Akron's new architect, Terry Bowden, certain that Urban Meyer will win fast at Ohio State: Bill Livingston

By Bill Livingston, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Terry Bowden, the master rebuilder, said he never had a "get out of jail free" card.

His Auburn players already possessed everything they needed a generation ago to overcome NCAA probation and the loss of hope it can foster.

"There was a lot of pride and hunger in the older players, who remembered the teams of the 1980s, when Auburn produced NFL players and was in the top five in the country year after year," said Bowden, the new coach at Akron, of the 1993 Auburn Tigers.

In 1991, Auburn had a 5-6 record. In 1992, the Tigers were 5-5-1. The team began the 1993 season on NCAA probation because of boosters' violations under the administration of coach Pat Dye. The Tigers were ineligible for a bowl bid or for the Southeastern Conference championship.

Bowden was in his first season as coach. The Tigers went 11-0 and finished fourth in the country. They remain the top example of coping with probation.

I disagree...I thought this was a complete bull$hit article. Instead of doing a piece on our new coach they do a piece on Urban Meyer and ask our coach questions? This is worse than just ignoring us...this is rubbing it in our face that we are second class cititzens. Akron isn't relevant enough for their own article.

I see your point BZ, but I still think it's a decent piece. Bill had a chance to compare two situations that are similar, and took advantage of the opportunity at hand. Coach Bowden's name is in the headline, photo, quotes..etc. I like how Terry is on Sirius/XM, PD, Yahoo Sports, ESPN, PTI, and other media outlets. The more coverage, the better. Terry has done more marketing by himself since he has been here than....ahhh forget it. Terry gets it.

That's the same impression I got, and it stinks. But, at least it's another mention of Bowden. That's worth something.

Couldn't disagree more (@ Big Zip).

Here's why. Akron articles WILL come IF they are deserved. Now being positive, there is no reason not to think that we won't be trending upward. We should be a vastly different program in a few seasons time.

Now there's a time to be emotional, and a time to be logical. As of today, we are arguably THE WORST team in football. In stark contrast, right now Ohio State has, by far, much more readership interest in both Akron AND Cleveland. This includes a vast number of casual fans who are interested in "big time" football. Given time and success that is surely ahead for us, I believe Akron can and will win over this large segment of football fans.

Under the guise of a Bucks article, those casual fans just got a thourough and GLOWING background on Terry Bowden, the "Architect of the Akron Zips." Our coach was introduced in the most positive light imaginable.

The faithful here are already amped on the future. But we die hards are still a minority, that is the perception and the reality. Our continued success is going to depend on reaching out to the undecided masses and literally winning them over to our side. The print media isn't dead (yet) it is still very much an integral part of the process.

Great article, and very relevant tying in OSU's current probation woes with the probation success that our own newsworthy coach enjoyed at Auburn. Don't see how anyone couldn't grasp this. The media is not Akron's "publicity agent." When there's something relevant involving the Zips program, they'll report it. When there's not, we should be ecstatic to even be mentioned in such a positive light in an article like this.

Before Terry Bowden, UA football was irrelevant when the PD wrote about tOSU football. The PD wouldn't have even thought of quoting anyone associated with UA football in a tOSU article.

Terry Bowden brings a level of credibility to UA football that extends so far as to make him the primary source of quotes for a tOSU article.

Terry Bowden is being established by the PD to its readers as a head football coach who is on a similar level with Urban Meyer, which will cause people to generally consider UA football to be at a higher level than they may have in the past.

This is a whole new level of respect that we Zips football fans aren't used to dealing with. We're used to tOSU football being placed on a pedestal and UA football being ignored. We're used to any reference to football at UA and tOSU in the same story to be positive about tOSU and negative about UA.

There is nothing at all negative about a tOSU story in the PD that focuses as much on UA's new head football coach as tOSU's.

I agree with this.

More kids playing football in NE Ohio read this article about Urban Meyer than would have if it was just about Bowden, yet the article put Bowden in the light of a bigtime/primetime football coach whose opinion on other coaches matters and who turns around programs big and small. In other words, recruiting in NE Ohio (for what that's worth) was most certainly not hurt by this article. We aren't competing for OSU talent. We just need to better-than-MAC talent.

...and to be honest, when I read that chip-on-shoulder comment below the PD article, I was a little embarrassed. It makes Akron fans look like crybabies. Our program was the worst in football over the last two years. We have no entitlement to favorable coverage. Respect is earned. However, I appreciate the fact that everyone is free to express their opinion.

+1

This is a great article that showcases the knowledge of a coach who has been there before and is at Akron now. To me this is a win-win. I love it!

Ever here the saying, "there's no such thing as bad publicity"? This article would not have mentioned Akron at all before the Bowden hire. Be glad for the mention.
