UAZipster0305
We just added Woman's Golf as a varsity sport for the 2088-2009 season!http://www.gozips.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_...0&ATCLID=921213It's nice to see us adding sports and growing unlike OU that is cutting many athletic programs. If we add a men's sport in the future, I'd like to see it be tennis as it provides parity with the woman's program and should be one of the least expensive programs to run.Go Zips Woman's Golf!Let the debate begin...which woman's athletic program will have the most physically attractive team members?...Golf or Tennis? zipboy
I saw an article in SI recently that girl's flag football was becoming the new sport of choice in FL. It has already been sanctioned and I thought about 4000 girls across the state were playing. I wonder if this becomes a sport in college over the next 10-15 years. It would have to be pretty cheap to have. Except for the scholarships, there would not be much more in costs.
Zipmeister
Regarding reinstituting mens tennis (or wrestling, or swimming) or starting any new mens varsity sport, don't hold your breath. As long as UA has a football team and Title 9 is in force, the two most likely changes to occur will be the addition of additional womens sports or the elimination of mens teams. The NCAA sanctioned sport most likely to have a chance to break even financially is mens hockey, but that ain't gonna happen. My vote would be to add either womens mud wrestling or a NASCAR racing team (could cover both genders with this one).
Captain Kangaroo
Interesting that OU is cutting programs while UA is adding them. Such a move adds a teenie weenie bit of fuel to the "Akron is setting themselves up to move to a bigger conference" rumor.
UA Fan
This should put us close to Title IX parity...if you add up the women-only sports (volleyball-tennis-swimming-golf) it comes close to a football team. I would hate to see any other sports get axed.Womens golf should help us get more points toward the MAC female all-sports standings where we're still finishing near the bottom. Let's hope they can bring in a good coach and some good recruits for a fast start to the program.
zippyrifle32
good to hear that they finally announced this. the golf guys had been talking about it but something about it not supposed to be leaked until this summer. by adding women's golf we can add scholarship money to other men's sports that are not up to their maximum (track, soccer just to name a couple). i see that happening before adding another men's sport. akronad
I hate to burst anyone's bubble, BUT we will not be adding anymore men's sports programs. Title IX means that we must make very attempt to have the same number of women participants as we do men particpants. Women's golf just brings us closer to equality. Captain Kangaroo
With regards to Title IX, does the K.e.n.t. football team count towards the schools men's or women's scholarships?
Zipmeister
If the ncaa lets Can't count their fball team as female they will have to come up with a new gender for us cause they kicked our ass.
Captain Kangaroo
Twice a decade....I'll take an 80% win percentage over our rival any day.
Big Zip
I often don't understand how football is even counted in the Title IX conversations. I know women don't typically play it, but they have every opportunity to if they could hold their own. Jacksonville State (I think) had a female kicker a few years back. I heard Nick Mangold talking on the radio a few weeks back and he was talking about his sister who plays o-line for his high school. She's like 5'9 310 -- that's one big girl. zippyrifle32
title ix has to do with equal scholarship money. so big zip, if akron signed half the football team to women then they would have more men's money somewhere else. however, there are no women playing (because as you stated they can't hold their own) so there is the imbalance. we see this in rifle because we are a coed sport, but the girls get 90% of the scholarship money because of title ix. zippyrifle32
exactly personally, i would really like to see the addition of golf allow for a more equal split of the money for our team. it really hinders recruiting when you can't offer guys money. bobbyake
This is great news. I hope that the ladies will be as good as the men. I had the chance to golf with Brad Wright during Akron's Accounting Golf Outing and he's amazing. Because of him, my team won.
timmyboy
I heard Nick Mangold talking on the radio a few weeks back and he was talking about his sister who plays o-line for his high school. She's like 5'9 310 -- that's one big girl. Yeah, and to be honest. the highlight film that I saw of her she didnt do that bad. she mainly played special teams (PAT, FG) but i did see her come in alot during the 3rd down plays. She played for a HS that was pretty decent..... made it to the state tourney so for her to get any PT is both a suprise to me and shows that she can play with the boys.
