Blue & Gold Posted October 4, 2013 Report Posted October 4, 2013 George Thomas courtesy of the ABJ. In the article Coach Bowden states he is/was expecting the QB to contribute to the running game. This runs contrary to his previously stated ideal of not having the QB run, no? Also, GT gives an intriguing suggestion: in goal line situations, put Cody Grice @ RB. Cody was an RB in high school. It could be our own version of The Refrigerator (I'm dating myself). Quote
Dr Z Posted October 4, 2013 Report Posted October 4, 2013 In the article Coach Bowden states he is/was expecting the QB to contribute to the running game. This runs contrary to his previously stated ideal of not having the QB run, no?When coach arrived at Akron, he stated that he didn't like a QB to run the ball because the QB was in charge of getting the play to his teammates at the line, and he couldn't do that under a pile of defenders. He has since softened on that stance. There are now a few quotes of him supporting that the QB should run when given the opportunity. IMO on the goal line, you don't always need a big full back type to pound the ball in. Sometimes you just need a guy that runs low. I think George is suggesting Grice run the ball at the goal line. I would suggest he lead blocks for Hundley. Quote

That might be a start. 2) Whether or not Bowden actually said he did not want his QB's to run,and this has been discussed on this site previously,in the MAC and in this offense having a QB who is mobile enough to make defenses pay attention to the possibility of an ocassional 'run' certainly helps the rest of the offense. Somebody said it before, the QB has to be able to run/move 'effectively' enough to present a threat. That includes at the goal line as well as the middle of the field. Pohl hasn't been really a significant threat even before he got dinged. 3) Bowden has been trying to pass in goal situations. That might because he doesn't trust the run game. Problem is that end zone gets real crowded, as we have seen. Whether the lack of an effective ground game is a play calling problem,a personnel problem,an O line problem or a combination, it seems time to make some serious adjustments. Quote
