Dave in Green
Note that some of the NJCAA stats are highly suspect. For example, they show Nyles averaging only 5 minutes of PT per game. They also show him committing only 4 personal fouls all season.

Dave in Green
His limited playing time obviously helped him hold down his fouls. Right. It also results in him being shown as scoring 124.8 points per 40 minutes. That would really mess up Coach Dambrot's balanced scoring philosophy. Zipmeister
Right. It also results in him being shown as scoring 124.8 points per 40 minutes. That would really mess up Coach Dambrot's balanced scoring philosophy. Not if the other guys pick up the pace. A lot of people seem to enjoy a fast-paced game; 600 points a game should be highly attractive to them.
GoZips
Now that the Zips have all the pieces folks can start figuring out their line ups. Akron returns three starters from this past season. Demetrius Treadwell at power forward; Nicholas Harney at small forward; Carmelo Betancourt at point guard comprise the returning starters. In all likelihood incoming JUCO junior Nyles Evans will command the point reverting Melo to back up status. The other positions are up to speculation. Almost forgot center Pat Forsythe. Could be a real battle between Pat and Isaiah for the post position. By all means factor in the return of Quincy Diggs. Diggs is considered one of the best players on the team. While he would be an incredible force as the "sixth man", that is not likely to happen. Jake Kretzer pretty much has a lock on the back up power forward. Reggie McAdams is versatile and can play both forwards and even play the point in some situations. btw, the same holds true for Nick Harney. Four talented high school players were added to the player list. Center/power forward Isaiah Johnson out of Cincinnati Walnut Hills will strongly compete for playing time. Youthful Kwan Cheatam at six-nine could play. Add in BJ Gladden a six-six guard/forward and athletic six-five guard/forward Aaron Jackson. Where do Blake Justice and Deji Ibitayo fit; if at all? Could they be caught in a numbers game? And who, if anyone gets red shirted?
legendofzippy
1350 is supposed to have Nyles on for an interview today around 5:15. So nice to have a sports show that focuses on local teams.

It appears he'll have that luxury again this season. So many of these guys can handle multiple positions. I'd say PG is the concern though. You'd expect Betancourt to be a little better and Nyles Evans is a great sign, but both still need to prove it. The nice thing with Alex is that he was a proven 3 point threat. Blue & Gold
1: Nyles........Melo 2: Q..............B.J. Gladden 3. Harney......McAdams 4. Tree..........Kretzer 5. Pat............Isaiah Redshirts: Kwan Cheatham & Aaron Jackson (Cheatham no doubt, as he'll still be just 17 when he steps on campus in the fall. IMO Aaron Jackson also has to mature - mentally; I saw him play a few times this year & he's awfully cocky -nothing really wrong with that- but he also seems to take a lot of plays off. KD's gonna have to go all Drill Sergeant on AJ this first year.) Best seats in the house: Blake Justice, Deji Ibitayo
Dave in Green
@Blue & Gold, keep in mind when you put Gladden at the 2 position that he was the leading rebounder on his HS team, and was rated by at least one ranking service as an "undersized power forward." Gladden's main shooting strength is taking the ball to the bucket rather than shooting from outside. So it may make more sense playing him at the 3 than the 2 to keep him closer to the basket. On the other hand, McAdams is more of a 3-point shooter than Gladden, so it may make more sense playing him at the 2 than the 3.

So aside from Tree and Pat, I'm not sure any players can really be assigned to a position on this team, which is awesome. Imagine if you're the other coach - how do you gameplan for a team with so many possible lineups?

GoZips
I, too, heard the radio interview of Nyles Evans. I was surprised that he played mostly the two guard. That is not happening at Akron. Nyles was recruited to bolster the point position. Big time programs do not run five-eleven two guards. Brian Walsh was the size of big time two guard; six-five. Nyles is not likely to see much if any time off the point. Akron needs a point guard who fills all the functions of playing the point. That is, bring the ball up court, distribute the ball, take selected shots, provide leadership, ball handle, be quick as a kat, etc. As a point guard Nyles Evans slides right into a starting role. At the two he has at least two decent players ahead of him on the depth chart. Nyles is a quality point guard and that is where he fits. ZachTheZip
While I believe that Evans will play at the point for the most part, it doesn't hurt that he provides additional depth at both guard positions. Depth at guard is never a bad thing.

He is a three and that's all he is. He better get a little more consistent with that corner jumper because that is his true value to the team , that and having a nose for the ball on the other end of the floor. As far as Evans goes, he does make us a little quicker in our backcourt which has been a serious weakness going back to the day Mr. Ced Middleton hung up the sneakers. There may be others that have slipped my mind but Ced and Hollingsworth were the only two really quick guys in the backcourt that we've had in 10 freaking years. Now I want to see a two guard that can run, shoot and defend as well. Ask Keith what our team could have done with VCU's guards last season. Their defensive presence alone would have been amazing. The Hip Zip
be quick as a kat, etc. ding, ding, ding we have a winner. And what do we have for him Johnny ?? At last, I have found somebody who gets it.
The Hip Zip
[quote name='Blue & Gold' date='Apr 18 2013, 08:02 AM' post='203447' Best seats in the house: Blake Justice, Deji Ibitayo I actually prefer to be about 5 or 6 rows up in the lower bowl. Better vision of the entire floor. Enough joking... I'm afraid that your assessment of Deji may well be correct. Remember last season, fairly early on, when Deji went for double digits and looked really good out there ? As I recall he had an amazing shot block as well when it seemed half his body was above the rim. I remember getting pretty excited and thought that this kid is starting to get it. Sadly, that was just about it, he just failed to move forward and become a consistent contributor in the Akron backcourt. The real shame of this, provided he doesn't significantly improve, is that he's truly an amazing athlete that has more possible potential than most we have seen Keith bring in. In Deji I think Keith recruited a great athlete that may become a solid player rather than a solid player who would become a great athlete. I just read that last sentence and it sounds kinda' stupid, just hope it makes some sense to somebody. Got the season ticket letter in todays mail. The smell of basketball is in the air, never really leaves our house. Have a great summer everybody, I'll likely return in October.

You can't teach that sort of athleticism, and you never know how he'll improve over the summer. Plus a good ball handler. I still see him being part of the rotation, but we'll see.
