Once every four years a D-1 basketball team may play a few games overseas.

This is the year the Zips are eligible. The Zips will play in the Bahamas August 12-20.

The hotel of choice is the famous Atlantis you see advertised on TV.

Details to follow.

Three Games Starting Friday -- EA of PD

(KD) "We're going to be a bit different this year, particularly off the bench." The difference is quickly noticeable as the Zips will be much more athletic. Newcomers Craig Eubanks (Missouri West Plains Junior College), Michael Hughes (Liberty, Mo.), Tavian Dunn-Martin (Huntington, W.Va.), Daniel Utomi (Houston, Texas) will join sophomore Jimond Ivey in an effort to replace departed sharp-shooting wings Jake Kretzer and Reggie McAdams, along with center Pat Forsythe. Ivey played sparingly last season while Utomi and Eubanks practiced as redshirts. Their athleticism and defensive ability will be key to making Akron better. "The more they can push for playing time, the better we're going to be,'' Dambrot said. "We'll play the young guys a lot (in the Bahamas) to get them ready.

I saw the summary on gozips ... Did I miss the box score or is that not on there?

I have not seen a game summary either. From observation I would say the game plan was developing

perimeter shooting. The Knights had a thin bench and were badly over matched. Note, to, that the

game was played with a 24 second shot clock. The Zips used a 24 second shot clock in most of their

ten practices.

Daniel Utomi is the likely the starting small forward. Danny is an excellent outside shooter who possess

the body of a power forward and can play the four spot. The Zips have a lot of depth and need  to

find minutes for an entire gaggle of three/four position players.

Emmanuel Olojakpoke  has been an outstanding rim protector and put back artist throughout the

practice period. Kwan Cheatham missed some practice time due to his brother's wedding. KC

showed no ill effects in the game.

Mercifully Akron did little pounding the ball inside where Big Dog and Big Mike would have make

mince meat of the Knights. I wonder if CTG was depleted to the point that they could not give a

tough game. Should be more competitive Monday as the opponent has much more size.

Nice blog entry from the 3 true freshman concerning the Bahamas trip.

Apparently Tavian Dunn-Martin also had 8 assists to go along with his 13 points.  He's a natural scorer.  Constructive criticism: his shot looks to be a bit flat to me... but he's so quick he gets himself open for his shot almost whenever he wants to.

Big Mike is a physical specimen.  He can really get up & down the floor for 6'9" 260.  To me it looks like he's slimmed down a bit from the video & pictures I saw of him in high school.  When he first went into the game I initially thought it was Aaron Jackson (who didn't play; must be hurt?).  Constructive criticism: Big Mike's gotta work on his post moves a bit... but he's a true adonis.

This team is very deep with strikingly similar talent (except for Kwan; Kwan's size and skill set sticks out to me).  Intra-squad scrimmages would be absolute battles & fun to watch.  To me it looks as if the talent is spread so evenly that if you split the team and played 10 games, each squad would win 5.

I believe my starting five would be (one the left):

G - Robotham         G - Williams

G - Antino               G - Dunn-Martin

S - Utomi                S - Ivey

PF -Kwan                PF -Olojakpoke

C - Big Dog             C - Big Mike

6th - A. Jackson      6th - Eubanks

Is anyone else thinking that it's possible that the 3 guards will start (Josh, Antino, and Noah) along with Kwan and Big Dog?  I'm not saying that I think that is necessarily our best option, but Josh has grown a bit, he's experienced, he's a great shooter, and we just lost two good shooters at the wing positions.  On top of that, KD seems like he always tends to rely on his most experienced guys.
