Bring On The MAC

I like the way the schedule is set up for the East, where we start with Miami and BGSU on the road, where we should be able to win and get OU and Can't at home. For this team that would seem to be a good way to start. At the end we get three East homes games too. I do not, however, like the MAC West setup. We get what are likely the three toughest MAC West opponents on the road.

I predicted 7-7 going into MAC play and everyone said I was crazy. I claimed I was being realistic. Well I was only off 1, so it was a pretty accurate wouldn't you say?

Now looking at the MAC schedule I could see us going 11-6, ending with a record of 19-13. Most likely the 6 losses would be from Can't 2x, Ohio 2x, and we usually lose a few to scrub teams like Buffalo and Eastern.

Zips would be a lot better than 8-6 right now if not for the injuries and suspensions.

If the Zips stay healthy and suspension-free for the rest of the season, they continue to morph into a monster and kick butt in the MAC.

If there are more injuries and suspensions, the rest of the season could be like the first part.

+1

Look at it this way. 8-6 is absolutely as bad as it could have been when you consider the Zips have ZERO close wins but several close losses.

No way this team goes 0-4 vs. OU & Can't State.

Well this comes from a person who thinks U@B is a "scrub team"

I just think they are a Canadian team. :)

Seriously, though, they have arguably the best player in the league in Javon McCrea. McCrea will probably struggle against Zeke's length, much like Justin Greene of K-ent. I'm also very interested in seeing how Tree matches up with McCrea.

So with 17 games, are you predicting a win against an unknown Bracketbuster opponent?

That being said, Buffalo probably is the best team in all of Canada.

So the next seven games for the Zips are -- @Miami (we never seem to win there), @BGSU (first trip to the Stroh Center), OHIO (home - potentially the best team in the MAC outside of Akron), @Buffalo (nothing like a January trip to the great white north), Can't STATE (home - always a tough game but winning at home is a must), @BSU and @CMU.

I would have to believe this piece of the schedule has to bring at minimum a 5-2 record. The two home games with OU and Can't are must wins because they are in our house. I would love to see a win against Miami. KD is 2-2 in the last four games at Millet Hall. As Trimmy pointed out though our team seems to find games to sleep walk through and I'm hopeful it won't happen, but it just seems to be the way they roll.

What is everyone expecting from the next seven games? A 13-8 record heading into a February with 6 home games out of 9 works for me as the team continues to grow together.

While sports pundits and most polls are generally ranking OU and Can't well above the Zips in terms of MAC favorites, Ken Pomeroy's sophisticated method of measuring team strength currently ranks the Zips pretty well even though the Zips' 8-6 record is not that great.

Here's the way the top MAC teams rank among all DI schools in the current Pomeroy ratings:

67. OU

73. Zips

78. Buffalo

79. Can't

The next 2 MAC teams in the Pomeroy ratings -- Ball State (#136) and Western Michigan (#153) -- trail way behind the top 4.

It appears that the mathematical formula for the Pomeroy ratings gives a lot of credit to the Zips for their good wins and doesn't penalize them excessively for their 6 losses.

We have two decent road wins, and Middle Tennessee is now sitting at 58 and getting some votes in some polls, so that RPI hit is diminishing. And the close loss to VCU is probably an RPI wash. Suspensions and injuries notwithstanding, without those back-to-back losses at the Valpo tournament, especially the neutral-courter with Duquesne, our RPI would probably look a lot better.

I like the conference schedule because we don't have a 3 game in 5 days stretch like we have had in the past. As MD pointed out, what I do not like is that we get the three bottom feeders of the west at our place but hit the road to face Ball, Central and Western on the road. When it all shakes out those are the top 3 in the west. I think by the time cross over play begins it won't matter a whole lot but we did get the short end of the stick in that regard.

A little respect for the MAC in the Midmajor top 25 and in Joe Lunardi's "bracketolgy". For those who don't know, Lunardi predicts who will qualify for the tournament and where they stand. Ohio got it in as the MAC representative based on their RPI I am guessing. Anyway, he has them rated as a 12 seed which is pretty neat. I know it means nothing now and neither does the MM top 25. Still, just a little more sexy to look at IMO then years past.

Zips not so strong in the MM top 25 (yet) but have the same amount of votes as Butler :thumb:
