ZachTheZip
By the way - if Akron and Charlotte win their next games could we be at home again next week? Yes.
Blue & Gold
Bring on the mustangs. I think we leave dallas on Sunday with a win. I know they are ranked #6 but on paper they don't look particularly daunting. This was a HUGE win for us in more ways than one. I agree. I really like this draw. The Mustangs are only 13-6-1, though they did play a pretty tough schedule. Marshall seemed to give the Mustangs all that they could handle, tying SMU 1-1 in 2 OT's in their first meeting, and then falling to SMU 4-3 in the C-USA Tourney. GoZips
i reached out my hand and shook the head ref's hand as he exited the playing field and then sarcastically said "that was the best officiated game I've seen here all year...you suck". Though to be honest, those calls were bad but it didn't affect how we played. We bounced back every time and kept the pressure up. If we play like that every game, we will win 99% of them. I am amazed and pleased by your approach to the head referee. I was close the the rowdies on the north side of the goal when they exited accompanied by security guards. Odd, thinks me, not since the Cal game last year did I see any need for security for officials. Those three cretins definitely needed an escort. Tom Wistrcill, do you part and force the NCAA to review the calls. Such blatant favoritism has no place in collegiate sports.
Blue & Gold
I thought the team lost a little focus in the second half, but I also believe the Ref in the middle was horrible. I'm not sure what was called to give NW the penalty kick because nobody fell down and it seemed like everyone was bunched up where he called the foul. Prior to that Mattocks was taken down in the box (there was a huge divot where he was taken down) and the referee called it out of the box. Finally, with the game coming to a close (couple minutes to go) Mattocks turns with the ball and right in front of the ref is pushed down with both hands.....no card! In bounds ball...different guy and Mattocks is pushed to the ground again with no card. Glad to see the team keep their composure - - would love to see more attacking, but seemed like a good win. Northwestern didn't seem very good either and were very sore losers. Simon What's-His-Name (Frenchie's color man w/ the wicked English accent) said that penalty was truly a bad call - a phantom foul - and had a handful of his soccer-savy friends from around the country (and world?) who were watching the game online text him during the game telling him that there was no foul to be called in that instance. Terrible call & really could have shifted the momentum & eventual outcome of the game. Fortunately the Zippers came right back & laid waste to the Northwestern defense as Mattocks buried a ball in the back of their net!
GoZips
Drove up from Columbus with some friends to watch the game. My impressions from the game: 1. We lost the ball on lots of errant passes. Especially during the second half. 2. We do not often regain possession when Meves kicks the ball to midfield. Why?? 3. The attendance was much smaller than expected. And quieter. No band to blame. I made the trip because I was impressed by the email from CP. It was a 4.5 hour round trip for me. 4. Holmes is a monster in tight space. It opened up at least 3 opportunities. Like how he played today. 5. Referees were very inconsistent. Most of the bad calls went against the Zips…but a few went our way. I would prefer a well called game and let the chips fall where they may. It was a great experience. My friend and his daughter loved the game and they are OSU grads. Liked it when the students on the hill started the ZI PS chant…and I tried to get my area involved out of respect for mes102 and the other Rowdies here. Wish there was more chanting…it does make the game and culture unique. Go Zips Punts usually result in 50/50 balls. If you take note of the results of punts you will quickly discover that about 2/3 of them come right back to the punting goalie in the form of an attack. This holds true for all high level soccer matches, pros and college. Watch and you will see. The best way to insure near 100% retention of a ball put back in play by a goalie is for him to outlet the ball to one of his defenders and have them take the ball up the pitch. Concerning Meyes, he has a "weak" leg and most of his punts come down near the midfield line. With last night's wind he had no business punting the ball. Most of his punts came down short of midfield resulting in easy attacks for Northwestern. I am by no means a soccer expert. I can discern poor play (most of the time). Personally, I would much prefer a different goalie between the posts. GoZips88 and I go round and round about this. He loves Meves. Me, not so much. Blue & Gold
Just wanted to give a shout-out to the 'Rowdies who did show up last night. It was awfully cold. The, no pun intended, fair-weather 'Rowdies stayed home. You guys are the real 'Rowdies! Now we need all you real 'Rowdies to pack the JAR! He excels at the reaction saves, without which, we may have lost vs. NU. Three of his saves last night were SportsCenter shtuff. Since half (at least) of all punts are lost anyway, punting is not especially valuable in soccer. However, Goal Kicks are much more a concern. I will take David Meves over most; he is a winner. That being said, Evan Bush was better.

On an earlier play, Mattocks was WELL INTO THE PENALTY AREA...WITHOUT A DOUBT on a play that only resulted in an Akron free kick. I was astounded when the ref stepped in and pointed to spot outside the box. I have no idea how me missed the correct spot, other than an intentional effort to not give Akron a penalty kick. And his willingness to give NU a penalty kick later on with a horrible call reinforces my belief even more.

It usually takes a pretty hard foul for a ref to award a PK. You'll often see when a soft foul occurs near the edge of the box, the ref will call it, but pull the ball outside the box. They'd never admit to it, but it's somewhat common. That said, to then give up a ticky-tack PK the next half was complete BS. I was right behind the goal and saw absolutely nothing there. While on paper their schedule looks difficult they played and beat both Duke and UCLA earlier in the season before both of those teams got reasonably competitive. Additionally they were only 4-3 at home. We win this one

Obviously you did not not see the foul. Those of us who did have reported the circumstances. I had a clear look at the foul. Mattocks was taken down from behind with a hard shove to his back. A divot resulted the size of a dinner plate. The linesman had a clear look at the foul and did nothing. This was a foul that deserved a PK. The PK that Northwestern took was awarded for what? There was no foul. No player from either team went to the turf. No punches were thrown. It was a common melee of pushing and shoving. The only fair way to award a PK in that situation would be to award both sides a PK. I am always amazed that bad officiating is usually justified by some one. bobbyake
Soccer America College Cup opening round recap I find the attendance numbers from around the country pretty interesting. Kudos to our fans given the temperature and wind chill last night. We had the best attendance in the NCAA on Thursday, and are 3rd best in the nation. We've declined a little bit over last year but what we have is still special. Plan on tailgating for every home game next year. Will renew my season tickets as soon as they let me.
