The exercise might help him loose some weight too....Maybe Coach Amstutz's recruiting "tool" of Big East entry in a "couple of years" may have to wait as a result of this development. The wild-eyed optimists and apologists at Toledo will say this "doesn't matter" and that they won't skip a beat in their program---but it WILL matter, whether they choose to admit it or not.Weren't some of their posters (and Can't's, too) ragging on their academic superiority to us...particularly of late??? Well, this is a quantifiable slap back at both at them.Go Zips!!

fear the brown roo
but on the positive side, they picked up a CONVICTED armed robber and murderer. nice program that only Can't can come close to with their own convicted rapist db two years ago. ziplock
but on the positive side, they picked up a CONVICTED armed robber and murderer. nice program that only Can't can come close to with their own convicted rapist db two years ago. And when you read their rationale and excuses ("hey, he served his time" Marshall-like banter) for wanting this guy, it is also laughable. Maybe they should view some of the court transcipts of his trial. He (the "student") should be thanking the justice system for the veritable slap on the wrist he was given in comparison to his acts of commision and omission in the case. His "best" friend lay dying in the street and he went back to the young man...not to help him but to retrieve the frickin' cell phone they had stolen together earlier that evening. He then left the scene, allowing his buddy to bleed out. I hope his new teammates aren't looking for him to watch their backs! This kid has some serious issues, despite his apparent talent. msopher
Too bad for you guys, the 6 scholarships won't hurt us. We use less than 80 of 85 available scholarships in previous seasons. And somehow we still win MAC titles and go to bowl games? Amstutz must be a great recruiter.

JBinOH
Problem comes when that fat coach is sitting in little Jimmy's living room trying to explain to his parents how the academics of his football team is not up to snuff. Especially since little Jimmy needs a quality education because more than likely football after college is not going to happen for him. What a nice image, a fat ass coach trying to talk about strength, discipline, honor and integrity in his football program and his 'scholar' athletes aren't even up to par and he doesn't have enough personal discipline to manage his own body. Have another donut coach. Why stop now? Also, if they don't pick up the slack next time around, well, they start losing things like BOWL GAMES. liljc
WOW, JB was harsh, lol..... I agree with you that coach Amstutz is not much to look at, but I actually have a lot of respect for the guy on game day. He's built a pretty nice program out there. Kinda like the one JD is building here. There is only one difference as I see it. Our program is on its way up? Which way is Toledo's heading? Time will tell. And somehow we still win MAC titles and go to bowl games? Amstutz must be a great recruiter. It doesn't hurt immediately but it does hurt, it hurts the fact you could have given a scholarship to a deserving walk-on, it hurts your image, it hurts your so called reputation, and depending on how much publicity this gets it hurts future recruits that may be on the bubble trying to decide between going to Can't or Toledo. So yes it does hurt your silly little rockets.
liljc
Ryno is correct. It's a blow for your reputation. I heard at least 3 times yesterday on 3 different national radio shows that Toledo had been penalized. Some say that even bad publicity is good publicity. We'll see, I guess. Dr Z
Too bad for you guys, the 6 scholarships won't hurt us. We use less than 80 of 85 available scholarships in previous seasons. And somehow we still win MAC titles and go to bowl games? Amstutz must be a great recruiter.Full article-----------------None of the eight Division I-A football teams cited by the NCAA hail from one of the six BCS power conferences, while only one such program, new Big East member DePaul, was among the 15 flagged in men's basketball. (Arizona, Arizona State, Kansas and Texas A&M are still appealing their results and could well show up on the final list.)This peculiarity would seem to contradict the widely-held belief that the nation's big-money football and basketball factories are the ones making a mockery of academics. If you believe this report, the real problem lies in places like the MAC (Toledo, Western Michigan, Buffalo and Northern Illinois underperformed in football), the WAC (Hawaii and New Mexico State) and, most notably, at historically black colleges like the MEAC's Florida A&M, Hampton, South Carolina State and Maryland-Eastern Shore.-----------------By contrast, Toledo's athletic department, one of those penalized Wednesday, has three full-time staff members in its academic advising department. The obvious suggestion would be to hire more, but that's easier said than done when your athletic budget is a more modest $14.8 million. "It's more difficult for schools in our position to find funding for tutorial support and summer school," said Brian Lutz, Toledo's assistant athletic director for compliance. "It's a challenge to find enough hours in the day for our academic advisors to devote to all the student-athletes that require attention."------------------MAC commissioner Rick Chryst believes the playing field will be leveled once penalties become tied to the NCAA's new Graduation Success Rate -- an improved version of the old federal graduation rate, which didn't take into account players who transfer and graduate at another school -- in 2008. His league was one of the most heavily penalized Wednesday, and yet in the first GSR report released late last year, the MAC and the ACC were the only football leagues whose public-school teams all graduated at least 50 percent of their players."We're supportive of the APR as a tool, but it's still just a snapshot in time," said Chryst. "Publicly, the dominant measure should be graduation.
