Joao Looking Comfortable

The first SuperDraft pick in LAFC history, Joao Moutinho already looks comfortable at the next level.

Playing left back in the second half, Moutinho was assertive and confident on the ball. He expertly slotted in Ureña for the first LAFC goal. And his runs off Diego Rossi in the attacking third caused problems across Toronto’s backline.

Defensively, Moutinho didn’t put a wrong foot forward and did well to clamp down TFC’s right side during his 45 minutes on the pitch.

Three things we learned from the LA Galaxy's 3-1 preseason loss to Real Salt Lake

PERIOD ONE: PERRY KITCHEN SHOWS HIS QUALITY

In the LA Galaxy’s first 30 minutes of the 2018 season, midfielder Perry Kitchen was a real bright spot for Sigi Schmid’s squad.

In his brief showing, Kitchen provided the Galaxy with a two-way presence that they seemed to lack during their dissapointing 2017 campaign. Not only did Kitchen shield his defense from his holding midfield role, but he was responsible for starting several promising Galaxy counterattacks with his clever passing.

The 25-year-old may be a newcomer to the Galaxy, but on Saturday, Kitchen looked right at home in the team’s midfield

so glad to see Perry back in MLS.    He was so vital to the national championship in 2010.  Will be great to see him back on US TV.

4 Takeaways From LAFC's 1-1 Preseason Draw With NYCFC

... During the week, Bradley said he’d discussed with his staff the possibility of extending a few players up to 60 minutes in the second preseason match. Against NYCFC, four players went the full 90: Vela, Blessing, Joao Moutinho and Tyler Miller. ...

... High Praise For The Rookie

Following the match, NYCFC coach Patrick Vieira made a particular point of congratulating LAFC’s No. 1 overall pick Joao Moutinho for a great match.

The former Arsenal and Juventus man had just finished speaking with reporters when he a beeline for Moutinho, before putting his hand on the rookie’s shoulder and commending him for his play.

After the interaction, a stunned Moutinho could only say “it’s nice to be recognized” with a huge smile on his face.

Moutinho and LAFC now turn their attention to the third match of preseason against Vancouver Whitecaps on Feb. 18. ...

MOUTINHO LOOKS STEADY

Joao Moutinho, LAFC’s first overall draft pick, didn’t come off of the field Friday, playing the full 90 minutes.

He was slotted at an outside back position in the first half and moved to center back in the second half.

“I feel great,” he said. “I think I prefer left back, but whatever the coach wants me to play, that’s where I’ll play and I’ll give my best for the team.”

Moutinho, 20, has looked steady in both preseason games.

“My first two weeks as a pro and things have been going well,” he said. “We’re getting to know each other very well and starting to play more as a team, so it has been awesome.”

Adam being mentioned as a possible starter for his MLS team

Yep, we’re still talking about the No. 10

Last week’s ill-timed injury to Ilsinho — seriously, I think Nick Fishman put a curse on the poor guy — threw the door wide open for both Anthony Fontana and Adam Najem. With the odds of an outside hire walking into Clearwater decreasing by the minute, the two youngsters are in a pitched battle for the starting role.

Interestingly, the teenaged Fontana got the start on Saturday. But while he didn’t make any major errors, the Delaware native didn’t exert much influence on the match. Najem, on the other hand, looked lively in the final thirty minutes, producing an assist on the Union’s lone goal. Of course, he also managed to blast a sitter well over the bar, so it was a mixed bag for both players.

Najem probably has the slight edge heading into the final week, but with the two players set to split 180 minutes on the pitch this week it’s anyone’s guess who’ll be starting on March 3.
