74Zip...there's been some discussion on here already concerning this issue. I think quite a few people are of the opinion that we'd suffer if the soccer stadium is approved first. I also think that a number of us would like to see Akron get the new stadium, and allow a soccer team to use it. In my opinion, this is a move by Wohlstein to satisfy his ego and have a great soccer facility here in our county, which I don't believe will get much use. However, he is attempting to sell it with the message of "job creation".If this soccer stadium happens, and we follow that by needing more public funding for an Akron football stadium, I have a sick feeling that we'll end up playing in the Rubber Bowl for quite a few more years.

Wait a minute ... has Mayor Don been able to put his ego aside enough to see/recognize the University sitting in his own backyard?! I don't know the details behind the bug up his ass regarding his relationship with the U of A but I haven't seen him at a U of A event in years. Correct me if I'm wrong but I just don't see him giving a rat's about a new U of A football stadium.

If wolstein (or howver you spell his name) comes out of nowhere and is able to rally local and county politicians, and people, to his cause, and it takes the wind out of UA campus stadium's sails, then it's the UofA's fault. How long have we been talking about getting a stadium on campus? Years! .... and we haven't rallied jack schit to our cause.

Wait a second guys. The mayor showed up at the Rubber Bowl a couple of years ago to give Charlie Frye's parents a Key To The City. When it involves free publicity, politicians ALWAYS show up.
DAMN! I think I missed that game ... OK, the mayor has only been spotted ONCE at a U of A event in recent years. I stand corrected!

;) mayor don at one point and may still be looking at running for a higher office...at one point it was congress...he may also be looking at the County Executive post as it is rumored mccarthy is leaving...he has a little baggage with his divorce etc. but IF he needs local support he may be more willing to 'get out in front' on a stadium here if he thinks it will get some pub his way...was there some problem between Uof A and mayor don surrounding canal park?...i don't remember...i know initially they were talking about Uof A being more involved with that somehow...

My guess is that any on-campus stadium concept will rely heavily on private investment. State support for tuition subsidies decreases every year. The idea that the State of Ohio (even with a new governor) would significantly fund a building that would be used 6 times a year for a school with virtually no football tradition is terribly unlikely. The University Park Alliance has received millions recently to continue the revitalization efforts around campus, but there's never any word about an on-campus stadium. The university's own Master Plan doesn't mention a stadium either. The palpable silence from the athletic department and the university itself likely means that the funding for the stadium is still hustling for private funds. And don't be surprised that the price tag for a 25-30k seat stadium will be closer to $60 million than the $40 million I've heard floated around. Stretch that out over a 30 year bond period and you're looking at about $5 million a year debt service. I'd be surprised if football gross revenues this year brought in any more than $1 million or thereabouts. This board had a discussion a few evenings ago regarding corporate naming rights for stadium. Get ready for a corporate name, along with some sort of multi-use concept for the stadium, shops, condos, restaurant's etc. If the private money is there then it doesn't matter what might be going on up in Macedonia with a soccer field.

Chill out everyoneWe are in the middle of a six month study. This is a massive project and will be the biggest out of any of Poenza's Landscape for Learning Project. With our condensed location, it is very difficult to find the right spot for a large project. We are not using state money so this soccer thing probably has nothing to do with what we are trying to do. We've been fundraising this for a long time so I would think we have some funds waiting.

mcprep you are right that it will cost around 60 million as that has been in the papers and quoted by mac in several interviews. i don't think they are being tight lipped either. this is a massive project that needs to be done right. not only for the football team, but for the university. i know it sucks but we as fans need to wait a little longer. i for one think a great stadium on campus is right around the corner. :screwks:

 hey gang...IF the ZIPS get a new stadium and even IF there is no state, local money used directly for it..there's going to be a whole bunch of streets, sewers, sidewalks etc..etc. that will be constructed, torn down, blocked off etc etc... that WILL need taxpayer money...they ain't gonna drop the damn thing out of the sky into the parking lots next to the field house...drink more beer...smoke more cigs...
