the coming weeks we may find out that we beat a good team.To go with what you are saying. What impressed me with the outing is that we got sloppy and gave away a lot free points (maybe some ref bias in there causing that, but still kind of sloppy), then we shot awful from the perimeter. The past 3 years those two things mean we lose by 20 points. But despite not playing our top game, we still dominated. I think that is huge. We created scoring opportunities in the paint, Zeke and Nik out muscled a 280 lb guy to get us second chance opportunities, and Abreu and Diggs can create fast break opportunities. If we can get that kick out three to start dropping consistantly then we are an extremely dangerous team. Not to mention we shut down one of the top SEC players, not a good SEC player, one of the top 5 SEC players. We struggled with his type all last year. This feels really good. Blue & Gold
I might be missing it (I hope I'm missing it!) but I don't see a story about last night's victory on the Akron Beacon Journal's website!

Dave in Green
Checking the record books, last night's win over MSU was more impressive than the Zips' previous win over MSU.When the Zips beat MSU in December 2005, it was on a neutral court (Puerto Rico), not on MSU's home court.MSU was in a down year where they finished the season 15-15 with an RPI of #112.Zips were in an up year where they finished the season 23-10 with an RPI of #74. Dave in Green
Another good stat: Zips' win over MSU boosted them up to #82 in the Pomeroy Ratings.
JeffQ78
Another good stat: Zips' win over MSU boosted them up to #82 in the Pomeroy Ratings.the only flaw I see in that ranking is that they have Can't St. at 63 which does not make any sense whatsoever. Congratulations to coach Dambrot and the rest of the staff! That Canada trip was well timed. The team looked well prepared for that game. ....and congratulations to the coach and his staff for being in a position where you get asked for interviews by a girl who looks like that My thoughts EXACTLY. The only thing that would have made that better would be Erin Andrews. Pomeroy's rankings are anything but bogus. They are consistently regarded as one of the top statistical models in the country and are used by a ton of division 1 coaches as an ancillary tool in scouting. It shouldn't be surprising that MSU fell so far because they didn't play very well last night. If they play better games their ranking will undoubtedly go up. It is still extremely early in the season and so 1 game can and does have a tremendous effect on the statistical model and can skew results at this point. Much like the RPI, it only becomes valid by perhaps the end of the OOC schedule when enough games have been played to account and mitigate the effects of outliers. It's not some conspiracy theory to keep mid-majors down as some would like to believe. Not to mention they still use data from last season for teams who have yet to play a game (which is almost everyone in college basketball right now). In fact everyone above Akron except Texas A&M and Arizona haven't even played yet. I'd expect Akron's ranking to go up as teams that are over-ranked due to last season fall back the more games are played. I believe us to be one of those teams. There are a good several in that category ranked above the Zips right now.

Districtballer
Jeff Goodman at CBSSports has an article with KD here. It's a bit of a bigger deal than the Bleacher Report. Congrats on the national coverage! http://eye-on-college-basketball.blogs.cbs...283066/33217228It had been four years since Keith Dambrot's team knocked off a BCS school. This coming from a MAC program that has won at least 20 games each of the past six seasons - and made the postseason each of the past four years. Last night Dambrot's Zips pulled off the first upset of the young 2011-12 college basketball campaign with a 68-58 victory over a talented Mississippi State team. "Usually, we're not very good early in the year," admitted Dambrot, whose honestly is refreshing in an industry in which it's also a rarity. Dambrot said this was the worst his team has looked in practice in any of the eight seasons since he took over in 2004. "I honestly didn't know what to expect," Dambrot said. "We've got a lot of good pieces, but we have a lot to learn."He's certainly got the coach-speak down. Despite the victory, Dambrot remained level-headed. He's not upset that his team isn't going to New York City next week while the Bulldogs will advance and play at Madison Square Garden - even after the loss. "I'm a mid-major coach," he said. "Nobody understands that better than me. That's the way this tournament is. Nobody wants to watch the Akron Zips next week. They want to watch the big boys. I want us to get to that point, but I wouldn't invite us right now, either." "Most likely we're going to have to win in March to get in the NCAA tournament. I'm a realist," Dambrot said. "This wasn't going to make or break our team."If Mississippi State comes around to being the top 40 team they were predicted to be, I think this very much counts as a marquee win in the event that you need an at-large bid. Districtballer
So we beat them and they get to go to MSG? Another insult, like when Romeo and company did not get a bid.Yeah most preseason tournaments are like that now to make sure ratings don't dip in the semis. The organizers of these tournaments don't want to take a loss if a mid-major crashes the party. This is the case for most of the major preseason tournaments with the exception of the preseason NIT tip-off. We played in it last year and beat Wake Forest by 21 on their home court to earn a trip to MSG where we lost by 5 to Tennessee and then beat UCLA in the consolation game. Most of these tournaments are designed to keep the mids out, but you guys won the games you could and made enough of a statement with your play. Hopefully you guys can knock off West Virginia (who has looked slow coming out of the gate in their exhibitions, they lost 1 D2 game) and that should give you a decent chance for an at-large if you take care of business in the MAC. Valpo Zip
I am not sure why people are unable to accept that Can't is a good team. They were really good last year and they return all but one player. So why exactly are you surprised that they are ranked in the 60s?I would love to see them ranked even better than that...it will make beating them so much sweeter

Dave in Green
Merriam-Webster defines passive-aggressive as follows: being, marked by, or displaying behavior characterized by the expression of negative feelings, resentment, and aggression in an unassertive passive way (as through procrastination and stubbornness). From my personal observations on different internet forums, passive-aggressive is often inappropriately used to try to pin a negative label on those who state their opinions politely but firmly. Districtballer
ESPN gives you some love to make some noise out of the MAC. Andy Katz goes over some mid-majors to watch and Akron is among them, mentioning Zeke and Cventinovic (although they butchered his name lol). http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=7215740 Detroit is also being picked to beat out Butler in Horizon as well. Blue & Gold
Dick Vitale was watching last night. Or at least he gets LeBron's tweets. He tweeted back to LeBron after the game, and got a knock in on the fact we aren't going to MSG: "Akron 68 - Miss St 58 - let the fun begin - yet Miss St will go to Madison Sq Garden- not a tourney."
