Careful what we wish for

We better be careful what we wish for ... Cincinnati, Mike Thomas' new job, apparently will have a head coach opening after this morning. One thing I do NOT want is to start over with a new staff. Coaches are going to have up and down years, and I have confidence in Brookhart's intelligence and with his business background his willingness to make change where needed, at the end of the day.The timing of an "off" year at Akron may be just right. I'm sure Cincinnati will be at least looking at this year's top MAC coaches. Brookhart may be off limits this year at least. If you had told me five years ago that we'd have the MAC coach of the year, a MAC championship, and a bowl game last year, I'd have bet my first born child against it. Not to mention what the hiring of Dambrot has done for Akron. I'll take the off year in football - some of the best coaches in the country have this happen.

Probably will happen within 72 hours. Brookhart is gone. The UC (Thomas) - Brookhart connection seems very likely. If I'm a Bearcat fan (and I'm not), I would not be too happy with this selection. Brookhart is smart and will be successful but he has a lot to learn....the Big East is not the place to learn the postion of head coach, etc. Bearcats should look elsewhere in the MAC. How Frank Solich, having turned around Ohio (9-3 regular season, playing in MACC, going to first bowl since 1968, etc.), is not a candidate for the UC job...I'll never know. He should have been the guy three years ago. However, it could be that Mr. Solich is simply a man of his word and understands loyalty - somthing Mark Dantonio doesn't get.In any case, is coaching-change season fun!?!?!!?

IF this is going to happen (BIG IF at this point), I think Paul Winters is a good candidate. He was 6-5 at Wayne St. this year, winning the GLIAC coach of the year award. LO's offense was NOT the problem during his. Coaches like Paul and Tom Stacy ALWAYS seemed to have that side of the ball ready to play against just about everyone, including the "biggies" on the schedule. Plus, I believe that Paul would tend to be in it for the long haul. I think that knock on him the 1st time around (when Brookhart was hired) was that he had no HC experience. That can't be said now. :thumb:

I truely believe that is true. But. I also believe in:1984.jpgAnd479.jpgUC's going to lose a successful coach (by UC standards this was a successful season) and fill the void with a 5-7 coach form Akron? I'm sure that will happen. UC trustees will sign off on that one without hesitation.

I think we all know that the chances of that happening is slim to none. But IF it did I would like to see Akron go big-time with the coach similar to OU picking up Solich after being at Nebraska, i.e. Dirk Koetter, Gary Crowton (Oregon O-Coordinator), or Paul Petrino (Louisville O-Coordinator)Not happening but fun to look at.

A lot of people on the Ohio State boards think Cinci will take OSU's offensive coordinator (I forget his name). Another possibility, though far-flung, is that Cinci takes JD, and we get OSU's OC. I wouldn't mind it, especially since we play them next year. Whatever happens, it will probably happen within 72 hours, so keep your eyes and ears open.
