Captain Kangaroo
Some of the "more seasoned" members of the board probably have some recollections of this guy? He was a little before my time:Click for Story
skip-zip
Yep...I'm not as old as Jack Lengyel, but I do know about his legacy. Actually, you still see him around here from time to time being honored for something or another. He's held in pretty high esteem here as a distinguished and successful alum.Has anyone else seen the movie? I loved it. Great story. I was still a teenager when that happened, but I do remember it.There is actually a part in that movie where Matthew McConaghy, who is playing Jack Lengyel, mentions AKRON. I almost jumped out of my seat in the theatre. There is even a clip at the end, where it talks about Marshalls future success in football, where it shows Byron Leftwich getting carried down the field during that game where he broke his leg at the Rubber Bowl. For those of you who don't know this part of the story, Jack Lengyel had a hand in us getting Mike Bobinski as our athletic director. Bobinski was an assistant AD to Lengyel at Army at the time, and Jack recommended him for the job at Akron. I didn't like Bobinski at all, but I just thought I'd share another part of Lengyel's connection to Akron.
Big Zip
Jack's a great guy and I've fortunately had the opportunity to meet him numerous times. He hosted an Akron reception for the Akron/Navy game a few years back at the Naval Academy. It was in the boat house -- pretty nice. I've also had the opportunity to meet him at an Alumni Awards banquet. Class guy -- really has fond memories of his alma mater and speaks highly of it. It sure would have been interesting to have him serve a few years as our AD after Thomas left. I thought McConahey (sp) portrayal of him in the movie was actually pretty terrible. He should never play dramatic roles -- he's just not suited for them.
Z.I.P.
I wasn't all that impressed by the film -- I guess I was wrong to think it would be more than a tearjerker. And does anybody really pronounce it Woooo-ster, I grew up not far away and always heard "Wuster". Comments? Red Steve? Anyhow, I have met Lengyel (and BTW -- I've always heard the "Y" pronounced in his name when he was introduced, unlike the film), a couple times, last when the USNA played in the Aloha Bowl. He was a proud Akron alum. And if I'm not mistaken, he headed search committees more than once at UA. Was he head of the committee that picked Thomas, or was it just Bobinsky? And maybe the one that hired Hipsher?Just so you know
UA Fan
I wasn't all that impressed by the film -- I guess I was wrong to think it would be more than a tearjerker. And does anybody really pronounce it Woooo-ster, I grew up not far away and always heard "Wuster". Comments? Red Steve? It's pronounced Wuss-ter (pardon the phonetics - not that they're wusses), they got it wrong in the film. It would be understandable for the Marshall pres. and other outsiders to rhyme it with rooster but Lengyel himself being a coach there wouldn't have mispronounced it. The Akron mention was in reference to a train that was seen going thru Huntington, having gotten "back on track" (as Marshall would) after a derailment "near Akron." K92
Wow. 4 year response time. I hope everybody wasn't saying Wooooooooooster for the last 4 years. My wife's family is from Sandusky and that's how they say it, like it rhymes with Brewster.

Yeah, I'm not much of a movie watcher so I finally just got around to borrowing it from the library and watching it. Then of course I had to search for the zombie thread on here Boy, their program was a mess even before the crash...now I don't feel so bad about us. As a side note to the Marshall story, a longtime ABJ news staffer and 1960s-era Thundering Herd football player told me that one of the reasons Akron was ignored for MAC membership for so many years was a well-intentioned offer by Akron AD Gordon Larson to have the Zips fill in for Marshall against Ohio the week after the tragedy. Larson said something like, "Ohio now has an open date and we are willing to travel to Athens to show them that we have a quality program." Many in the MAC saw that as untoward. Rather than play a game, Ohio had sort of a cool ceremony in which the team came out on the field in suits and ties, lined up for a ceremonial kickoff and then picked up the football and knelt in prayer. Several thousand attended the "game." One of the Marshall players killed in the crash was a Cuyahoga Falls resident. For some reason, the high school never honored him with a plaque or other memorial. Another Falls player was dropped from the travel roster at the last minute and is an executive at Goodyear.
