The Hip Zip
Can't take much out of the Hiram game but one problem was getting out and defending the 3 ball. This hurt us a lot at times last year and hope that it will be addressed. There was no way Hiram was going down low with the ball so it should have been a point to defend the arc. I think we got lucky against MSU that they missed a lot of their 3's. If they started hitting them we would have lost the game.

Maybe... but if McClannahan made his shots it would have been a blow out. Woulda, coulda and shoulda...3 people I have no use for.
Dave in Green
First half: Hiram 7-16 from beyond the arc. Second half: Hiram 3-8 from beyond the arc. Did Hiram cut its 3-point attempts in half in the second half of the game because they weren't happy with the results, or was it because the Zips made adjustments at halftime and defended better in the second half? Our perimeter defense is awful. Our opponents know by now to keep reversing the ball and make us defend which we fail to do. It looks like the Keystone Kops out there when the Zips call their switches (often missing the switch). Seems our star athletes are more interested in scoring than defending. No way should a Hiram team get over forty against the current crop of Zippys. Ball reversal on the perimeter against a zone is the way you attack a zone. Akron rarely plays zone defense. Thus, our guys are not staying with their man. Why?
Dave in Green
Good points. Aaron Stefanov, Hiram's 3-point shooting ace, played only 6 minutes in the second half. Stefanov had a total of 13 trey attempts for the game while all the rest of the Hiram players took 11 attempts altogether, and no other player took more than 2. I think the switches will go smoother with experience as players in the different lineups get more used to each other. But it's true that playing tight defense at the arc has not been a strong point for the Zips in recent times. In the players' defense, I'll just say that after soundly beating MSU on the road, it had to have been hard to get up for a DIII team at home. The players looked like they were trying to have a little fun out there, and playing tight defense is not fun. It's exhausting. KD was obviously not happy with what he saw on perimeter D. But he also seemed a bit more tolerant than he would have been if the players had been that lax with a stronger opponent. This was the last easy game before a string of tough ones. I expect to see them returning from this little "vacation" playing tighter D in upcoming games.
Zip Watcher
The guy was shooting from Goddard-ville. You don't extend the defense to 30' and then let the little guys dribble around your 6-7 SF. You take away the paint and mid-range .. and dominate the glass. Did the Zips win by 30 or 3? I seem to recall 30. B) B) Go Zips!
GoZips
KD promised on the post game show that the Zips are in for a grueling week of practice. They will prepare for both games at the same time. Team probably getting on the bus right after Thursday's practice. IMO, our offense is way ahead of the defense. Unusual, but fun. November is a tough test for the Zips. The only easy mark, Hiram, has been played. If the Zips exit November 6-0 you will start seeing Akron in the near Top 25 also rans. 30 to 35 would be my guess. Like a 90th best team should get rated.
Dave in Green
The guy was shooting from Goddard-ville. ..... Funny, I told the guy sitting in front of me at the game that Stefanov reminded me of Nick Goddard. He was firing away without hesitation from well beyond the arc.
