UAZipster0305
This looks like a wide open year, but the Zips have slipped from 7th to 15th in the latest NSCAA poll. And rightfully so. Unlike Zips teams of the past decade, this one lacks a go-to goal scorer. Zakuakni, Bunbury, Nagbe, and Mattocks...it's not so much disappointing that we don't have a forward to continue this lineage as it is amazing that Porter was able to always have another player waiting in the queue. Brenes is capable of scoring, but I do not think he is a go-to type guy. Will someone step up or will a current bench player emerge? I honestly don't know. This will be the difference between the Zips just making the NCAA Tournament vs. deeply advancing. Without a scorer, the defense has to be tight. That hasn't been the case thus far this year. Case in point was the VCU game...one chance, one goal, one loss. I expect the defense to progressively gel throughout the rest of the season. ZachTheZip
I agree. This team has two major weaknesses: a go-to scorer, and confidence at the GK position. Pina just needs to believe in himself. He hesitates and is tentative, and it has cost him a few goals. Maybe he'll grow out of it as he plays more games. Don't forget that he's a freshman trying to fill some pretty big shoes. As for a go-to scorer, that will come in time, and I think we'll see one emerge very soon. CALzip88
I wounder if the topic needs to be brought up. Maybe with the lack of a bonafide goal scorer... And a defense that needs time to improve... is there a better option then Pina at GK? I understand that none of the GK on the roster have much experience but what if there is a better shot stopper on the bench? I mean trimmy10 said it best "one chance, one goal, one loss." Pina might be great with his feet but if he is 2nd best with his hands... we might need the hands more then a distributor at the moment. If we only give up 2 shots on goal each game and one goes in and we are taking 20 shots a game and only scoring once, it makes you wonder. What if we give up a little with distribution and gain a GK with better shot stopping skills. This might allow the team to relax and get few wins and build confidence. The biggest take away from this weekend was we aren't going to blow teams out of the water with goals this year. We can possess like the old Akron but we can't score. And, in soccer the long the game goes tied the more the other team thinks they have a shot.
TennZip
looks Like Bowling Green, saturday's opponent....is better than normal this year... Michigan State def. BG 1-0 today...each team had 8 shots on goal
Z.I.P.
Same score as our game, but we had a truckload more shots. Did someone say we need a finisher? Hope Reinaldo stays healthy!
Dave in Green
As much as the early results hurt, in the overall scheme of things I'd rather see the Zips start the season a little sluggishly and finish strong than vice versa. Hopefully we'll see signs of improvement pretty quickly as the new head coach and new players become more accustomed to their new roles together.
