2025-2026 scholarship limits - Impact on Akron men's soccer????

Recommended Posts

NYCZIP has a good post under woman's soccer......about the 28 player roster limit ...starting next year.   I know that men's soccer will also be be impacted by the roster limits and the change in scholarship limits.

I did not know much about the subject.    I knew in the back of my mind that the current scholarship limit would increase substantially from the current 9.9 limit. I have attached a link from NCSA.

https://www.ncsasports.org/mens-soccer/scholarships#:~:text=D1 men's soccer programs will, and full scholarships to recruits.

The info below in bold  is a key part of the article.   There are charts and much more detailed info in the link above.

These changes would impact men’s soccer recruits and college Div. 1 men's soccer teams in the following ways:

D1 men’s soccer programs will be allowed to offer 28 scholarships, up from the current limit of 9.9.

D1 men’s soccer will have a maximum roster limit of 28.

D1soccer is already an equivalency sport and will continue to offer both partial and full scholarships to recruits.

Note: These are the maximum scholarship and roster limits set by the NCAA, but schools aren’t required to meet these maximums.

TennZip back writing again:

Living far away from Akron, I have no contact with any of the Akron soccer coaches or anyone in the Athletic director's department.

How many schools in Division 1 are now expected to fully fund 28 scholarships for men's soccer?    Schools like Michigan, Ohio State, and Clemson (with huge football revenue) could have a significant advantage in soccer.     Fortunately, none of the schools in the Big East are football powerhouses.

I know that HillTopper and others that post on the board are tight with Charles Guthrie.   It appears that YipaZip is very tight with the soccer coaches.

What is the anticipation for the changes that Akron and other Big East schools will make in terms of the number of scholarships that will be used in fall 2025?

The power four conferences are required to fund up to the roster limits for all sports due to the NCAA lawsuit agreement.

I can’t see a world where Akron can do that, remembering that Title IX still exists. 28 for men’s soccer means 28 for women’s soccer. This will greatly impact the ability to recruit against these schools. When every school was 9.9, you had a chance against big schools. Now it’s full ride in ACC, Big 10, Big 12 and SEC, which includes men’s soccer schools UCF (Big 12), Kentucky,(SEC) South Carolina (SEC) West Virginia (Big 12), and any other soccer school (Portland, James Madison, WMU, St Louis, etc) willing to invest.  I guess Akron could possibly go to 12 or 15 and then cobble together depth players. I would also guess that some of the Akron players that were recruited by big conference schools prior to this, can hit the portal looking  for a better financial deal.

This, coupled with MLS Next Pro deals for 15 and 16 year olds, will be quite a challenge.

Capt is correct- 28 soccer scholarships is insane- schools will drop the sport. But the same is true for baseball, softball, wrestling, lacrosse, field hockey et al. The same approximate number of scholarships to the number of "starters".

The answer to Capt.'s question is- there is never a 23rd scholarship kid. All recruits think they will start. Many of those who end up 23rd on a ten starter team depth chart will conclude that it is the coach's poor judgement that led to that "mistake". Just ask Joe Burrow during his time at OSU.

GP1 does an excellent job on this board re the state of college sports and I have no desire to butt into his space (might match his intelligence but never his passion). The crap is hitting the fan in college sports and taking away a great entertainment option for those who want to root for their team with some hope of winning!

You are absolutely right, and it has affected my desire to watch any NCAA sports right now, except for the Zips.  I used to be an NCAA basketball junkie, women and men, and loved a Saturday afternoon big game on TV.  Now, if I'm going to watch college kids play a sport and demand 12 million a year for an NIL deal, I'll stick with watching an NFL game with the real professionals.  Same goes now for the WNBA and WSL vs. college women's b-ball and soccer.
