Zip_ME87
I saw another post on the board in one of the threads today about an article referring to the University of Akron as AU, so I thought I would bring this up (for those who are borthered by "AU" or "Akron U")...Our fight song refers to us as "Akron U""...Akron U, Gold and Blue, All for you, and the Zip(per)s too!"Given this, it seems unjustified to complain about being referred to as AU, Akron U, or Akron University. Although, I prefer UA myself and try to avoid AU.Akron Blue and Gold:We cheer the Akron Blue and Gold.We cheer as the colors unfold. We pledge anew, we're all for you,As the team goes crashing throughFight! Fight! We cheer The Akron Warriors bold,For a fight that's a sight to behold. So we stand up, and cheer and shout, for the Akron Blue and Gold.Ziiip! Zip go the Zippers!Ziiip! Zip go the Zippers!Akron U, Gold and Blue,All for you, and the Zippers too!
Bleacher Bum
The fight song is now "Akron True."
zip81
Zip_ME87 speaks the truth. From the spring commencement program:The University of Akron fight song, "The Akron Blue and Gold," was written in 1939 by Fred Waring, nationally known composer and leader of the wildly popular band, Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians."In response to a request from the Univeristy's student newspaper, Waring wrote, "a distinctive song" for The University of Akron. The Akron Blue and Gold premiered over his NBC hookup on November 17, 1939, and has been used as the University's fight song ever since.Personally, I try to avoid Akron U or AU...but sometimes with friends I think Akron U is an OK slang. However, for anything formal, it has to be UA or The University of Akron.Too much to do about nothing? Perhaps.
zip81
The fight song is now "Akron True." I don't know Bum...The words 87 quotes are the same ones in the spring commencement program. If they changed it, you would have thought they wouldn't put it in the program that way. Bleacher Bum
There is a plaque in the marketing department's office with "Akron True" as the words written on it. I believe they changed it, but no one ever cared to change it on everything. I thought about starting a petition to have it officially changed, but then I saw the plaque. I'm thinking about the petition idea again...
akronad
Yeah, sure!!If it is in the marketing department it's true. Our marketing dept. sucks. Between them and the ticket office, they need to clean house.

Zip_ME87
The fight song is now "Akron True." Thanks BleacherBum..."...Akron True, Gold and Blue..." is the way I learned the song. But, I always hear the band sing it "...Akron U, Gold and Blue..." and thought I was completely wrong. I didn't realize that both are correct. AK-Zips
"True" was changed from "U" about 6 or 7 years ago now. The school was never ever called Akron University. It's slang. It's just annoying when people outside of the University circle call it Akron University as mentioned in the other basketball thread and on the back of Hixson's letterman's coat. The School is The University of Akron. Akron U became a very popular term with the Wrecking Crew of Akron U in '62. Pease tell me if i am wrong but i think this is pretty accurate. After that time all of the folks around that era referred to it as Akron U as the "official" slang name of the school.Yes, the fight song although written long ago using the phrase "Akron U" has been changed since to "Akron True". In the commencement programs it talks about the original rendition of the song. It never mentions any updates or changes. Did you know that the original fight song was written in a different key than what is played today? That’s never mentioned either. CLASS DISMISSED! zip81
If they changed the words they should put the accurate version in the programs.

bobbyake
How can you really care if someone refers to the University of Akron as AU when it's getting free publicity? As long as Akron's getting national attention, I could care less. If you really cared, go to Wikipedia and search Zip or Zips, nothing on there mentions the University of Akron.
