I fail to see how Coach Embick's gamble saved starters' legs, considering most of the starters were pressed back into service during OT. I would say that he gambled and lost. The bench should have held on to the lead.

The bench should have held on to the lead. He didn't say saved "starters' legs". He made a large number of subs including one (Dener Dos Santos) who hasn't played at all this season. Also, which lead? When we gave up the first goal, all of this game's starters were in. When we gave up the 2nd goal, the only sub that we made from the lineup that scored our second goal was Nate Shultz for Goncalo Soares. Nate is usually a starter. I wouldn't say he was "bench". http://gozips.com/sports/msoc/2016-17/boxscores/20161102_sjss.xml?view=plays Edited November 3, 2016 by Zip_ME87
fknbuflobo
Embick was right to pull the starters in hopes of resting legs. It would have been really nice if the Bench (those who did not start) would have been able to either prevent GC second goal and/or score a third for us. They could do neither. 2nd half was never 100% starters or 100% bench. It very rarely is. I do not think Ruhaak or Weidt ever left the pitch. Embick was also right to re-insert starters in hopes of winning OT. Was there a net gain in overall minutes played for key players? Najem may have gained a few minutes rest, maybe. Did Belana play at all in OT? Holthusen definitely played more than anyone Akron would have liked. Embick managed the match well, but his team somewhat let him down. Nowadays, I will take any win anyhow.

TennZip
One indisputable fact that is a takeaway from the Grand Canyon game...Akron should never schedule another 4 pm game on a weekday. I know it was a result of a football game being moved to Wednesday for TV purposes. However, many season ticket holders could not come to a 4 pm game. Students did not have time for both the football game and the soccer game. The soccer student athletes were the ones that did not benefit as they did not have the normal crowd support that they have earned and that they did deserve. Moving the game to 4 pm on a weekday to accommodate football...was not a good decision for zips mens soccer
