Ak-Rowdies

Even though i love the fact that there is a student group supporting our team, I am starting to think that we need to be more agressive in our remaining home games and in the Q as well. The main reason why the ak-rowdies existed is to make a supportive environment for the zips and intimadate the other team. While i know that we are doing the first part, i am not sure how are we doing in the second (intimidating the other team). The best example of a student section i have seen so far is the OU o-zone, (i know some ou fans will come here and start bragging about it but oh well... they deserve some credit). In our game in Athens, when our team went on the floor, they were booing them like crazy and they were physically so close to the floor they could touch the players and i saw the looks on the face of Linhart and Rybak (like what the hell is that !). And when our team players where introduced, all the o-zoners turned their backs to the court and booed loudly.More over, everytime the refs made a call against them, they booed so loud and even started chanting the BS chant so loudly that the ref asked the PA to announce that they have to stop... i know that they stopped but believe me the refs were thinking a million times before making every call afterwards. Not to mention how many times they yelled at KD to sit and shut up and so on. Same thing in Can't where the refs were also making ill calls because of the thousands booeing every call they make against Can't... Even in BG, we were leading by 20 in the beginning of the 2nd half and the fans were chanting with the band (la la la la la heeeeeey... you suck !) and pointing their fingers at us ! (we were beating them by 20  )Now let's see what do we do ?When the other team comes in the floor, we don't even notice because no body is in their seats yet. And then when their team is introduced by the PA, the AK-rowdies are chatting with each other and no body is booing except me and may be 2 other people. The worst part comes when the refs make stupid calls against us in our house... people are like (ooohh come one !). I am sorry but if we don't boo the guy for like 40 seconds he won't feel that he is doing anything wrong. The worst part is the idiot from BG who wanted to start a fight with Dru last Tuesday, and guess where ? in our house and 2 ft away from the ak-rowdies' South Bound seats. That incident made me realize that we are not exactly doing our job. Had the JAR been a hostile environment for guests, that idiot wouldn't have the balls to do what he did.P.S: Please note that i am not asking that we act in a non civilized way and use obscenity or anything like that ! I am only saying that we should use the (legal) ways more agressively to intimidate the guest teams.

Yeah, if the JAR ever gets rennovated, the seats should be on top of the floor like that.More home court advantage, like when teams build stadiums for more crowd-noise accoustics on the field.I would never advocate violence, but if anyone gets rowdy in OUR HOUSE, particularly if they are starting Sh*t with our folkz, that person should be severely intimidated! All I can say is they are damn lucky I wasn't in proximity to that. Perhaps I am lucky I wasn't in close proximity. :wall: Overall, I totally agree with the spirit of your post. This is not a pro-event. This is a college atmosphere. You got to expect a certain level of crowd-exuberance! Riots and mass hysteria? no. Hardcore Rowdiness? Yes

SKHORBOTLY & ZEN, I just got to love youse guys. Youse got it! Dayumed if anyone else does. The JAR is clamped down tight. Way too much dead people in the blues.I love the AK-Rowdies. This is the best thing to happen to Zips sports since the days of Memorial Hall where the fans chanted "Here we go Akron, here we go" the entire game. They did it right through the cheerleader routines. Never nasty, just insistent.ZIPTRUMPET87, I remember that. It was an effective way to light up the crowd. Time became politically incorrect to diss your opponents. But, hey, Peggy Eliot and her passle of lovers have left the building. Let's bring that back.Perhaps its way too smaltzy, but in the old days they use to dim the house lights and use a single spotlight to intro the Zips.At Cant and I'm sure at Ophew the students rightly deserved technical fouls several times. Only no ref had the onions to call them. Or, worse, they sympathized with the belligerency. BUGS was so so. At least their students are close to the floor.I miss seeing the clip from the movie RUDY we use to show just before the start of the game. This is our house; defend it.One extremely effective chant the AK-Rowdies have used of late is "Air Ball" every time an opponent's star player touches the ball after he makes that goof. Twice it has clearly rattled an opponent the rest of the game when it became persistent. In the words of Al Pacino from the best guys into chicks movie ever made , "Antonio, Rocket, RedSteve, fug you, too".

As an AK-Rowdy, my random thoughts on this...- I do agree that the crowd needs to do more to the opposing players, although it has to be good and creative for students to catch on. Maybe someone could find pictures of these guys on facebook or something? - What I DON'T think we need to be more like is Can't. The constant obscenities and middle fingers coming from the student section was an embarassment. I hadn't remembered crowds being like that in previes years at Can't State, and I had always respected their crowd a great deal...until this year.- Last year the athletic department would pass out information about some of the opposing players...things like funny real first names, nicknames...stuff like that. - I'm sorry...although i like that people are trying to be creative, the Romeo chant is horrible...

the Romeo chant needs to be thought about. Either yell ROME -E -O, OHH. OHH. once, or twice. The first time is loud and strong. The second time only half the people say it, and it sounds like crap. keep it in unison. Do it enough one way, and everyone will catch on. Much like the HIXON, HIXON, HIXON, chant in football.
Or we can just not do it at all :)

i agree. we get some good cheers but our rowdies section isn't always together. one of the games each end was chanting something else...lol...it'd be nice to have like a cheering practice to get everyone on the same page.i like the romeo chant, but think it should be limited to saying twice.

So I hear all of this talk of people thinking every one should be a bit crazy and push the ball and come up with new chants. Ok you can walk the walk but can you talk the talk? If so there is a topic called Ou research- a place for you to post your crazy ideas and thoughts. So i want you to walk the walk and post your thoughts.Go Zips

OK, here we go. I have been waiting for this one!YOU MUST APPOINT TWO STUDENTS TO TAKE CHARGE OF THE ROWDIES!! This is the ONLY way it works at other universities. Especially with the section split. One leader at one end, and one at the other. Gues what else? Other schools have organized cheers that ALL the students know. even if they don't know to do it, the leaders handle that. There are cheer sheets passed out in advance of the game to coordinate this. Oh, and they practice two! They meet outside of the game to practice the chants. Also, they have one central meeting place outside the arena that they students meet at. Someone peps them up to get the energy level up. They then travel en mass to the arena keepig the noise going right to their seats. They arrive at the seats with 20 minutes of game clock (warm-up) left as this is usually when the teams and officials take the floor. It sure is a lot of work, but this is how most of it happens. So who will step up the last few games this year? Who will take charge of leading and recruiting??BTW, another item that is effactive is the bleacher rumble. This happens when the students begin rumbling their feet on the aluminum floor at their seat. The rest of the fans will follow. Once that happens it becomes deafening in the arena!! :screwks: :macc:

ziptrumpet87 has the start of my suggesetions, but didn't explain it. Take the school newspaper in, and when the other team is being introduced, EVERY student opens up the paper as wide as possible, in front of their faces, arms outstretched, and the entire student section becomes one big mass of newspaper (nobody pays attention to the other team). I've even seen some schools not only open the paper like they are reading it, but turn their backs as well - totally disrespecting the other teams intros. Then, when it comes time for the Zips, everyone turns back around and puts the papers away, or throws them in the air and knows its time to get ROWDY!!!Then, if you want to take it one step further, after the intros, everyone tears their papers into little confetti (I don't know how the school will like this) and holds on to it until the first Zip basket is made. At that point ALL the students through the confetti into the air, and the game is on.

I like this idea!

The newspaper and confetti thing is done by Can't State so you probably will not see it at Zips games.Matt Newhouse, a current student, has done a great job with this group. He had the visior to take it to a new level this year. From what I have been told their will be some truly unique things coming up at the remaining home games. Be sure to post your thoughts on the AK-ROWDIES section of this board. If other fans want to get in the swing of things do so from whereever you are seated. Why limit the fun to only the lower level end zones? Get a group of 5-8 fans and join in - the result is that others will join in and the whole place will be electric. This takes time but we need fans of all ages to join in and be energized from the start. The guiding charge for this group is...1. Be Pro-Akron - if you are loud and proud you are a factor in the game2. No Profanity - You can be more effective by being creative with your words and chants. Anyone can regurgitate profanity, but something out of the norm will get inside the head of the opponent.3. No Destruction of Property - We have enough challenges already. And when playing Can't State... 4. No mentions of May 4, 1970Our hope for this group is that the students will be energized by our team and be consistent for our remaining games this season and for many years to come.As with Marshall '04 FB and the '05 FB postseason we ask you to come early, be loud, and wear your Akron gear to the game. If you see someone with Browns, Indians, Cavs, or dare I type Buckeyes gear on at a ZIPS event give them grief and urge them to get their BLUE & GOLD on. The most dedicated fans do not wear other team colors to Zips events!See you on the 25th and thanks for your support!UAM

I've heard it discussed before, but I still think the Z..I..P..S..ZIPS! ZIPS! ZIPS! Cheer would work just like the J..E..T..S..JETS! JETS! JETS! Cheer does so well in New York. The more students that come and show great support, maybe just maybe they give the students the chair backs (or portion of) on the team side of the court. I know wishful thinking. But then us season ticket holders could fill the entire blue seats. Keep up the good work and keep growing.

Everything stated in UAM's post is dead-nuts on. That's the template for making the JAR a classy hell hole that no opponent wants to visit. Yes, a "classy hell hole!"I selected the quote above amongst the others because I think too many fans sit around waiting for the University to give them signs...give them cheers...give them handouts...essentially put the "fun" on an organized platter for them to participate. That has to change. The fans need to be more creative on their own...more vocal on their own...more entusiastic on their own. The stuff the University Marketing Group and the team have given Zips fans in 2005-6 has been awesome. Stunning. A level to which the University has never witnessed. However, if it is going to be take to "another level," it will likely come from the grass-roots level. The fans. It is up to all of us to pimp the Zips and rock the JAR. Not just UAM...or the cheerleaders...or the Beacon.Wear your Zips shirts to work on game daysWear your Zips gear when you travel out of statePimp the Zippy's kid's club at your kid's day care/school ($20.00 gets you free admission to all Zips sporting events for a full year + a tee shirt? How unbelieveable a deal is that?)Hell, there's a million ways to help out. I hope everyone on this board pisses off the blue hairs next to them when we play OU and Can't. Next season there will be a huge demand for tickets. If some old fogeys don't want to get with the program, there will be plenty of new blood to take their place.Beat Nevada!!!

I used to have a home-made Zips tie (blue with yellow/gold stripes and the self-stick Zippy patch that was handed out years ago) but I haven't seen any in a long time. I think the demand is down for ties since most workplaces don't require them anymore. I'd love to see a new one tho... it'd be great to wear to church (I deal with the Sunday school kids there a lot).

GREAT THREAD! This is good stuff. Being so far away, I'm left out of the BB hoopla. Glad to see some students stepping up to get things in gear! OK, here's an idea, building upon what some others have posted. The AK-OLDIES will remember what happened when we left the theater after "Days of Thunder". For the AK-ROWDIES.....think "The Fast and the Furious". Everyone was squealing their tires driving like a madman! The point? A good movie will get people FIRED UP!! The leaders of the AK-ROWDIES should approach whoever is in charge of the cinematography Dept. (if one exists) at UA and see if the students in that area could put together a move. The movie would be a compilation of the GREATEST Akron Sports Moments with KICK @$$ background music. I think the old Theater in the basement of Kolby is still there. Hopefully it has a movie screen and a stage. About 1hr. before the game, the ROWDIES meet in that theater. They hand out any special shirts, etc. and practice their chants. :ninja: Then, about 25 min. before the game starts... The lights go down and the Movie Starts. Music BLASTING, ROWDIES getting ROWDIE! When everyone is good and fired up, they are escorted through Memorial hall and over the bridge to the JAR, chanting the entire way (man that bridge will be loud). Into the jar, they make a lap of the track, CHEERING LOUD AS HELL, getting the entire crowd into it. They are escorted to their seats just before the opposing team is announced. By now, the ROWDIES will be fired up, the fans will be fired up, and the opposing team will be taking a :john: Of course, a little bit of Athletic Dept. buy-in will be needed for the escort, etc. They could also help maybe pay for the movie? The same movie could be put on a bigscreen overlooking the lower lot at the Rubber Bowl about 1/2 hour before the game! The Cinema students could get credit, and they could redo the movie every year or so to keep it fresh! If there isn't a cinematograpy dept., I'm sure UA has SOMETHING that deals with students shooting movie or TV spots.
