g-mann17
Go look at his roster, the size is better than ours. You will see guys from Shaw and St. V and other area schools. He's already paid his favors to big high school coaches. He can totally recruit upper tier MAC talent. Plus his assistants, surely some will come with him, already understand the MAC. He unified a campus much like our own. It's what we need.
GoZips
To be totally honest. I would prefer Paul Winters over most of the available coaches.
Blue & Gold
Good idea, g-mann. Wayne State's football roster Though I, of course, want the search committee to find and hire the best coach out there, I'm pulling for Paul Winters too. I think he'd be another KD here. Or CP, even though CP's not a native Akronite, he sure is a loyal guy. Also, it'd be nice to see a coach who really goes hard after the local talent. I'm pretty sure PW would do that. He's a successful head coach who has his team in the quarterfinals. Plus he's a good guy; the kind of coach I would have loved to play for. Not one who screams/berates, but a positive, encouraging motivator. (At least that's how he impressed me.) I like him.
ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net
I really like what I hear about Winters. I hope he gets the offer and takes the job. To have a guy with his experience, knowledge of the area, ability to recruit, and to build an offense, would be like a very pleasant dream after years of pain and football depression. A solid UA football program would be like going from black and white to color. Imagine reading about good local kids being offered and then committing to UA. Imagine it being more difficult for douches like George Thomas to backhand UA...

Tom has done a nice job covering Zips football & basketball. It has been tough to write about football the last few years. Now, we will be getting George Thomas to cover the Zips. It looks like this might be a step backwards.

Mike Beaven will continue covering soccer and hs sports & Jim Isabella will cover hs sports as well. There is no one else on the BJ sports staff covering hs sports or the Zips. Zipsrifle
I trust the search committee will select the best coach for Akron. I have not done a lot of Homework, but I have to admit I am pulling for Winters. I like the HC experience, the fact that he has rebuilt a program that was in shambles and that he is an Akron guy. I want a KD for our Football Program. With any luck, we'll play in 5 straight MACC games!!
RowdyZip
To be real honest, I'm pulling for Winters at this point too. My main issue is people trumping him up to be a Dambrot for football. Those are some big shoes for a younger man. Dambrot has said this is his dream job, and he's not some young guy looking to move up. Winters is a relatively young man, fairly early in his coaching career. I don't doubt that he holds some pride in his alma mater, but I think it would be foolish to imagine him coming here and sticking around for a decade with consistent success. Not that I wouldn't want that to happen...

I'm trying to get excited, but really so names really give me hope. When it comes to Winters, how many casual fans would you think even know about him? Unless they followed the Zips back when he was on the team, I don't think most fans today would take that as a selling point. Not to mention the jump from D2 to FBS is quite a jump. Even FCS to FBS makes me a little nervous, unless it was a guy who won multiple championships.

Not that I disagree with your general point, but KD recently turned 53 and Winters was a SR RB at UA in 1979 (my 1st year at UA), so they have be very close in age. Good point...and after examining further, he has been coaching for nearly 30 years including about 8-10 years at the division 1 level. 8 seasons as head coach at DII Wayne State as well. Good resume. I hope he gets it.

They guy had no experience making game day calls on either offense or defense, and it showed.

PW was OC at Akron for a few years and man, did we put up points! For me, he has sufficient experience in the MAC to put me at ease.
