Found this while researching why JD thinks this defense is a good idea. If it's to hard to recruit big athletic D-linemen, then the 3-3-5 is the exact opposite of the defense we want to be playing.I personally like the 4-2-5, if we want 5 DBs out on the field.http://www.ncaabbs.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=257258
:laugh_up: Yes I can see how attendance is very relevant to what you are talking about with the 3-3-5 defense. If you want to educate yourself on the 3-3-5 then I suggest you read this:Coaching Footballs's 3-3-5 DefenseBut also for you I would suggest:Just for you.

New Mexico has been running the 3-3-5 for about 10 years now and it had greatly benefited the lobos. For this scheme to run effectively you have to have quick D-linemen and fast linebakers. I don't think there is a D in the nation that runs it as complex as the lobos, our LB and DB usually blitz around 80% of the time and is real fun to watch!
I think we blitz 8% of the time. I like a defense that puts pressure on the QB. I don't give a sh*t what you call it.

The 3-3-5 is like any other defense in football. If you have the talent to play it you can be very good at it. If you don't have the talent, it will look like crap. The 3-3-5 depends on the d-line neutralizing the o-line so the linebackers can make more plays. Just like the 3-4Unfortunately we don't have an overly strong, not to mention deep, d-line. Therefore, our linebackers can't do their job. Also the linebackers we do have aren't very fast. Next year having Bain and Sewell back along with Pendleton and some of these freshman a little more experienced, the defense should look better. Of course, all but 1 guy in the secondary will be gone so that will hurt. The problem Akron has with the 3-3-5 is the same problem the Browns have with the 3-4. That is the d-line.The Browns don't have any quality d-lineman. Their NT is 145 years old and the rest of the guys were low picks or undrafted.IF Akron can get some quality d-lineman along with some quicker lb's, the 3-3-5 will work.

Just like the Run & Shoot offense was a fad, the 3-3-5 defense was a fad that has run out of time. Everyone has figured out how to play against it. We just still happen to use it. Just about everyone who used it has given up on it.Simply put, the group of players you put onto the field on first and second downs are too small to compete against the larger players on those downs (one tight end and a fullback OR two tight ends). This forces coaches to guess as to what is going to happen. I don't like guessing. Reason beats guessing and that is why we get killed in the second half of games. Teams figure it out and kill it. Look at the past two games. As the season goes on, more teams will have film showing how to beat this junk and it will get worse. We have to be able to score more points to win.Akron needs to reduce their defense by one small player and add a medium size player with a LB. While they can't do it this year because they committed to this defense through last spring and fall camp, they need to do something different this off season. The change really doesn't seem all that complicated to me. With enough practice, the players should catch on.Quickness is not the answer. Ohio State did not lose the BCS Championship because they were too slow...they lost it because Florida lined up in a spread offense, smashed them in the mouth one-on-one and they were not physical enough to compete. Putting a smaller/quicker guy in the game for OSU would not have helped...it would have only made it worse. Having a quicker defense that is still too small for Akron is not going to help next season either. Akron needs to be more physical, not quicker. Larger players stand a better chance of making a team more physical than smaller players.

 GP1...not that it means anything coming from me but thats great...Akron is too small in the BOX...Mackey was agreat kid but he was either too small or too slow...match up chaos..the D line can't control the line of scrimmage so O linemen are all over the backers and safeties... put 4 down d linemen... at least they can occupy more o lineman...

i totaly disagree.our lbs and db cannot tackle in open space.how many times did the temple qb drop back, and look for an open running lane.once he got passed the line of scrimage he made our guys look like they were standing still.you would think having more db and lb would help but it does not.at the same time our offense could not stay on the feild long enoug to give our d a rest.chasing a fast qb will wear a defense out soon.i am not sure how much of a the defense being won out was a factor also.
