ZachTheZip
The Thundering Herd are coming to town on Tuesday to play the Zips in an exhibition match. It will be nice to see the Zips play somebody other than themselves. It will also be interesting to see who starts and who finishes for the Zips. The battle for GK is still ongoing, and i bet we'll see a different keeper in the first and second halves. Move-in week will be going on, and I expect to see a lot of new students checking out what all the fuss is about.

Fernando Pena played for the US National Team at the U-17 World Cup, was produced by an MLS Academy, and was the best GK in his senior class. I would be shocked if his status as our starting goalkeeper was anything less than set in stone.

Is Jake Fenlason really good enough to beat Fernando Pina?
GoZips
I was tempted to bark about no one mentioning what time the Marshal exhibition match is. Then, I went to GoZips. com and discovered that the start time is not readily appearant. Finally, digging through the schedule I discovered that the start time is 7:00 PM. And these bunnies (as in dumb) wonder why interest is flagging. Even when you are on top you must continually crow about your program. Sigh. p.s. I am sure they will post the pre-game story complete with the start time around four PM on game day.

There have already been 2 games for which the start times have changed...San Diego State and BGSU (the date of which also moved). The official game days and start times are on GoZips.com as they have always been (GoZips.com, click schedules, then select Mens Soccer). It doesn't matter if anyone posts the dates and start times here...the official, up-to-date information is on the official site.

fknbuflobo
***********Brenes*********** Stevenson*************Portillos Quinn******************Najem ***********Souto************ Derschang*********Abdul-Salaam *****Souders****Gallego******* ************Pina************* I almost exactly predicted the starting lineup. The one very big exception was Adam Najem. I still think Matt Foldesy will contribute significantly this season. Whole team looked comfortable and sharp. Upon loss of possession, whole team swarmed and pressed for ~10 seconds to regain possession. Possession not won within 10 seconds, team retreated to defensive shape. This is the same as it has been for last decade. *Aodhan Quinn is poised for a banner season. *Abdul-Salaam got forward early and often. Team was obviously looking for him every opportunity. *Adam Najem is a first class tactican. Last night, he knew where everyone on the pitch was at any given moment. *Victor Souto ruled the middle circle. It is going to be fun watching him win possession this season. *Jared Embick does not yell nearly as much as Caleb Porter.
Crew8
Was not able to make it out last night but seen on twitter Fives, Ruhaak, Seremba, Cross, Gravatt, Caso, Foldesy and Grant received some time in the second half. How did they look? Especially the new recruits. Curious what the new kids might bring to the team maybe later in the season.

How did they look? Especially the new recruits. Curious what the new kids might bring to the team maybe later in the season. I too was excited to see the new guys. The "B" team trickled in during the second half. Notable were the players that never left the match: Pina, Souto, Najem. (Somebody correct me on this point if necessary.) Derschang moved up to Forward when Caso came on at LB, and played nearly full 90. I predict the first three players off the bench (in order) will be Matt Foldesy, Clint Caso, and Ismail Seremba. The substitute player that really caught my eye was Louis Cross. He was very confident and economical at CB. He has excellent size and speed. We have no need for a another CB in the first 11, and that is not a position that subs out much. But Cross can step in as needed. So, while Louis Cross is unlikely to supplant Gallego or even Souders, he probably already has the edge on Brad Ruhaak. While discussing Copley products, it pains me to write that Riley Grant did not show well. He is obviously big and fast, but his touch was leaden. Worse yet, he appeared directionless, prematurely aborting runs, making errant passes. He had no linkage and flow to his game. I hope to see him more comfortable and productive as the season unfolds. Derschang moved up to Forward when Caso came on at LB, and played nearly full 90. Najem subbed off after his second goal. I was really, really impressed by both he and Souto. Both of them were great, with Najem turning in a man of the match performance. He had two goals, an assist and I'm not 100% positive, but I think he set up the first goal with a perfect through ball to Saad who assisted Quinn from the touchline. The way the two freshmen combined in the midfield would have made you think they've played together for years.
