DeAndre Yedlin Embraces the Grind: How the defender is overcoming his own hype

Very good article and analysis.

Edit: "Own hype" is a Bullsh!t term. Hype was media-generated as it usually is. DeAndre has always been "grounded". I would not call his quick rise from HG signing to Sounders starter to EPL hype. "Raw" standout performance was responsible for that. Now experience/maturation is improving that. The hair has always been style, never flash. Those who see it otherwise don't know him. I remember when we first saw it at Akron and Bisbee asked us on this forum what he had done because he hadn't seen it. ... fun

I hope that the refs learn from this and do more to protect Darlington, the most fouled player in MLS.   He really gets beat up on a consistent basis.

He always has, even in high school at St. Edward's.

Remember the 2010 regular season match, Zips hosting Michigan Wolverines?  This was the match where Sarkodie scored a hat trick; I think the final score was 7-1.

Nagbe was savagely fouled, resulting in a straight red for the perpetrator.  I know there exists video on this because I have seen it.  It even sounds bad.

DarNag has always frustrated the opposition because he is so difficult to dispossess.  Ball sticks to him.

As statements go, Akron made a loud one Tuesday night.

A 7-1 win over Big 10 opponent Michigan just happened to on a day when the Zips’ program was hosting Rob on the Road, as head coach Caleb Porter showed me all around the school, soccer facilities and gave us unprecedented access to the team’s activities before, during and after the match.

We’ve got tons of video to show for it, but you just have to take your hat off to Porter for his work in building such a top-rate program and for selling it so well. He has recruited very well over the past few years and this is why the Zips are once again doing so well – their players are that good.

{mosvideo:300}Tuesday they were in rare form, holding the ball for long stretches and attacking in numbers early and often. Right back Kofi Sarkodie had a monster game, scoring a hat trick that began with a 10th minute strike. Darren Mattocks, Anthony Ampaipitakwong, Darlington Nagbe and Thomas Schmitt added a single tally each. Michigan had two players sent off in the final 20 minutes, after the score was already 4-1.

Akron improves to 12-0-1 while Michigan, which got a goal from Soony Saad on a 1st half free kick, falls to 8-4-3.

So check out the video taken today. We’ve got a look at the Akron facilities, some insight from the crazies known as AK Rowdies, a little flavor from the match including a vicious red card, and some post-match comments.

Tomorrow I’ll be heading east. Check  the web site again to find out how far.

Here's a video from that match:

Garber, at least, seems to have some common sense.

Bruce Arena definitely raised some blood pressure with his comments.  Best wishes, Darlington, for a fast recovery from this vicious foul.

3 matches is insufficient.

Kofi Sarkodie played 90 minutes for San Jose last night.  Zarek played all 90 for Portland and Darren Mattocks played 63 minutes.  Darren exited the game after taking a shoulder to the head.

Looking forward to watching Scott Caldwell on ESPN this afternoon at 2:30 central time.  Go, Zips

Thanks for the heads up, but let's not forget Teal Bunbury for the NE Revs as well.

Timbers selected as Grand Marshal for Portland Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade

..."We want to see Portland Timbers fans turn out for the Spirit Mountain Casino Grand Floral Parade and ‘excessively celebrate’ their 2015 MLS Cup championship team," said Marilyn Clint, (AKA Parade Queen) chief operating officer, Portland Rose Festival Foundation.

The best Homegrowns MLS ever signed Written by Will Parchman

...Top 5 All Time...

4. Wil Trapp, Columbus Crew

I’ll fight push-back on this pick, because I genuinely think Trapp is the best defensive midfielder the Homegrown initiative has ever produced. Trapp is not the Makelele Role midfielder who sits and destroys, which I think is primarily why he’s such an interesting case. In the U.S., we’re plenty used to that figure, but we’ve done a more incomplete job of pushing along Pirlo types who prefer to sit deeper and spread the ball.

That’s where Michael Bradley used to be king, before Vanney and Klinsmann had him running all over creation. Thankfully, Gregg Berhalter has allowed Trapp – when he’s healthy – to sit deep and build. Thanks to Opta, we know definitively that Trapp is among the most efficient midfielders in the league. Thanks to our eyeballs, we know he’s one of the best, too.

3. DeAndre Yedlin, Seattle Sounders

Yedlin’s struggles to find consistent playing time in England and his continual deployment as a right midfielder in Jurgen Klinsmann’s system has perhaps guided us to forget how good Yedlin can be when, 1.) he’s in a holistic system that’s engineered at least in part around his overlapping, 2.) he’s actually played at right back. The first is important because teams need to plan around Yedlin’s blinking defensive form. The second is important because he is, in fact, a right back.

This is what Yedlin’s capable of when he’s hit his stride. That is Eden Hazard.

Yedlin might already be robbed of his true fullbacking potential, because he can’t seem to find consistent minutes there since leaving Seattle after the 2014 season. But don’t let that cloud how good Yedlin’s been – and how good he could still be. ...

So happy for DeAndre. Great experience working to avoid relegation, I'm certain. The atmosphere at the Stadium of Light today had to be beyond fun.
