2013 Zips Tailgate Talk

Media days are here. That means the countdown to the 2013 season is in the stretch run. The first tailgate will be here before you know it.

I want to know if people want to compile the beer list again. I think it is a lot of fun, but don't want to push the issue if others have grown tired of it.

We did a really crummy job of documenting all the delicious beers we enjoyed drinking last year. (We were having too much fun) If the usual list of suspects wants to do this again, I will be happy to do all of the list compiling. So, chime in here Lot 9. Let me know what you think. I would also like to encourage those who have not yet participated in the list to add their 2¢.

If the survey says proceed, I will try to see if I can generate any interest with other MAC tailgaters to accept a "Tailgating Beers Challenge".

OK. I don't think any other MAC boards have bought into the "Tailgating Beer Challenge", so we are on our own for our own amusement. Tomorrow is the first chance to get the list started and I know there are some of our own in Orlando who will be enjoying some of the fine craft brews the region has to offer.

I fully expect to see some posts tomorrow detailing the beers they tried from Cigar City, Terrapin, Brick, Sweetwater...

Memo to Keener:

The drink on the left counts towards the beer tally. The drinks on the right do not.

I'm off the ledge now. It's just so disappointing to see all the pre-season hope get torn asunder before we even get to September. I guarantee the tailgating will deliver, though. Guaran-damn-tee.

I am bringing a wide selection of beers for Saturday and, by special request, I will be making pulled pork bacon cheeseburgers.

It would be great if some of you who were in Orlando would start out the beer list already!!!

Just got done unloading the car from yesterday. We are going to try an abbreviated set up at Ann Arbor and see if it works a little better for us. Adding television back into the mix made our day a little less enjoyable as we were trying to cook while on the phone to Dish Network technical support. We started cooking breakfast at quarter til 9, grilled peppers at noon, and never got to fixing the bacon pulled pork cheeseburgers or the potatoes & onions. :( Too much to do. Too many people to talk to. Too many trips walking across campus to the Roo Walk and other tailgating lots. So I think we are going to cut out cooking and just grab something from a restaurant when we get hungry. Going to try this strategy for the Michigan game & see how it works.

Now on to the beer. The following came from our cooler:

Sixpoint Sweet Action

Thirsty Dog Citra Dog

Troegs Nugget Nectar

Sweetwater Blue

Oskar Blues Ten Fidy

3 Floyds Gumballhead

3 Floyds Apocalypse Cow

Triton Sin Bin

Triton Deadeye Stout

Bell's Java Stout

Green Flash Double Stout

Tyranena Stone Tepee Pale Ale

Tyranena Rocky's Revenge Brown

Tyranena Bitter Woman IPA

Tyranena Headless Man Amber

Tyranena Chief Blackhawk Porter

Boulevard Pale Ale

Boulevard Bully! Porter

Boulevard Dark Truth Stout

Old Milwaukee Light

It was a great day for sharing! Dr. Z hooked me up with 3 Floyds Artic Panzer Wolf and Alpha King. I was able to sample some great Anderson Valley Summer Solstice Ale. Probably the best part was our nightcap when the 3 year old bottle of Mad Elf was finally opened to celebrate the victory! It tasted sweet.

Thanks to all the tailgaters that make going to the games so much fun. We have to make sure we find each other next Saturday!

Are we counting beers we drank during the game, or AT the game tailgating?

I thought this was a TAILGATING list?

I have thought about this a lot and you are right. Only post beers that you drank while at the tailgate. The only exception to this rule would be a side excursion to a local bar for some goodies as part of the pre/post game celebration. (I am mostly thinking this for away games. I think a stop at Bells in Kalamazoo or Jackie O's in Athens, etc. should count if you are there tailgating for the Zips game)

Thoughts?

Zips tailgaters, how do these quotes from the JMU message board make you feel?

At barley house now. This town is deadddsss

Abort mission at Barley House. Place is beat.

Just saw the Akron tailgating scene...pathetic.

Be thankful that you dont live in Akron. At a bar literally 100 yards across from the stadium and there were about 10 people before kickoff. No game day experience. Even if we are in the lowly CAA our game day experience and fan base is far above what Akron could dream of. Not sure how the rest of the MAC compares.

Makes me feel sad because I know it's true. We have such a long way to go. Our small tailgating group is full of great people, we just need a couple thousand more.

I saw these quotes and they struck me the same way, K92. I think we both know there is only one thing that will grow the game day experience – winning. We’ve hashed and rehashed the whole FBS/1-A vs. FCS/1-AA vs. something in between debate, so I really don’t think we need to go over that again. BUT, a big reason JMU has established a decent following isn’t too hard to decipher.

Having said all of that, the claims of a 1000 or 3000 or 5000 strong “Purple Wave” taking over Akron were obviously just a little off. I’m guessing, maybe 300 to 350 JMU fans were in attendance? Not bad, and actually pretty close to what the typical MAC foe brings, but it certainly didn’t live up to the hype.

Sounds good to me. Next step would be, not counting the likes of bud, bud light, miller, miller light etc...

My JMU list:

Three Floyd's Gumballhead (unique for a wheat) Thanks K92

Mönchshof Kellerbier

Ayinger Bräu Weisse

Maudite (My first - & recommended)

Sam Adams Imperial Stout (pass)

Left Handed Polestar Pilsner

Jacko Travler Shandy (unique for a pumpkin)
