Mickey Matthews page on JMU web siteIt's going to be interesting to see if this is anything more than rumor at this point. :blink:A couple of posts on Rasor's blog ...# OnTheBeat Says:November 23rd, 2007 at 9:42 pmJD Brookhart will be released from his contract within the next 48 hours. I heard this from a great source and also from several of the players who were not too happy about it. Seems as if JD was told via phone after the game and that the assistants have been calling players this afternoon and telling them there is a team meeting set for 10 am on Saturday morning at the Field House.Mack has already identified his new coach, former UTEP assistant and current James Madison Head Coach Mickey Matthews.Under Matthews’s leadership, James Madison achieved a Division 1AA national football championship in 2004. His overall record as a head coach at JMU is 60-41.[1]Matthews started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Lamar High School, in Texas, working with offensive backs. During the 1978 season, he joined Kansas State University, as an assistant coach. During the 1980-1981 seasons, he served as a defensive coordinator of Southwest Texas State. From 1982-1985, he became an assistant coach at UTEP. In the following 1986 season, he worked at the University of Houston as a defensive backs coach. In the 1987 season, he held that same position, only at Texas Christian University. During the 1988 and 1989 seasons, he coached at Southwest Texas State. From 1990-1995, he served as the assistant head coach at Marshall University. From 1996-1998, he became an assistant coach at the University of Georgia. Finally, since 1999, he has been the head coach at James Madison University.# mrasor Says:November 23rd, 2007 at 10:38 pmInteresting. I’m doing some work to validate/discredit that.

That's the best we could do with the nations top (pending) facilities? Nothing against coach Matthews, but if this rumor is true then we should be able to get someone with a better overall record.

This is waaaayyy too fast. If this were the case, that would mean that they already had planned on firing JD weeks ago and already have had contact with this other coach. I find that hard to believe.I would think there would be some type of search to find the best available talent. Not just pick 1 guy and go with him. However, if this is true, it could end up being good. This is much better for recruiting to get a guy in here right away instead of having to wait until January. Hopefully, if true, this guy is the right guy.

I would offer the job to this guy! He is the most successfull coach in NCAA history and is right in our back yard. He has a great gig where he is and may not take the job, but why not offer it to him? What was Mount Union football before he arrived there? Nothing. I doubt that MU could match our compensation package. OSU hired a proven winner from a lower division and it paid off (I knew it would). Akron needs to at least attempt, to do the same thing. This guy has the ability to make Akron a dominate force in the MAC.http://www.muc.edu/athletics/men_s_teams/f...larry_kehres__1

If this is true, the only reason that we get this guy so fast is because he was a coach at UTEP under Mack when he was the AD. Not sure that jumping on a coach that fast is the answer. Akron was in pretty much every game this year, they were just a play or two ( or three) away from winning it. I think that if we got rid of the BS offensive play calling things would have been alot different. The offense we used is one for a team with a running and passing QB, like Central Michigan.... Jaq is not a running QB. Our offense was made to have CJ7 in there, the guy they originally thought would be the starter............ but for some odd reason, JD and his staff held a grudge against him this year. They say that they wanted to play the QB who would not commit the mistakes, but look at the stats......... Jaq committed the mistakes and still was aloud to run this team more and more into the ground. After midway thru the year if he wasent producing and moving the Ball, i would think it was time to take a look at other options.

;) IF this is true Matthews has a great pedigree if nothing else...defense oriented..lengthy assistant AND head coaching experience...coached under Jim Donnan(Marshall...Georgia)...has consistently been .500 or better at JMU... AND the best part...he's from TEXAS...now would a guy like this want to come here just because its D-1,state of the art practice facility and soon to be brand new stadium?...unless he thinks Akron is a graveyard, why not?

I have no inside knowledge, but don't you have to go through a process and make sure minority candidates get looked at? This just does not make sense.
Not when you're dealing with Mack Rhoades. He has been bringing in all his cronies from UTEP ever since he arrived, without actually looking for talent to hire in, and this would be no different. If this rumor proves to be true, it wouldn't suprise me one bit.Matthews is a pretty good coach, though. I wouldn't mind him being on the sidelines for us, but I do think that with our new facilities and our proximity to a very good HS talentpool that if a search was held Akron could probably do better. The only thing holding us back is the weak coaching salary that a MAC coach makes compared to even coordinators for BCS schools.

 how's this...footballscoop.com has Fleming going to Rhode Island as HC...looks like somebody will be moving...
Fleming has a pretty checkered past as a head coach, and with the way our D has performed this year, I doubt he gets a look anywhere but at the hs level if he isn't at Akron.
