The guy got off easy but has supposedly turned his life around, enrolled at Toledo, and beginning to earn a degree. Amstutz is giving this guy a chance. He is not guaranteed a spot on the football team nor is he expected to make any contribution. The guy was a former Mr. Football in Ohio, but in reality Toledo is already loaded at RB and doesn't really need him.Still, the story of a former convict trying out for the team does not help Toledo's image. But if this guy gets his life straightened out, makes the team, and is as good as advertised, he may bring Toledo and the MAC to a different spotlight in NCAA football.

Replace "Toledo" with "Marshall" and you've got a well-used Coach Pruett line...probably used it a thousand times.

What I wonder about this Ray Williams deal is ... who is paying for his education? Is this convicted felon on a football scholarship? Or, is he on state aid there bygiving Toledo a "free" player funded by us the Ohio taxpayer? He sure as hellis not going to college on his own nickel.Enquiring minds want to know. <pun intended>

Whatever. You don't even know the whole story. You spun the truth to stir the pot.

Either he is getting financial aid or his parents/guardian is paying for his education. He does not have any scholarship with Toledo.

I know the whole story. It was in the Cleveland papers for several months.Ray Williams was convicted (not accused) of manslaughter and aggravated assault (not speeding and improper lane changing). There's no spinning manslaughter and aggravated assault...unless you are the one trying to diminish it's severity. The Zips can win a division and MAC title without Ray Williams. We proved it. After last season, it is apparent Toledo feels it now needs some sort of edge to acheive the same level? Keep drinking the Kool-Aid, Rocket fans. :CK_brew:

We won a MAC title in 2001, 2004. I don't recall anyone on those teams being convicts.Plus, Williams wasn't recruited by Toledo. He enrolled at Toledo when a judge told him to get into college and start his education. He is a walk-on attempting to earn a spot on the team. Granted, their is a potential back lash if things go south, but Williams is generally being ignored by Rocket fans because we don't need him. Also, achieve the same level? You win 1 MAC title and already you feel like you are the top dawg in the conference? Let me bring you down to earth. 7-6 is not that good of a record even with a MAC title. Plus, I know Toledo represented the MAC well this year in its bowl games, but I'm sad to say that Akron did not.

Ahem, msopher. I was going to ignore your response and let you have your say, but then you said Akron did not represent the MAC well in the Motor City Bowl. You are WRONG. The Zips got beat, but the played with heart and with pride and left everything on the field. They had nothing to be ashamed of, and represented the MAC just fine. We'll see you in Toledo this fall, you just have your boys ready. :macc: :macc:

Can you please refresh the Zips fans regarding your last couple trips to the Motor City Bowl? You guys REALLY represented the MAC well!!!:rofl::rofl:Toledo Beatdown #1 - Click for Gory DetailsToledo Beatdown #2 - Click for More Gory DetailsWhat an absolute joke to belittle Akron's effort in this year's MCB. Don't you think ESPN reaches Summit County?Good luck with Lawrence Phillips...or Ray Williams...or whomever you picked up.

ut's demolition of a good utep team in the gmac bowl was impressive. probably the high point for mac football for the year. they did the mac proud. and everyone i talked to thought akron represented the mac well. memphis just beat them that day, almost exclusively due to deangelo williams. no disgrace there. he's great. but really, this talk about how awful it is that toledo is giving raymond williams a second chance is a bit much to take. does anyone here seriously think that if williams was enrolling at akron and trying out as a walk-on that zip fans would be ripping jd? of course not. the toledo fans would be doing that!btw, the ut mcb blow-out last year against uconn was a direct result of their losing qb gradkowski and rb scooter mcdougal in the mac conferecne game against miami. ut went into that game crippled. their blow-out loss to boston college was because bc was the superior team. i love akron, but toledo's a good program and tom amstutz is a good coach and a good guy, and it's not being disloyal to akron to point that out.in any mac - non-mac matchup in any sport, i always pull for the mac team. well, except for one mac team. it's always fun to watch them lose.

I wanted to type that earlier but I thought no Akron fan would understand. Apparently, I was wrong.
