The punt is the single most important play in college football because field position is so important and teams don't score each time they have the ball. If you can out net yardage your opponent by five yards each punt in a close game and each team punts let's say seven times, you've forced your opponent to add 35 yard to their offensive total to equal your field position totals. It forces the other team to increase their offensive production 5%-8% which is no easy task. A punter can win a game for you. If you have a bad one, they can hand all momentum over to the other team.
