Offensive and Defensive Lines

I hope Coach Bowden and staff recruits heavy on the offensive and defensive lines. I noticed that we have been getting pushed around and getting dominated in line play. Akron's O-line and D-line seemed smaller in size compared to most of other MAC Big Boys. If we can control the line of scrimmage, on both sides of the ball, it is a good foundation for success.

Most important, and often the most overlooked thing (Especially by casual fans), is line play. Football is won and lost in the trenches. Line play on both sides of the ball was poor last year. Especially on the offensive side, and particularly in the area of pass blocking. Part of the reason why the quarterback play was lousy in 2010 was due to the lack of pass blocking on many instances.

Ask Colt McCoy if an O-Line is important. Ask Dick-J if a D-Line is important, especially when he watched his defense give up 200yards rushing a game.

Ask the LSU offense if the line play is important. Anyone who watched that game last night saw what a dominating defensive line can do to a good team. Alabama's d line made LSU look like our 2011 offense. I hope we can put together a dominating defensive line and and offensive line that will allow us time to make plays.

These two groups will benefit the most from the coaching change. Our d-line played well against OSU, at least in the first half. As the year progressed, they were worn out. Our RBs had some good games so there is something to work with there.

Spread offenses don't require great offensive linemen (see Oregon). They rely on a well coached offensive line working together and blocking well at the point of attack. Creative playcalling helps with a spread as well (see Oregon).

I'm not sure what the future holds for the defense, but there is something to work with there if JUCO players aren't found. It may not be great, but there is something to work with.

Better play calling would have helped the offense. we were far too predictable. We had so many 3 and outs that put the D in a hole and put them baxk on the field as well. If Oren W had the talent to start 3 yrs at M State, I presume the talent was there. I think others around him looked OK too. Creativity is not limited to the O. I know many of you here are protecting yourselves from a let down, but I will be surprised If we don't win 5 or 6 games next year. The "Process" lead to complacency. "Dag nab it" win enthusiasm will bring out the best in what we have!
