Chad looked very good at RB, generating both support and attack from the flank. Do not be surprised if he retains that starting spot for quite some time. Zip_ME87
Homegrown defender Chad Barson keys Crew rally vs. Houston Dynamo I can't help but find this quote by Eric Gehrig insulting: "Maybe he's been watching Josh and it rubbed off on him," Crew center back Eric Gehrig said. "As a right back you’re taught to go forward and try to make a difference in the game. He picked a good spot to go forward." In his post-game interview in response to a question from Ashleigh Ignelzi, Chad said getting forward was something he did in college, as we all know. (Yeah, he learned it from some Josh [Williams] who played for Cleveland State.)

I assume he's referring to Crew training. Josh Williams is a fantastic player.

Josh Williams is a fantastic player. I may have stated that a little too harshly. Like anyone, I'm sure Chad is learning from his teammates, but getting forward is not something he just picked up in Columbus. I know you're a Crew fan, but I just can't get excited about their style of play. I also find Warzycha to be less than inspiring. I wish the Crew would find a more charismatic and driven coach, but I know that's easier said than done.

But I've also been a Crew fan before the days of Warzycha head coaching duties. At least they have Higuain, he's a fantastic player to watch, but seems to be so alone on the field to often. yazan07
The funny thing about Chad's comment about learning to get forward as an outside back in college is that as we know he played exclusively as a center back in college and really didn't get forward that much. He scored at least 1 goal and had a few assists at Akron. Also, in four years of games and practices, he would have seen the outside backs get forward enough to have picked up something from them and the coaches...as much (or more so) as learning from Josh Williams. Regardless of how much he got forward himself, he certainly learned it at Akron.

I think Chad Barson was referring to all the practices, drilling, and film sessions where defenders were repeatedly encouraged to get forward. That is an Akron philosophy. But you are right. At Akron, there are only three positions NOT expected to get forward; CB, CB, GK. (This did not sink in with Zarek Valentin.)

Zip_ME87
the notion that caleb porter invented the attacking fullback is at least as dumb as some dude assuming chad learned the position at crew Not sure whose comment you're suggesting implied that notion. I didn't read that into anyone's comments in this thread. Referring to something as "Akron philosophy" or that a player learned something from Akron coaches or Akron's style doesn't mean the style was invented in Akron. fknbuflobo
the notion that caleb porter invented the attacking fullback is at least as dumb as some dude assuming chad learned the position at crew The concept of Defenders getting forward is as old as the sport. A student of infantry tactics might say the concept is much older than that. It is fundamental football; numerically overload the opposition during transition. All teams teach that principle, but some sides fanatically emphasize it. CP Akron is the latter.

Zip_ME87
Either way, Barson could get his second consecutive start tonight against Philly. Josh Williams calf injury status for tonight is up in the air. Crew at Union - June 5, 2013 Player Spotlight Crew Homegrown Player Chad Barson made his debut in Robert Warzycha's starting lineup on Saturday against the Houston Dynamo. The rookie defender was instrumental in securing a point at home, drawing the foul that led to Federico Higuaín's equalizing penalty kick. Barson earned high praise from his teammates after the match for his performance. "If [barson] is frazzled, he really does a good job of containing it," goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum said. "I thought he was very poised and did a great job of both attacking, getting behind and serving the ball with defending as well." Added Dominic Oduro: "I thought he did very well, especially for his first game starting. He was really massive, he played with his heart and I thought he did great." With Josh Williams listed as questionable for Wednesday's match with calf inflammation, Barson could see his second career start come against the Union. Roogangs
wow! watched the game yesterday and columbus got thumped. on a positive note, Barson had another great game. he looked to be the only one actually defending and marking. got up a few times with good results (although getting up was limited because midfield was like swiss cheese). at half Barson was switched to left side from right. in the fist half the left back was getting abused (3 goals in like 10 mins). this is hoping Barson retains a starting position for the rest of the season, he certainly has left his play state his case

Wahl has been pretty consistent on the left all season. It will be interesting to see what changes Warzycha makes. The only change I prefer is to have Warzycha shipped out of town. Crew8
Does anyone else wonder how Josh Williams did not play for Zips? This article should help answer your question. Winding roads leads former Copley standout Josh Williams to MLS Three-sport player So when his sophomore year began, Williams became a three-sport standout for the Indians. A soccer midfielder, he was twice chosen All-Ohio and shared the school’s career scoring mark when he left. He played point guard in basketball and was a power-hitting shortstop in baseball, drawing interest from the University of Kentucky and West Virginia. He liked basketball and said it might have been his pick if he were taller than 6-foot-2. Baseball was too slow. So Williams elected to pursue soccer, but soon learned that college recruiters concentrated on club players. Steve Williams thought he had University of Akron soccer coach Ken Lolla interested, but Lolla left for Louisville. When UA coach Caleb Porter wanted to see Williams play, it was basketball season.
