K92
Dear Abby,Still trying to get over the trauma of my New Year's Day experience. The holidays should be a time of joy spent with family and friends but I am feeling left out. I got a chance to spend some time with my Uncle (BGSU grad), his son/my cousin (Akron grad), his wife (CMU grad) and my brother-in-law (Akron grad) which should have been a good time but I was the infidel elephant in the room not participating in their Big Ten lovefest while the MSU/Baylor game was on. I even tried to engage my cousin's wife in conversation about the Bahamas Bowl but she looked at me like I was speaking Martian. Am I the only MAC fan who feels this isolated from not only the mainstream but my own family? What should I do, Abby?Signed,Alone in Ashland

Dave in Green
Dear Alone in Ashland,The world can be a harsh place for minorities. My suggestion for you is to stop hanging out with elitists, even if they're from your own family. Spend all your time with like-minded people, even if it results in a small circle of friends. If none live nearby, try setting up a computer in your basement and spend most of your time on a forum with like-minded people. Shutting out the real world is a valid strategy for those who become emotionally distraught over a feeling of not fitting in. By the way, what's a "MAC?"Signed,Abby Normal
Valpo Zip
I feel with you Alone in Ashland. My family is very similar to yours. Family members who went to Akron and live in Akron only hear about the zips when I come to town and offer them free tickets to join me for a game. BTW, they automatically decline if OSU is playing in the same day (even if at different times).Even worse, I work with a bunch of big ten + ND alums. During lunches and/or water cooler conversations, they each gloat about their teams going to bowls and being ranked and making runs in the NCAA tourney. They look at me for contributions and the only things I can say are: "We're getting better in football" and "We have a young basketball team... for the 7th year in a row". Big Zip
Wondering if anyone else has the problem I'm anticipating for Monday. I'm guessing my daughter's school is going to let the kids dress down on Monday and where Ohio State gear. My daughter is in fourth grade and doesn't have any Ohio State gear. I have no intention of buying her any Ohio State gear. The interesting thing about this is my daughter's favorite softball player played at Oregon so she does have Oregon gear, t-shirt, sweatshirt, headband, duck call, pencils etc. (I have a friend who works at Nike and sends her stuff from time to time.) She has already told me she's not going to wear her Oregon gear because of the crap she is going get from the other kids who unfortunately have "Lemming" parents. I'm guessing I'll tell her to wear her Akron gear and I think everything will be fine because it is College gear but this stuff drives me nuts.I consider myself fortunate growing up. My dad went to WVU and CSU and my mom didn't go to college. My father never pushed his colleges on me and when I was growing up I rooted for Georgia because I loved watching Herschel Walker and my dad traveled a lot to Atlanta. I had a Georgia poster on my wall and Georgia gear. My daughter can root for whoever she wants. She has Akron gear but that is because she asks for it when we go to games....she wants her own gear. At least I can say I root for my alma mater....which is more than most OSU fans can say.End of rant...thanks for listening it was cathartic. Blue & Gold
Thought this was interesting. I coach a 4-5th grade basketball team. We have 10 kids on the team. At Monday's practice, during the mid-practice huddle, talk turned to the national championship game. 4 of the kids are sports-oblivious & probably don't even know what a football is, let alone who's playing in the game. However, of the remaining 6, 4 of the kids were pulling for Oregon over Columbus. I was pleasantly surprised.
Big Zip
Blue & Gold I know people on this board really hate the uniform roulette that is happening at the college level but I have to believe a lot of the Oregon love comes from their cool uniforms. I know there was a lot of discussion yesterday when they unveiled their Championship game uniforms and they were all white/silver....no green/yellow.
johnnyzip84
Dear AiA,Perhaps you can take some solace in the words of Robert Frost:The Road Not TakenTwo roads diverged in a yellow wood,And sorry I could not travel bothAnd be one traveler, long I stoodAnd looked down one as far as I couldTo where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fairAnd having perhaps the better claim,Because it was grassy and wanted wear;Though as for that the passing thereHad worn them really about the same,And both that morning equally layIn leaves no step had trodden black.Oh, I kept the first for another day!Yet knowing how way leads on to way,I doubted if I should ever come back.I shall be telling this with a sighSomewhere ages and ages hence:Two roads diverged in a wood, and I —I took the one less traveled by,And that has made all the difference.
