O jogo bonito [The Beautiful Game]: Brazilian-born Victor Souto’s story of futebol — and soccer

...Souto decided to attend Akron because he wanted to go to a good school in the U.S. with strong academics and an excellent football program, both of which the University of Akron has. Souto met Jared Embick, the head coach of the Akron Zips men’s soccer program, when Souto attended a showcase in Florida in 2012. Embick offered Souto a full scholarship to Akron, a day Souto considers to be one of the “best days of my life".

However, moving from south of the equator wasn’t easy. There were times when he struggled. He didn’t know any English when he went to school, but he “liked the way the language sounded.”...

...Souto only looks at his time at Akron with positivity and gratefulness. ...

Whatever happened, I hope our coaching staff realizes how proud they should be of the difference they made in Victor's life and the path that they helped to set him on. Whatever the issue, he graduated Summa Cum Laude and has been working to do things right. Best wishes to him.

I wish they would schedule west coast matches at a decent hour for people in the east who work. It's a Sunday for cryin' out loud. Play the freakin game at 1 or 2 pm PDT (4 or 5 pm EDT).

Congratulations to Victor Souto.

He has played every minute this season for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and is leading the Riverhounds in tackles.

Controlling the middle

Columbus Crew loanee Ben Swanson and rookie Victor Souto played well in the midfield, starting their first game together against FC Cincinnati this past weekend. Both players recorded four tackles against Cincinnati, and Souto leads the Hounds with 11 tackles for the season. The more Swanson and Souto can control the ball in the middle of the field, the more opportunities will open up for forwards Corey Hertzog and Kevin Kerr on the frontline.

63 passes completed in one game for a former Zip !!!!

11. ROAD WEARY: If there’s anyone thinking “there’s no place like home” in the USL right now, it’s got to be FC Cincinnati. The club will prepare for its home opener on Saturday against Saint Louis FC coming off two losses in its opening three games, with Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Bethlehem Steel FC feeling like a case of almost everything that could go wrong doing so. From an early injury to new signing Justin Hoyte to Paul Nicholson’s red card that left the side down to 10 men, FCC couldn’t find any rhythm as Steel FC’s midfield led by Adam Najem – who completed a remarkable 91 percent of 69 passes – dictated the game. FCC has been hyping its opening week, which sees not only STLFC but fellow also undefeated sides Tampa Bay and Louisville visit Nippert Stadium. Head Coach Alan Koch has to be hoping his side’s fortunes will turn quickly with that gauntlet ahead.

Chad Barson knocking away that Louisville goal attempt in front of an otherwise empty net may be my favorite Zips sports memory of all time. Hope he catches on with someone.

Looks like Chad Barson is now playing in Sweden....

and yes, a very sweet memory from the national title game...

I'm happy to read that Chad found a place to play. best wishes to him in Sweden.

My favorite Zips memory of all time starts with Scotty Caldwell scoring the lone goal, moves to the kick save by David Meves, onto the shin save by Chad Barson, the clock hitting zero as the ball sailed out of bounds, hearing the "Akron Zips are National Champions" and concludes with our team triumphantly holding the trophy on the pitch. There is no one thing in that sequence that can be separated to stand alone. So glad I could be there. My best sports memory ever.

for zip soccer fans....much more technically astute than I am (and there are many !!!), the link also has a passing chart for AN's 69 passes)

TURNING THE SCREW: Adam Najem was rated as the top midfielder in the Premier Development League a year ago as he helped lead the Michigan Bucks to a second PDL Championship in three seasons, and on Sunday the Bethlehem Steel FC rookie showed why in his performance against FC Cincinnati. With his side up a man for much of the game after Paul Nicholson’s early sending off, Najem helped Steel FC dominate the midfield to key a 2-0 victory, Bethlehem’s first of the season.

Najem recorded a game-high 69 passes, a little more than 16 percent of Steel FC’s total of 422, and did so with precision, completing at a 91 percent accuracy rate. The 22-year-old also won three duels, losing only one, and won his one aerial duel.

Seku Conneh’s brace may have got the headlines on the day, but Najem’s performance set the tempo for Steel FC as it made its advantage against a good Cincinnati side pay off.

Michael Nanchoff seems to be having a super beginning of the year

His 3-0-0 Tampa Bay Rowdies team battles 2-0-1 Louisville on Saturday night at 7:30  (game available on you tube)
