WTF!?!?!?

OK, benefit of the doubt.

Still, our season is wrecked. Not to mention the University's reputation.

If he is innocent, and I hope he is, we will find out with one short sentence on the last page of the Beacon Journal sport section on a Wednesday.

Yes, the season is ruined, his scholarship is gone along with his college degree.

"Alex Abreu, 21, was arrested for trafficking in marijuana and possession of marijuana at a resident on East Dartmore Street.

Akron police said a drug sniffing dog detected the smell of marijuana at a delivery terminal and an undercover officer made the delivery. Once Abreu accepted the package, he was arrested.

No observations, no sale. Just acceptance of a package.

Do not be shocked when he walks. It may be probable cause for an arrest, it is far far from what is needed for a conviction.

Unless they can tie him to the sender, he takes the stand and says:

"I received the box and got arrested. I had no idea what was in it."

Not gulity

Is that really the full extent of what is known? No mention of whether he lives there alone or that the package was explicitly addressed to him?

If that's the case I'm just really really annoyed at the timing. His roommate couldn't have just ordered it a month later? Ugh.

Dartmore is over by Firestone Stadium. That's a fairly long way from campus.

Please folks, let’s not cause the university further embarrassment by the way we handle ourselves in these forums.

This is shocking news, but very serious charges. To dismiss them as a setup, while possible, is a stretch that only makes us looks like desperately naïve fans. Explaining that he might get off on the charges, while legally relevant, makes it looks like we are fanatics that want him to get off. Wishing ill will on him because he hurt our feelings and let our kids down is unnecessarily vindictive.

Our team’s season has come crashing down. As fans who care about the university it hurts. However, this team, this coaching staff, and these players now face a monumental challenge.

How are they going to rise and face this challenge? Like the team, we as fans need to deal with the new reality and move on.

Let’s rally behind the team rather than debating the guilt or innocence of a kid who was arrested on a charge that was surely taken very seriously by the Akron Police Department.

Sure we’re all in shock and want to talk through this news, but it will be quite an accomplishment if this team can win out. Let’s focus on that. That’s what the team deserves from us now.

What terrible news. Hopefully this gets straightened out and Alex can be back in time for the MAC Tournament. All that anyone can really do is to wait for more information to be released about the situation before jumping to hastily made conclusions. I really hope the team can overcome this adversity and keep playing at the highest level possible. And hopefully, whether innocent or guilty, Rico learns from whatever mistakes or decisions he may have made that led to the events that have transpired thus far. Sometimes its easy to get caught up in some really dumb stuff without realizing how severely it can impact the rest of your life. There are a lot of people in this world that will drag you all the way to the bottom if you let them.

A little perspective here for those of you holding out hope that Alex will somehow make it out of this and be back for the MAC tournament. Not happening. For comparison. Quincy Diggs was suspended for the entire season for pleading to a second degree misdemeanor, which is a heck of a lot less serious than a third degree felony. I will be absolutely shocked if Alex ever plays another minute for the Zips. Frankly, if the allegations are true, I don't want him back.

I hope to god that this doesn't extend further into the basketball program as some have speculated. If it is true I really hope this is an isolated incident of one player screwing up (big time). IF it does go further I honestly don't know how I could continue to support this team and this program. It would be a long time before that kind of disappointment would heal. I can all but guarantee you that Dambrot's career would be over with. No University would support a coach whose had multiple players running a drug ring right below his nose. Again, I hope it isn't true, but you just never know.

I honestly just don't know how to react right now. This isn't something you see every day. There is no playbook for how to react to something like this. We're going to learn a whole lot more about this in the next few days and weeks. I can only hope that something good comes out of it.

As far as the team goes, you can pretty well kiss this season goodbye, or at least what we were all hoping this season was going to be. Betancourt has made improvements, but he isn't ready to be the starting point man for a team with sweet-16 aspirations or beyond the way Alex was. We have nobody else on this squad who is a true point. Most likely we go PG by committee with Melo, Walsh, Chauncey, Deji, Reggie and even Harney playing some minutes at the point. Our inside game becomes that much more important, but without the PG to get them the ball in the right spots it is going to be a lot tougher on those guys. You can't just lose your starting PG and expect to go on unscathed. Frankly, I would be surprised if we make it out of the semi-finals next Friday.

OK, so a package was delivered to someone else's residence who also gets arrested. This is sounding very strange.

Someone go to the arraignment part tomorrow and tell us what the Prosecutor has to say.

I agree. If yo go off the WKYC report vs. the Beacon, something does not add up.

Chill man, Diggs didn't plead to anything. Was never charged in the "court of law". The bogus "school" court at school kicked him out. But that's a whole other story i have too much info on, and would probably get deleted from this blog anyway.

And nothing against you, but this REALLY pisses me off. You dont know how other players are going to step up. Hell, neither do I. But we can still support them! If you dont have any faith, please dont come to the game. This team is deep.

Might want to check the Akron Municipal Court records.

Like it or not, this is not the forum for declaring the guilt or innocence of a currently charged UA athlete. This is unfortunately pertinent to our Zips and their upcoming efforts to complete the MAC Championship sweep.

If you want to discuss the impact of these events on the Zips MBB team and the next few games, have at it.

This whole situation sucks .. we get that. But save any attacks and judgments for another time and place. This is a sports forum.

For my money, I think we'll witness the best example yet of how KD's system built around teamwork and the development of depth.

I keep them on: B) B) B) B)

Go Zips!
