Columbus Crew in Akron

Recommended Posts

I don't know if anyone saw this earlier today but US Soccer announced the fourth round pairings for the US Open cup (MLS teams enter in the 4th round) and the Crew will be playing the winner of the Dayton Dutch Lions/Indy Eleven third round match-up. The site? None other than First Energy Stadium in Akron. These Open cup games don't typically draw well so MLS teams often play in venues other than their own stadiums, as a way to try to expand their fanbase. The game will be play sometime between June 10-18, with more details to be announced after the third round game on May 28. Should be a fun time, having a MLS team playing on campus!

The date for this is June 17th at 7:30...which is a Tuesday. Better than nothing I guess. Who will be joining me at this game? Lot 9 tailgate? Hoping some fans from Columbus will make the trip so we can try to put on a good show for them. I think this game will be especially cool for Chad and Wil.

I was really hoping this match would take place before I leave for the southern hemisphere. I would enjoy seeing a fantastic turnout at First Energy. I'll be there in spirit from the beaches of Brazil.

Say "hi" to Bisbee and the Mrs. while you're there. They are beyond excited for the trip, and I'm certain they'd be pleased to see someone from Akron there.

It will be incredible to run into Bisbee and the Mrs. again in of all places, Brazil. I know of 2 others with myself making the trip. Tell Bisbee to be on the lookout for some Akron folks.

Check out the NPSL Radio Show today 530-7pm on nostaticradio.com. I will be interviewing Head Coach Jared Embick at the top of the show to discuss some Akron soccer and the upcoming US Open Cup between Crew and Indy Eleven.

Article from ISN with a quote from Chad Barson - The Crew are Coming to Akron

“At Akron, the fans are great. It’s electric; it’s a very live atmosphere. Obviously I’m very excited; Akron is very near and dear to me. I played there for four years. It’s one of the best fields around, so we’ll definitely be able to play our style of soccer. To be able to go up there, see old friends and play in front of the community again will be great.”

Disappointning that more NE Ohioans and Zips alumni and fans didn't take advantage of the opportunity to see the Crew locally. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

It's also too bad that the moron media in Cleveland didn't even seem to take notice of this game, before or after, to my knowledge. They only seem to care about dissing Johnny Manziel and childishly rejoicing about the Heat losing to the Spurs. Why would you want to have any connection to an event that includes professional soccer players from Ohio at a time when the World Cup is happening?! I think I've finally realized that Cleveland really doesn't deserve a winning sports franchise. They seem more interested in creating dirt than creating a positive outlook.

It was a wonderful night to watch football. However, it was too sultry to play without losing one's cool, as exhibited by both sides. They were kicking, shoving and butting the whole game. Every player seemed in ill temper from the very jump. Tackles were often late and brutal. I hope no one sustained lingering injury. But I guarantee many were walking gingerly this following morning.

Particularly impressive was the charter bus full of Indy Eleven faithful who made the five hour transit to Akron. They were replete with banners, scarves and jerseys. (They have existed for little over a year.) They were generous with stories and brew before the match. Once things started, they were in full voice throughout the night.

Though we are more closely aligned with Columbus Crew, both geographically and experientially, Zips Nation salutes the Indy Eleven and their supporters.

Our game is evidently alive and well in America’s heartland.

I hope this isn't something you just noticed :D

It's pathetic, indeed.

The main grandstand looked to be around 97% full. It looked like a normal Zips game minus the students. 1,913 is just as good as Columbus would have done at Crew Stadium considering it is an Open Cup game.

Indy Eleven fans are doing a great job supporting their team in their first year of the NASL.

Makes you wish Akron had a summer team to watch. If we could average 1,000 per game, we could support a team. The Dayton Dutch Lion only average around 500. Akron is a bigger city and has a better resume, thanks to Zips soccer, for a USL team.

Regarding the Cleveland media, the only time they report something from Akron is when it is negative about our city.
