GoZips Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 Tom Gaffeny, Zips men's basketball writer for the Akron Beacon Journal reportsthat Jeffery Boals is Shaka Smart's replacement.Boals was an assistant coach at Robert Morris College. Robert Morris, like Akron, isan up and coming Division One program. Quote
Sloopy Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 So the best we can do is go after an assistant at a school that is a lesser program than MAC level? Smart came from Clemson and Dayton, now we replace him with a Robert Morris staffer. This staff has has definite lack of curb appeal - all D3 and lower level DI guys. Would it hurt to bring in a name assistant - former player from a Big 10 school - somebody to really boost our recruiting to the next level. When replacing staff you need to look to improve, not stay status quo. In this case Dambrot lost ground and that is not a good sign. Quote
Hilltopper Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 So the only important qualification to be an assistant coach is to come from a "Big program". Give KD a break and let things play out before rushing to judgement. Quote
hiphop10 Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 Jeff was busting his a$$ at Pitt this weekend, I saw him at all 4 venues. Other guys pulled up chairs along the baseline of the Peterson Center and never got off their butts content to bs w/their buddies. The best mid-major recruiters in the midwest are not "names"...they're guys who fit into one mold -- they're honest and they work hard. Your staff has two of the best right now and their both "D-2" guys.Jeff seems likely to be the same way. And fyi, before Dayton and Clemson, Shaka was a d-3 player and a d-2 assistant. You had 4 players that wanted the 1 scholarship you guys had to give this spring -- I think the staff will be fine. Programs, winning and the players sell a recruit more than anything else. Quote
zip37 Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 Sloopy-- what makes a good asst college basketball coach in your not so humble opinion? Your pre judging of Jeff is beyond the bounds-- in my not so humble opinion. With ball ammunition lock and load. :macc: Quote
