Dillon Serna is in my composition I class and I was working with him on his first essay. He said with Porter leaving and the attention paid to him by pro teams, he plans to leave after this season.

Not sure if it's been noted or not, but I figured I'd pass it along.

I really like Dillon and wish he would stay at Akron longer, but I certainly would understand. I just want it all to work out well for the guys. I can't thank them enough for coming to Akron. I hope they'll be successful at winning an NCAA Championship, but moreso, I hope every one of them is successful beyond Akron on and/or off the soccer field.

This is what I suspect will happen with a number of our players, especially if we make a complete change. Also, I don't see any way that Caleb and his staff will be able to effectively recruit for next season without a decision (soon) on the next head coach.

I think MLS teams have been happy for players to stay at Akron under Porter because they don't have to sign the players, but they know our players get professional level experience in our system. A complete change in our system will change this.

Zesty, I do hope you mentioned to Dillon that your were intending to blast this news to the world. Otherwise, you may need a new study partner. ;)

Eh, he's been pretty open about it with the whole class. He's a good student athlete; he contributes in class, shows up, turns in stuff on time. He's realistic though. He wants to stay this year so he can keep a good relationship with Porter, but after that he'll get paid. He noted that he wants to get a contract stipulation that'll pay for school, just in case.

Good head on his shoulders.

He's a Rapids Academy product, if he is ready to leave Akron they will definitely offer him a contract. Unless, that is, he is trying to get something better, outside of MLS

Rumor mill is that he's already been offered a HGP multiple times but wanted to play for Porter. This is all internet hersay though.

As sad as it is to say, I can't imagine more than 3 or 4 of this years starters will be back next year. Quinn and Derschang are not attached to any MLS teams so aren't eligible for HGP. They also can't transfer as they already used their one. Meves, Barson, Caldwell and Schmitt are seniors, Trapp, Serna, Gallego, and Yedlin are HGP's. No inside info, but I would imagine CP leaving will move teams timetables forward.

If your analysis is accurate, the entire squad will be gutted, especially if the underclassmen HGPs leave.

That would de-emphasize the continuity argument for hiring Jared Embick.

Not sure how to feel about that.

Want it to be clear that in no way shape or form would I consider any of this as 100% going to happen (except seniors graduating, of course). Pure conjecture on my part.

By my count, 4 graduating and 6 are possibly going pro. I'm not sure if some of the 6 are ready yet. I would hate to see these players transfer to another college. We still have a very good team with the remaining players.

I agree with your conjecture. The only way I see some of this being prevented is if the assistant coaches are given an interim year to show that they can keep Caleb's system going. Conjecture on my part that players who came to Akron for Caleb's system are not going to stick around and buy into a new system.

It's not even just the system, it's Caleb himself. Even if the coaching staff can somehow magically guarantee there will be no change in the system or tactics or quality of the program, they still can't promise players to come play for a guy who is an insider with US Soccer. Even before the U-23 gig, Porter worked with the U-18s.

Can someone explain how the Home Grown Player rule works? I'm assuming that the MSL "home team" has first dibs on their services (and they aren't MLS Superdraft eligible?) -- but can the player turn the home team down for another "free agent" contract? My vague belief is that there are very few current MLS players contracted under this rule.

Well, back to the nominal topic.

Dillon Serna will not be successful in the MLS if he plays like he did tonight against St. John.

He errantly passed the ball at least 10 times.

He needs another year @ Akron.
