Porter: “He’s not an elite athlete and he’s not the fastest guy, but he’s one of the most technical players I’ve coached and one of the smartest players I’ve coached. We built our style around possession and there is no one better out there when it comes to possessing the ball.”

That pretty much sums it.

He is technically flawless and seemingly ambidextrous. Note how Caldwell always passes with the correct foot, keeping his body between the defender and the ball. Most professionals cannot do this, mostly striking the ball with their dominant foot! Efficient technique compensates for moderate athleticism, as does superb endurance.

Also to Caldwell’s credit is excellent tactical awareness.

He will likely enjoy a solid professional career. If he so chooses, I think he would make a phenomenal head coach someday.

Nice find. Thanks.

EDIT:

Due to the MLS home-grown player rule, the New England Revolution has the option to bring Caldwell onto its roster without having him enter the MLS SuperDraft. Caldwell trained with the Revs for the majority of the summer.

“I suspect that is what will happen with Scott,” said Porter. “Interestingly, he’s still a guy that is a bit under the radar. He’s not an elite athlete and he’s not the fastest guy, but he’s one of the most technical players I’ve coached and one of the smartest players I’ve coached. We built our style around possession and there is no one better out there when it comes to possessing the ball.”

If New England does indeed pick up Scott, I'd love to see him and Blair Gavin playing together again at a match vs the Crew in Columbus, or better yet, I'd love to go see them in Foxborough.

A quick FYI, Chivas USA plays @New England on Wednesday (8/29). Not sure if Blair is starting for the Revs. The acquisition of Shalrie Joseph has pushed the team's most improved player, Ben Zemanski to the bench behind Joseph and Nick LaBrocca. Sad that. I won't be surprised if this is Robin Fraser's last game (if it's an 'L') at the helm, as Eric Wynalda kind of predicted prior to their draw at Colorado last week.

Well, let us begin the Porter to Chivas rumor right here.
