Blackburn was a better player playing in a defense not suited for his ability.
Chase was "big" muscular dude when he played for Akron. Brian's body is not the same. B's motor is high, and has great instincts. I kind of compare him to a Jerry Olsavsky. Undersized, but in the right spot at the end of the play. I wish him the best whatever the future holds for him.

This was a hot topic on the tOSU forums a week ago. Remember, Wagner had 15 tackles in the Zips-tOSU game this year, so they had a good opportunity to scout him and evaluate his ability to perform at the level expected of tOSU linebackers.

Which forums?

Coach Bowden was with Joe Dunn and Steve French at half time during the game tonight. For those of you who haven't heard he said that he will have 7-8 coaches hired by Jan 2 (WOW!) to start recruiting and he also said that right now he is also working on the most important recruit for this year, Brian Wagner.

Smart! Before PW turned down the Zips, I said that should have been his second phone call. Looks like TB and I are on the same page early. It's Brian's decision, but I'm glad to hear Mr Bowden put it as high priority. Let's see if Mr Bowden can out recruit Urban Meyers right off the bat?!?!?

Zips are bowl-eligible in '12. OSU can't even compete for a league title. There will be PLENTY of buzz and media coverage of Akron next season, as Coach Bowden will bring eyes to NE Ohio to see how quickly the Zips can begin turning the corner. Brian Wagner would certainly STAND OUT among all the attention. And don't think Bowden doesn't have some NFL ties to get this kid the notice he deserves. Seriously, would Wagner rather stake his future on the anti-Coach who just trashed his soph and junior years, along with the clear-buffoon Weis, who sold the Browns a completely false bill-of-goods in Brady Quinn and can no longer be taken seriously by NFL GMs......or the respected Bowden legacy and an honorable rebuild of the only D-1 school that offered BW a scholarship?

There's much to be said for loyalty, Brian.

I'm tired of the Wagner ass kissing here. If he leaves UA for his final year of eligibility he's nuts. This thing is going to turn around and he can be the big fish in the little-ish pond as things turn for the better, or he can go join another program and hope and pray that things work out. If he's got NFL talent he'll end up in the NFL, regardless of which program he comes from. Especially when the new coach is basically begging him to stay in public, I will think much less of Wagner if he leaves at this point. I respect him keeping his options open until now but it's time to sign up for year one of the big turn around. It ain't going to be any better, and you ain't going to be noticed any more, anywhere else, BWags. Have a few beers for the new year and get into the gym to prepare for the new Zips dude.

If I could ask Brian Wagner any question, it would be the following. "Given the current make-up of the Zips coaching staff, where do you think you will learn more about football that will make you better prepared for a possible NFL career....OSU or Akron?"

His talents are his talents and that won't change at either school. What he knows will help him be more presentable to an NFL team. The answer to the question is Akron.

I would really like to see Brian come back to Akron. Why would Akron be a better showcase than OSU? I think Akron is a safer play for him and most likely he could fall in as a late round NFL pick. OSU on the surface has great upside though his NFL hopes might be dashed if he doesn't hit the ground running in a tough transition.

I am a bit confused about all this. What do we really know?

I did not go bach through every post in this chain, but my understanding is that Wagner has put in whatever paperwork that he wants to be "eligible" to transfer. Other than that, Rasor mentions wants more exposure for NFL and some Buckeyes' forums mention getting him. Could it just be that he wants to go to a progam that is likely to get wins and go to a bowl next year, which means NOT Akron and NOT Ohio State and, really, NOT NFL focused.

If Wagner goes to OSU it will be as a walk on. Next year is a rebuilding year for them. They will not be starting a transferred senior linebacker when they have the the young talent at LB that they already have and are getting in this next class.

If he wants to sniff the NFL he is better suited starting at Akron at lb as opposed to being a st player only at OSU.

With TB as the coach he will probably get more exposure than with Ianello.

In all honesty, if he truly wants to transfer, his best bet is going to Cincinnati. He is from Springfield, UC might be down next year but still would be hard to not be 6-6 and bowl team. UC is a similar type campus (urban) and they have a good coach with good defense and a positive environment. I am not ENCOURAGING him to go at all, but based on his background, UC's background, the situation...UC would be near the top of the best type of place for him.

Probably? That's a good one.

Edit: On second thought, he will be on the field a lot less with TB, so "probably" could be a proper term.

If he decides to go to OSU, it will be on a full scholarship that will be offered to him in the near future if not already.

I would argue the smart decision by OSU would be to start Wagner and red shirt as many as possible since nothing is on the line next year.

It is the smart decision and that's what they intend to do if he goes to osu. They don't have any confidence in their current LB group. Nothing to do with red shirting or saving anyone for the future. OSU can't have another 6-6 season next year or Les Wexner will string the rest of their Athletic Department up by their privates.

If true, and I was his adviser, and he wanted to play at the next level, I would advise against it.

I don't know the answer to this, but how many NFL LBs did WVU produce while Rich Rod was the coach? Brian is the kind of undersized kid Rich Rod looks for in this type of defense, but that may not turn into NFL success.

The most logical step Brian should take if he is interested in the NFL is to stay at Akron and play for the new staff.
