Who could we be playing?

Conventional wisdom seems to have the Zips being a 12 or 13 seed when the brackets are revealed for this year's NCAA tournament. That got me looking around at the various projections and seeing what teams are being most projected as 4 and 5 seeds. I have come up with 13 teams that seem to be in the range of being opponents for Akron. This, of course, is all conjecture and the committee could pull some major surprises but of the following who would you most want to see the Zips play and who would you want to see them play the least?

Wisconsin, Syracuse, Kansas State, UNLV, St. Louis, Marquette, Arizona, Notre Dame, Pitt, Michigan, UCLA, Butler, and Michigan State.

The two teams that scare me the most there are St. Louis and Michigan. The Billikens are really, really good but don't have the name recognition for us to "shock the world" with a win. The Wolverines not only would be determined to not be "one and done" like they were last year but knowing that they were knocked out by a MAC school I believe they'd play it as sort of a revenge game.

I'd love a shot at UCLA, especially in a 5 vs. 12 setup where the Bruins would not be geographically protected.

From your list, I like Pitt. They always show up big in the Tourney. :D

That would be an interesting game for Zeke in particular given where he is from. A win over them could certainly be yet another boost in regional recruiting as well. If we played them though I'd want it to be in a place like Salt Lake, Austin, or San Jose to be sure that more fans in the arena would be pulling for the Zips and the upset.

Don't want to see:

Syracuse (zones have given us fits at times this year)

UNLV (don't want to face anything resembling a pressure defense without Abreu)

Wouldn't mind seeing:

Wisconsin (I think we can beat them at their slow-down grind it out game)

Notre Dame (revenge game for two years ago)

Butler (chance to take on one of the goliaths of the mid-majors)

Would love to see:

Arizona or UCLA (the PAC12 isn't a very good conference, both teams have looked over-rated to me)

Pitt (history of choke jobs in the big dance, Big East isn't as good this year as in past years)

Marquette (another Big East team that is going to get a higher seed than they really deserve)

Everyone else I'm luke warm about

That team is flat, out scary good. They have been totally underrated all year. I don't know who I want to play. But I know who I don't. And that's SLU. If we play them, we lose. I'm not afraid to admit it.

I actually hope we avoid playing a mid-major. I feel teams like Gonzaga, VCU, and STL are very strong this year. Bigger schools may overlook the Zips, but Mids have played teams like Akron all year. As far as big schools, I hope we avoid Michigan and Syracuse. Syracuse just looked scary good during the BE tournament and the OhioU connection with Michigan. Just don't see them getting knocked out by MAC teams two seasons in a row.

The A-10 isn't a mid major conference so vcu and St. Louis aren't mid majors. Gonzaga may be technically a mid major but on the court they are not.

I agree totally. I would like to avoid SLU.

VCU?!?!?!

I actually didn't put them in just because I thought the NCAA would take into consideration that Shaka was one of our supporters between the Abreu thing and Cleveland and the publicity that got. I thought for that reason they would treat it almost as if VCU was a team we had already played this season. Obviously I was wrong.
